Pac 12 and Big 10 ADs find consensus on a "plus one"

kind of a weird article. does it not change "tone" in the middle? the insistent use of "NFL style playoff" seems off-putting by design. how about determining a real champion on the field.

i do think the exceptionalism of the Rose Bowl Pac-Big Ten thing is a little goofy. really? name how many times the Pac and Big Ten have played for a NC? not many over the last 20 years.

I think it's kind of funny that they're worried about the season going too long. If they played the big bowl games on New Year's Day like they traditionally did for decades, they could have the championship game the following week... and the season wouldn't be any longer than it currently is.

Make this happen and give me back my hangover football on NYD.

Better get used to it, that reverence for the Rose Bowl and the assumption that it is better than any other bowl out there is ingrained in our new conference.

They're right, though. It's the biggest one with the longest tradition.

I still remember when the Rose Bowl decided the NC almost every year. Of course, that was because USC was basically an NFL franchise, but still. The Rose Bowl is special, and going back to the Pac vs Big 10(ish) would make it special again.

Going to a plus one format for the NC makes a lot of sense, if you aren't doing a playoff. The way it is now, there is a completely separate NC game and the bowls have nothing to do with picking the NC at all, so its the worst of both worlds. It has the tradition killing aspect of a playoff with the arbitrary nature of the bowls.

But if you have the bowls go back to the way they were, and then pick two teams after that, that would fix most of the unfairness of the old bowl system without making the season too long or killing the bowl tradition.

Think about it: When the NC has been a controversy, a plus one would have settled things every time. In 90, GT and CU would have played. In 91, Washington and Miami could have played. In 97, Nebraska would have had the chance to get slapped around by Michigan, in 2001, Oregon and Miami, etc.
