practice report 8/9 with a defensive slant

New to the site but enjoy reading the board and staying up on the team.

I tend to watch the defense more than the offense so thought a defensive practice summary might be nice for those of you stuck in the office or living away from Boulder. Observations from this mornings practice:

1) The D Line is very good. From top to bottom this is one of the top 3 - 4 DL groups in the PAC 12. Big, strong and the competition for playing time will sharpen this group even further. Obi is for real, Pericak is a beast, someone lit a fire under Kasa, Cunningham and Bonsu are loads to move and the freshman are monsters! Hartigan, will do what he does very well - rush the passer.
2) Jon Major will be All-Conference. He is all over the field. Sunday he had a few sacks, yesterday he had a few sacks and today he had the three biggest hits of practice - first he seperated speedy from the ball on the last play of 9-7 for a defensive victory (the O had to do up-downs), next he rung E. Harringtons bell on a pass play and last he hammered speedy on a sweep. Major closes very fast. As far as the LB group, Cabral has been mixing up the 1-3 units a lot to get experienced guys working with the new guys. He is so good at bringing his group along. Rippy continues to gain confidence and is playing downhill, Mahke is very good in coverage, Webb can be explosive, Nobriga is a load and Daigh is going to be a very good one for us down the road. Top to bottom, this is solid group.
3) Thank god, Perkins is back. He is such a great leader and the glue for the secondary. Polk and Perkins are as good a tandem at safety as you will find anywhere. Perkins is the field general and will hit you in the mouth, Polk is lights out fast with solid ball skills, T. Smith keeps making plays and a case to be on the field (playing some nickel too), Sandersfield is also seeing time at corner but is Mr. Consistent at safety and nickel, last, the hype on Harlos is warranted - he will be a great one. Just like the DL and LB group, we are very solid at Safety.
4) We are going to be fine at corner. I am starting to see guys emerge. Sandersfield, Vigo and Deji are making plays. Also, when you are very good in your front 7 and at safety, you can protect your corners with your scheme. Pressure the QB and have over the top help and you are fine. Many NFL teams thrive in a cover 2 system, we can too. Brown is the right guy for this group.

All in all, our defense is light years ahead of the defense at this time last year. Not even close. We are big, fast, strong and have ball hawks, big hitters and playmakers all over the place. I am pumped. Will report more from the scrimmage this weekend. Cheers.

Welcome to the Board!! Great first Post!!! Thanks for the report!! You say better than the D this time last year? I assume this means you have been watching practices for a while? Good to have an experienced eye out there.

Good first post. I hope you are right about CB and the secondary as a unit, but I still think this is going to be are biggest area of concern with teams spreading the field.

You are hardly qualified to discuss homerism. You are blinder than a hooker in a cave on that issue.

A hooker in a cave? Rep for making up a superlative (that kind of worked).

I might have gone with "blinder than a hooker who would give SnowBuff a discount", but this will play. :smile2:

Having a front seven can help out a secondary to an extent, but it cannot hide a weak secondary. Until proven otherwise, our secondary is below average, even with an improved front seven.

Also, several NFL teams are going away from the Cover 2, they want a safety closer to the line of scrimmage.

Glad we have nothing to worry about on D, but you lost me at Mahnke has having good coverage skills.

Mahnke is pretty good in coverage being an ex-too-slow-safety. He's faster than most LB's.

The OP here is way too optimistic though. We will struggle all year to be solid defensively as we do not have studs at DB. Polk has struggled two years now and I've seen plenty of missed tackles by our secondary. I agree that the front 7 is pretty good.

We can be alright if we have smart corners who aren't elite physically, and we get a good pass rush. But by alright, I mean that Stanford, USC, AZ, UT and WSU will put up a lot of yards on us.

When the hell did Texas end up on the schedule?

I like this, brother! Great post. Makes me want to watch some Buff football! One metric I suggest adding is the number of fights between O-Line and D-Line. This is an excellent toughness metric in my not-so-very humble opinion.

Moniz may lose a bunch of WR's, but he did throw for 5000 yards and 39 TD's last year. 8th in QB rating in the NCAA. Hawai'i mos def be testing the d backfield for 4 quarters in the opener. be nice to see those guys "grow up" on the road but i'm leery. CU-UH, track meet.

be seeing quite a few guys on this list...actually.

UT = Utes.
Can't believe nobody went crazy when I slipped in WSU. I expect them to be pretty efficient in the passing game. All of the teams I mentioned have pretty good QBs returning. I left out Oregon, they have enough weapons that they won't need to try to pick on our CBs, they will just do what they do against everyone.

So I'll throw CSU in there. If they can protect Thomas, he will put 4 TDs on the board.
The Cal QB was pretty good at Buffalo.
The ASU QB (Oswalter) played late in the year and was really good, but makes some bad decisions, so we will see.
The Hawaii QB is really good, but I'm hopeful our pressure will get to him.

There's a reason P-Rich scores everytime he catches the ball right now.

I'm advocating keeping our expectations under control and hope we are pleasantly surprised. There's still time for Brown to find some young CBs to emerge.
