They sent the letter to the wrong person. Who is this Dan Beebe? I'm pretty sure he's not the Big 12 commissioner....

Texas A&M also requested that the Big 12 outline the process to be followed should the university elect to withdraw from the conference.

Hello? Have the Aggies been paying attention? Colorado and Nebraska just outlined the ****ing plan to perfection. Take better notes next time.

I'm getting the impression that this is a giant bluff on A&M's part. Asking for the procedures to leave? :wtf: Seriously. Just go. Like 99 said, CU and NU already did it. The pattern has been established. Just go.

Could this be the $EC covering their own ass against the threat of the Big XII suing them?

This is all just crossing t's and dotting i's based on what their lawyers think will help when this goes to court.

Why would this go to court? I don't remember there being any threats of legal action when CU and NU left. What makes this different?

I could be wrong, but I think the difference is, if this move ends up being the tipping point for the collapse of the Big 12. In that case, someone will be looking for a legal scapegoat for the tv contract money. If it's just A&M leaving and someone else joining, then yeah, I don't think it's much different than CU and NU leaving. Clearly, A&M and/or the SEC is worried about something, and they have gone into this very deliberate process. I'm just guessing it has something to do with cya for future lawsuits.

This is probably a smart move for them. It puts the onus onto the Big 12 to say what the penalty will be for leaving the conference.

My question is why would they be bluffing? They are already one of the chosen three with a sweetheart deal in the B12, what are they going to gain by bluffing they might leave? Concessions from UT on the LHN? Seems unlikely.

CU and NU never got to court because the sides agreed on a settlement number on the penalty for CU and NU leaving. But, either side could have held out on the negotiations and ended up in court.

I thought that with part of the new Big 12-2, with the new distributions, there was some much larger exit penalty? My memory sucks. Do they just still have the same structure as when CU and NU left?

I have read that there really is no new exit procedures or penalties.

I do not know. I haven't seen the new bylaws (assuming they are new).

I could be wrong but I thought that the Big XII changed the exit clause in their charter after CU and NU bolted. It might end up costing aTm more money.

From USA Today.....

League bylaws would require A&M or any other school that leaves to forfeit 90% of its share of Big 12 revenues over two years, an estimated $28 million in the Aggies' case. Colorado and Nebraska negotiated their exit fees down.

They may have, but if they did it's not in the bylaws. (At least not in the bylaws as they are currently published.)

They are pulling that from our good buddy Chip Brown.

A Big 12 official told OrangeBlood‘s Chip Brown that A&M could pay upward of $30 million in exit fees if they decide to leave the Big 12. If you remember from an earlier post covering a possible time frame for a departure, A&M would have to pay 90 percent of its conference revenue if it joined the SEC in 2012.

Big 12 Board Meeting this Saturday? This from the Houston Chronicle today:
An A&M insider said the letter is simply the first official, legal step in the process of A&M exiting the Big 12 for the SEC. The Big 12’s directors board is scheduled to meet on Saturday, the insider said, and perhaps at that time release the Aggies from the conference. If so, the SEC would then be free in the days following to invite A&M as its 13th member, and the Big 12 likely would officially begin its pursuit of a 10th member to take A&M’s place – perhaps BYU, Notre Dame, Houston or SMU, among other candidates

Baylor and Kenny* are threatening to sue the f'ing world over this.
