OL recruiting issues..

Another in state OL has ruled us out, with Arthur Flores committing to San Diego St tomorrow if Penn St passes. Why so tough this year? Just a new staff with nothing to back up their claims? Its supposed to be the best OL class out west in years.

I think Marshall being a drifter per say is being used against us which I'd hurting. Hopefully when the OL recruits see the smash mouth football of old this fall it'll help a fair amount. And the staff never really seemed interested in Flores from yhe start.

Plenty of OL talent still out there. No need to get panicky just yet, but certainly time to get the ball rolling and hopefully get a few commits in this department sooner rather than later. Not sure why San Diego State would have appeal at this point, playing in front of 20k in 70k capacity Qualcomm must blow -- Buffs must have gone cold on this guy, but who knows what runs through the mind of a 17-18 y/o kid

Ya, maybe. No clue about particulars of Flores's recruitment with Colorado. I'm just pissed that San Diego St could beat us out on 2 OL, one of them being from Colorado. Seems odd that we would go cold on him, after offering him and only having 1 commit at OL.

I don't know that SDSU beat us out of 1 (never mind 2) OL guys. There's a lot of offers out there. Embree told our group this spring that he was looking to sign 5 OL guys. But I don't think anyone was counting on Asiata getting in at that point nor were they even thinking about signing Brad Cotner, who they are high on.

Not sure they want 5 anymore. It's very very early and we are in on a lot of guys.

I thought we dispelled the myth that Marshall is a drifter. Assistant coaches are vagabonds. They leave for better job, and they get fired. Look at Jeff Grimes moves from Boise State to ASU to BYU to CU to Auburn. Length of stay equal to Marshall. Grimes followed his HC to ASU, promptly got fired at ASU, took BYU to feed his family, jumped to CU to get out of Provo, jumped to Auburn to get paid well... Marshall's moves are all similar. He followed a few head coaches around. He got fired with the rest of the staff a few times (Houston Texans, Cleveland Browns).

This is the life of a college football coach.

Marshall has a track record for developing NFL talent. He will be fine. We got 4 guys in state who are 4-stars and getting options to go anywhere and everywhere. We've lost a lot of guys like that the last several years.

There is some good talent that I hope we can pull in-state on the OL trail. However, I don't know the Flores was on that list. There are still a lot of kids out there that can help us of equal caliber, we just gotta pull them out of TX or CA.

If i'm CU, i'm focusing my attention on flipping Callahan, Thurston and Gavin Andrews. I personally want Walker Williams, and Matt Cochran as well. There are a few other kids from Texas and CA but we're still in prime position here. The staff flipped and closed recruits strong last year and I imagine they are going to do that again this year, especially if we have some success on the field and in the standings.

"Losing" Flores and Maass is way down the list of worries in recruiting this year.

Not even worried about the process. Because i have looked at the depth for the next 2 years and we are fine in that area.
If we can get

OG- Alex Kozan, OG- Jordan Roos, OT- Walker Williams, OT- Nico Siragusa, OT- Gerald Kough we will be fine for the 2012 recruiting class
2012 Depth

LT- Bakhiari(JR), Lewis(SO), Williams(FR)

LG- Asiata(RFR), Crabb(SO), Kozan(FR)

C- Munyer(SO), Cotner(SO), Kelly(RFR)
RG- Daniewitz(SR), Roos(FR), Handler(SO)

RG- Harris(JR), Mustoe(RFR), Siragusa(FR), Kough(FR)

The OL will be fine.

I honestly think you just look at numbers and as long as there is someone to plug into a spot for the depth chart, that automatically equals depth. It does not work that way.

Not to mention that you continue to throw out random names for this year's class, many of whom will not be coming to Boulder. For the longest time, you were talking up Arthur Flores and went so far as to say he had arguably the highest ceiling of any in-state prospect this year. Now losing him does not matter?

Alex Kozan picking the Buffs would shock me. As for the other players you listed, some of them are good, but the five you listed overall is just an okay group overall, especially with all the OL talent this year. If that is how we are looking on signing day, I am going to be disappointed.

I want Walker, just cause his parents seem to have their heads screwed on straight. (Blatant ass kissing to DoWork, but I like the way the whole family is approaching this.)

You are wrong, i really like Roos, Williams, Kozan, and we do have good depth with Munyer, Asiata, Harris, Bakhairi on the line. I saw the spring game live inperson, CU is not lacking depth in OL not now not next year. Not the end of the world if we lose a couple of players, because at the end of day it takes 11 players on offense, 11 players on defense, and your special team group to win, not individual so called big name in state recruits. ' As long as we get 5 really good OL on signing day that is all that matters, really don't care if they in state or out of state.

We're still in it for Thurston and Callahan. They are both high on us, but most of what they've seen around the program has been negative for the past 6 years. They reserved spots with good programs and we have a real shot at flipping both of them if the coaches back up what they're saying with on-field performance. They both like the new staff and what they're hearing.

