Mac on 102.3 at 5:30 today (8/18/11)

Fight song

cj: Oh, yes, yes, yes. Talking about Hawaii. Talking about Embo. "My blood boils when I hear this song. Fortunate to have all time winningest coach, Mac."

Mac: Doing good.

CJ: No intro good enough

Mac: Flattery will get you everywhere

CJ: What about Miami and booster

Mac: Well, don't know much. Everything rises and falls on leadership. I worked for Bo. He would tell alums "you don't have the right to contact or approach an athlete. He laid down the law." Mentions all the schools in trouble. "These are kids who need leadership. Leadership has six definintions which Mac knows by heart. If you have leadership, the problems go away."

CJ: Lets go back to '82. CU had problems that you cleaned up. We don't talk about it. You put a new stamp. Talk.

Mac: "I benefited from Bo. CU has same potential as MU. When I got here, things were loose and I put things in place. Most difficult time at Orange Bowl. I told them, "Players, if you miss curfew, you go home." Told the Hemmingway story. He was put on a bus home. "I loved GH. He said no to a lot of programs" Everything depends on you and your leadership.

Cecil Lammie: Talking about death penalty, does it work, what should NCAA do?

Mac: "The death penalty hurts everyone. Penalize the coaches. Thats his responsibility to monitor and discipline. For Miami, indictment of the leadership. Kids will respond to the type of leadership. They are young and learning. They do what they want. I told Mom, I promise you this, if you support him, we will hold the line. Told a kid, if you live with a girl, I'm calling mom. If she's OK, I'm OK. If not, I'll penalize you and support mom." (I loved this story!!)

CJ: SMU recruited you after the Death Penalty

Mac: True. The best decision I've ever made was to stay at CU

CJ: Embo, you are excited. What do you think? What you advise fans to do? Patience?

Mac: Anyone knows, this sched is brutal, unfair. We have little depth. OLine needs to help us move the ball. Fans, look, these guys will get it done. Be more patient than ever. Freshman class is not good. Be long suffering. Go the distance. Rally around the team. Pac is great. We have something special. 16th in all time victories.

CJ: What roll will you play.

Mac: We are going to have a dinner at Pasta Joes every Thursday. First come first serve. They can handle fifty. We are going to get the fans, "Wired, fired, and inspired." If it goes well, it'll grow and grow. We are trying to create a tradition. If we can to go 500 or more, we will.

The guy is awesome!

Love Coach Mac, but I didn't like the part where he basically trashed the freshman class. Wish I could hit up those Pasta Jay's events.

I don't think he "trashed" them. If I remember, he said "we got some good players." I think his point was that Embo had little time to pull a class together and that down the road, it'll bet much better. We shall see.

Maybe that is what he was trying to say, but he did state the class "isn't good." Regardless, I am starting to get concerned about the repeated pleas from Mac for "patience." Seems like a warning sign from a man that knows a lot more about football than the AllBuffs mafia. Maybe we're looking at the three win season predicted by SI.

Thought it was 2?

DBT, I think that was actually a replay from yesterday because I remember them saying he was gonna be on but I missed it. The full replay is here:

Maybe, but it was on today for sure... I listened to it. I could listen to him talk for days about nothing, he is an amazing speaker. Sometimes I think it would have been a good idea to hire him for a year or two and train Embree/EB/Whoever his successor may be, but I think Embree will be a helluva a coach and in this day and age Mac may not have worked. But if you can't be motivated, inspired, or just plain believe in that man I feel sorry for you. Outside of football, I completely oppose this man and his beliefs, but my goodness does he know how to speak/inspire. (This must be how a lot of right wingers felt about Obama in 2008 ;).....JOKE, no comments necessary)

Never mind, I was being stupid there. Guess it would if I read the full thread title a little more closely.

No comments given.

I listened in. Mack is just nutty for the Buffs and I love him. As far as patience goes, I'll give Embree the same five years Hawk got.

Embree better show more in the first four years than Hawkins did. That is not too much to ask.

Question for the older guys....Did Mac send Hemingway home for the first or second Orange Bowl?

I'm kind of curious. It seems to me that Mac is kind of lost on the younger generation, which I understand. So, is it just us older guys who were around at the time who love Mac, or do you younger guys who weren't love the guy as well? At any rate, I'd bet that Embree and EB talk to him regularly.

He's a living legend. One of the things I really like about Embo is how focused he is on the program, reminds me of Mac that way.

I loved Mac's comment about players living with their girlfriends.

"If I find out about that, I'll call your momma. If she's okay with it, then I'm okay with it."

I agree we will have to be patient with Embree and giving him the same five years that Hawkins got is fair...we will need that patience since we lost a lot of players from last season and will lose a lot of players after this season. I believe that CU has a chance for a bowl game this season but I'm more nervous about 2012.

Hemingway was sent home from the 1990 Orange Bowl.

He was a key player in the 1991 Orange Bowl. You might recall him catching a couple important passes from Charles Johnson.
Where was his home? Mac said they put him on a bus and he had to ride the bus all the way home,.

i wouldn't read too much into Mac preaching patience. he did the same thing when gb was hired and when hawkins was hired.

he's trying to create a little cover for the staff so they have time to install their regime.

while i don't think our Buffs are likely to have a great season, i wouldn't necessarily conclude from Mac's statements that a bad season is inevitable.

if we get a bit lucky and can avoid injuries to key starters, there will be a chance. we've got a lot of gaps, but with good coaching, and a focus on fundamentals and execution, i think the team has enough bodies to compete with most of the teams on the schedule. i hope so, at least.

They needed him in the first one pretty bad too so it was a pretty significant loss. We need a fb like that now, Hemingway was a player.

I kind of fall in the middle. I was 12 when Mac coached his last game, so I have a few memories of him as the head coach. I love Coach, I love hearing him speak and I love that he maintains a strong connection to the program, but I've been a Buffs fan all my life.
