It seems like there is some noise about how the Pac-16 would hurt CU in the long run. I'm not sure if that is truly accurate and this is more of a fear of the unknown. Here are some things to ponder:
1. We would have at least one trip to Texas (assuming UT comes along) every single year for recruiting purposes and I can't see the California to Boulder pipeline ever shutting down. This gives us a wonderful chance of building a Texas to Boulder pipeline and the same goes for Arizona as well. Suppose we all asked Bill McCartney and Gary Barnett about being in that division from a recruiting perspective...don't you think they would actually love that idea?
2. Not all the Pac-16 East division schools are football factories. Utah is enjoying some success that they haven't had for a long time but the Beehive State is known more for its basketball than football. Arizona is a basketball school while their rivals to the west is the football school of the state but they are a lot like Texas A&M: underachievers. Okie State is still a basketball school that is just doing very well in football right now just like Utah while OU will be the football factory. Texas is the football school and Texas Tech will be the basketball school of that duo. We have conquered Nebraska and OU in the same season in the past and conquering Texas & Oklahoma will be no different but on a bigger stage.
3. We are in a much better situation when it comes to basketball with that new practice facility opening this month. I have long viewed OU and UT basketball as hurdles that CU would have difficulty overcoming but with the new facility, that will no longer be the case.
4. We will be in the stronger division and that should help us over the long term...just look back to OSU & Texas Tech's football programs before they joined the Big 12. The support for new facilities will come at the right time just like with the new basketball facility.
5. We will clearly be the #3 program in this division only behind UT and OU. Utah, Arizona, and ASU are in for a rude surprise plus TT & OSU are teams that we have been able to keep up with in the past just not under Dan Hawkins. We would still be one of the top football programs in the Pac-16 over time given our history.