Offer or no, the staff hasn't gone out of its way to recruit the rest of the in-state OLs. We had room to take as many as 6 this cycle, so they were probably willing to show their in-state commitment by taking Kozan, O'Connor or Flores early if any had responded strongly that they definitely wanted to be a part of things at CU. But they haven't gone out of their way to recruit any of them when they didn't get the early commitment. There is a long list of out of state prospects that the staff simply like better.

I am frustrated with our OL recruiting at this point, but my frustration is focused on Callahan and Thurston. Also, I think we need to see at least one high-level commitment on the OL before the season starts.

As a recruiter, Marshall is a very honest and straight shooting guy who has a personal touch. But he's more of a slow play type guy who builds relationships (much like Cabral). He's not a salesman who is going to pressure early commitments. Not his style. We'll see some of our OL class close late and it will likely include flipping a couple guys as they realize that he's a straight shooter in the land of recruiting b.s.

P.S. Marshall also prefers huge OLs who are 6'5" or taller. He wants an OL that will be able to overwhelm a defense with its size as the game goes along. Expect most of our targets to be massive human beings.

Add O'Connor to that list for me. No reason for us to strike out on the top three OL in the state. It's unacceptable to me. I can see losing one, but not all three. O'Connor was always supposedly not very high on CU to begin with. I really don't care if he was or not. The kid is a talented offensive lineman and CU is the premier football program in the state.

I sincerely hope you're right about us still being in the picture for Callahan and Thurston. Flip one of them, get Williams, and possibly Cope-Fitzpatrick, and I'll be extremely pleased. The problem with that scenario is that we'd have to convince two guys to come here who are already comitted elsewhere.

This staff flipped 7 guys from other programs in 6 weeks of recruiting for the 2011 class. About 3 of those 6 weeks were dead period when they couldn't call, visit or host. Have faith.

Hmmm....

Pulled directly from the Flores recruiting thread: http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread.php/58002-12-CO-OT-Arthur-Flores

Plays alot like like Orlando Franklin, the 2nd round pick of the Denver Broncos. He is a project, just needs to improve his technique, has the power to dominate both in the running game or passing game, even though he is not getting a lot of recognition in the recruiting cycles. This guy might have the highest ceiling among the OL that we recruiting in state.

Or this thread where you like him as the LT for this class: http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread.php/58192-12-CA-OG-Jordan-Simmons/page2?highlight=flores

That wish list has change

Simmons, Cochran, Flores, Calahan, Tuerk,

C/OG- Cochran
ROT/ROG- Tuerk
ROT- Calahan
LOT- Flores
LOG- Simmons

Another thread: http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread.php/62517-How-big-a-blow-is-this-week/page3?highlight=flores

Folks it is still too early. There are still a ton of good players both in HS and in the JUco ranks. Getting Colorado Kids is important but getting the best players and developing players is the most important aspect of recruitinng regardless of what state they come from.

0L- Joey O Oconnor, Arthur Flores, Alex Kozan, Walker Wiliams, Jordan Simmons, Lacey Wetbrook, Travis Averill, Jordan Roos, Austin Maass, Stephon Mccray, Cochran

From another thread: http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread....-have-3-commits-so-far/page2?highlight=flores

Not worried, still early. We can still get alot of players that i rate highly.

Flores, Calahan, Thurston, ifedi, Cochran, Dillon, Javon Williams, Conor Crane, Powe,Hamilton, Yuri Wright, Shumate, are still open to schools. I believe it is time to deploy Cabral and EB.

Depending on who does the rankings
Right now i would rank the instate talent as follow

1. Cyler Miles
2. Thurston
3. Flores
4. Calahan
5. Baylis
6. Kozan
7. O conner
8. Hennington
9. Nogard

Flores is big and also athletic. The guy blocks down field and pulls from the LT position. He has the higher ceiling, because he is still growing, Flores is going to be a beast.

Another thread: http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread....ng-Scale-for-prospects/page2?highlight=flores

Flores-4
Calahan-4
Cochran-5
Dillion 5
Miles-3
Thurston-4

Yet another thread: http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread.php/60849-What-is-your-recruiting-wish-list?highlight=flores

Offense

QB-Bart Houston or Shane Dillion
RB- Catalon, Payne
WR- Powe, Crane, Javon Williams, Deante Gray
OL- Cochran, Lacy Westbrook, Kozan, Calahan, Flores, Ifedi
TE- Macnamara(sp), Baylis

How could anyone possibly make a giant leap in logic that you really like Flores as a prospect? But that's okay, because apparently in the last month or two, you found other OL you like a lot more.

I also find it odd that you are suddenly playing up the depth on the current roster, but back in March you were talking about taking as many as 10 OL in this class. Did the spring game sway you that much?

