BCS Strips USC of 2004 National Title

I didn't know BCS had that kind of power. I'm going to have to be more careful with my omelette pans in the future....

But they keep the writer's award (AP) so they can still claim to be MNC's

I think demanding a refund of the $17,000,000 payout would be a much more harsh penalty. And probably get the attention of the cheaters a bit more.

As it is, they really didn't do anything.

The problem with that is it is distributed to the conference, not the school. They even say in the article that we would have had somebody in the BCS so the payout really doesn't matter.

so whos the champion?

Colorado. duh.

This discussion brings up a good point, though. What is an appropriate punishment that would actually deter this kind of cheating? Do they need to swing the death penalty stick again?

Yes.

Well, OU woudn't be the champion because they have another loss on their schedule, it would have to go to someone else. I vote Alabama, because according to them they in some way have won the championship every other year since 1900.

I think the time has come for monetary fines. The NCAA's current method of penalizing teams isn't working. Hit them in the pocketbook. I don't have a problem with penalizing the conference -- make each conference another layer of accountability.

While I don't necessarily disagree, I think that going after the conferences for monetary damages will only push them closer to leaving the NCAA altogether.

yeah, right ncaa. we all know who won that game. this is meaningless.

This. This idea of stripping of titles that were won years ago is one of the more ridiculous things I've ever heard of. They won the thing then and there, you can't go back in time.

i have no problem of the swinging the ban stick by the NCAA. makes for good watching on espn decades later.

Yeah. Cal -- whose only loss that year was to USC. (And then b/c of that loss and Mack Brown's pandering, got screwed out of the Rose Bowl at 10-1 due to a rule that's since been amended). Not that I'm bitter or anything.

Pat Haden's already said as much. They still have the AP title, which won't be vacated by the AP, even though USC has no wins that year.

Wait a minute - the BCS vacated the victory, not the NCAA. The AP doesn't have to follow BCS penalties.

The NCAA already vacated the majority of the games that Bush played in from the moment they can prove his mother and step-dad moved into that house in San Diego.

You're right, I'd never read the infractions. From NCAA.com:
"The penalties include four years probation; a two-year football postseason ban; a one-year basketball postseason ban; vacation of regular and postseason wins for all three involved sports (football, basketball and women’s tennis); scholarship reductions for football and basketball; and recruiting restrictions for men's basketball."

More importantly, USC never showed at the 2005 title game in the eyes of the BCS. Therefore that awesome Texas/VY victory is negated. The greatest moment in Texas Football history (and they generally believe that) never happened. Suck it Longhorns!!