From this thread: http://www.allbuffs.com/showthread.php/58527-12-CA-OG-Stephon-McCray

We need about 7-10 OL depending on attrition. 7 minimum, 10 max, plenty of scholarships to go around.

Behrens, Tao, Iltis, Ryan Miller, Adkins, Daniels and Givens could be kicked off the team hopefully he is pardoned. That makes it 7 Ol lost this coming cycle.

In 2012 7 OL will reamain with 3 incoming freshman that will make it 10 OL on scholarship. A good number to have is about 17-20 OL on scholarship, you have to account for attrition and etc.

So if Flores is not a guy you liked, despite plenty of posts that directly contradict that assertion, but we need a lot of OL in this class, can you try to explain it to me again how we should not be at least a little disappointed in OL recruiting thus far?

BB

What exactly is your point

I never denied i like Flores, still like him, and we can still get him even if he is not considering us right now. Teenagers do change there minds.

Probably too soon to know, but I wonder what the chances of getting Givens back in 2012 are. That would help a lot.

 ...don't get in a verbal spat with BB huh?

I would have to agree though that bigbang's depth is a little screwy...that depth chart is not very comforting at all. We need more depth, and quality players. The five O-Linemen you want to bring in are not that amazing either as a unit...in a year where we need to sign some quality O-Linemen, we were blessed with a great O-Linemen class, yet we've failed to capitalize on it.

I'm not as worried as some though, because one, it's still just July and two, I honestly believe we're going to flip either Callahan or Thurston (if not both). This thought is completely unfounded, but as the season goes on, I just don't see Thurston sticking with Nebraska...and if he comes, Callahan follows suit.

My point is you continuously post the "we're fine because there are lots of players left" mantra every time a prospect goes elsewhere. Your "wish list" for OL has changed weekly and you talk up Flores as an elite OT prospect while rating him the #3 overall prospect in the state, but suddenly you change your stance to "teenagers do change their minds"?

I have little doubt that if the three guys you apparently "really like" at the present moment (Williams, Roos, Kozan) commit elsewhere, you will just find other random names on the offer list to latch onto for a couple weeks.

Recruiting is so much more than a numbers game, as is quality depth.

Teenagers do change there minds. It is not over untill signing day. And what exactly do you want me to do, you want me moan that we lost players or do you want the coaches to moan and stop recruiting other players. There are a ton of good players, recruiting is an ever changing roller coaster, it is far from over.

The good news is that this staff did flip a lot of guys late last year and as stated above Marshall seems like the kind of recruiter who builds momentum over time. We also did not have the level of attrition in the O-line that some expected with only Iltis as a major loss so far. I say so far because with his past history I wouldn't bet my paycheck on Givens ever contributing to the team, hope I am wrong but have to be realistic. We also weren't counting on Asiata qualifying and Cotner is an intriguing addition at center along with Kelley. I am also glad to have Kough on board for next year.

All that said, we do have bad news at this point. LOI day is a long way away so I'm not going to panic but we have one kid who has actually said he is coming to CU at the O-line position. Our key in state prospects may flip to us but so far have said they are going elsewhere and our out of state prospects aren't shouting our name our loud.

With the low turnover and addition of Asiata, Kelley, and Cotner I don't think we need 6 or 7 O-line recruits this year or even to push it to 5 just to get numbers. What we do need though is at least 3 high quality guys who are legit candidates to be quality starting BCS linemen. If we can turn Thurston or Callahan (more likely) then we have one. cybert or someone else we aren't thinking of right now may be the second. I didn't count Kough because he is still a developmental project but would be a great 3a if he turns out.

The key for me to this being a successful year in addition to the above is Williams. He is not rated as highly as I think he should be because he is still raw. That said he is physically huge and still growing. He is a quality athlete who can move his size, he is intelligent and a good student who will handle the academic end and learn quickly on the field, and most importantly he seems to have the background to become not just an excellent player but a solid team leader who brings a lot more to the team than what he does when the ball is snapped. If he goes elsewhere the staff will have to do something spectacular to overcome my dissapointment. I see him as a keystone player, a future Nate Solder who sets a tone from the tackle position.

We shouldn't be in panic mode right now or even worry stage but to be concerned is certainly justified. If we don't have some things settled on the OL recruiting by January then it will be time to panic. Everyone loves the guys who get their names called in the play by play but those guys don't do their thing without the O-line making it happen. Slick Rick has as talented a bunch of skill position guys as just about any team in the country but he is likely to lose his job this year because of his failure to find and develop O-linemen.

Some consistency in your posts would be a welcome change. But I will keep the expectations on that front quite low.

Maybe next you can try to explain to me again how TE is not a big need or priority in this class like you did after Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick committed to USC.

And how have i not been consistent. I still believe Flores is a very good player, and i want him. I still believe TE position is not a big deal, even though i believe we can still flip Baylis, worst case scenario get a transfer in or a JUCO.
