Last night was my brother's 40th birthday party at my mother's house. It was a nice dinner for 8 couples and we were able to have the TV on. First, the Oregon v. LSU game was on, then I put the CU Hawai'i game on....

There were 3 other guys very interested in the games and they knew enough about CU's history for me to accept their opinions on the matter because one of them said..... and I am paraphrasing..... you dropped off of the map after Barnett was canned..... what happened?

So they watched the first half of the Oregon game and then they watched ours....

Their reaction was: how in the world did some of these players make a D1 team.... most notably several offensive linemen, our kick returner, 1 corner, and QB. They were impressed with 2 of our linebackers and 2 of our DL's. The loved 1 WR and 1 RB.

No need to fill in names...... but they said we just do not have the athletes right now to compete on a consistent basis with the top 25 programs.

I for one, was happier than I have been about Colorado Football since the second quarter of the first game that Hawkins coached.

While there are problems, I saw a defense that played a better team defense than I have since Hawk was here.

Amen. Will take time for this to come together. mac was...what--1 and 10 in his first year? Not much better in his second? But built a powerhouse. And I think Embree will do the same thing. So engineer tell me how long they build the foundation of a skyscraper before you see the actual building start to rise? 70% of the total time? This ruin that hawkins created cannot be overcome in one off season. Too many sub-par players on the team. But I saw more attitude last night. Now to see if they can correct mroe and more things this week and become competitive.

Sounds like smart fans. The upper classes of this team is littered with dead weight and poor talent. Some nice pieces, the majority is poor talent

hopefully the o-line has some major changes and if these freshman can play then lets put them in and not redshirt them.

I expect that we're quickly going to see freshmen rotated in. Nik was noting this last night at the bar.

You guys who think its inevitable that we are top 25 every year are in for some serious disappointment. Fans on this board talk about contending for NCs. We aren't that team.

I think our defense is a piece or two short of being able to compete at the highest levels....and we'll get those pieces. Our offense is a complete o-line away from doing anything right.

Who the hell is talking about contending for NC's? Everyone knows that it's a rebuilding period...again unfortunatly, or at least should. Hopefully we got the right guys this time though and we can be like UW is now in a year or two.

Surprisingly there wasn't that many true frosh playing last night. I only saw Daigh, McCulloch, Henderson and the K/P

I do think UW is heading in the right direction, but they're still in year 3 of rebuild (only two full recruiting classes by the new coaches). Here is a list of the player participation yesterday for them (thanks to Guch on Dawgman).

UW players vs. Eastern:
6 true freshmen
9 redshirt freshmen
16 sophomores
10 juniors
4 seniors
6 fifth year seniors (includes 2 kickers and a longsnapper)
(60% are true sophomores or younger -- not good and an indictment as to how bad the previous staff was, you just don't win without 4th and 5th year seniors leading the charge)

I also read that 16 players got their first college playing time for UW yesterday.

The point is it takes a few years of solid recruiting and coaching to get back to where a program should be when it's been burned to the ground. I absolutely think Embree and Co. will do great things at CU, but it is going to take a little time... they haven't even had a full recruiting cycle yet. The future is bright for CU but there will be some growing pains for awhile.

My dad pulls for the Buffs but isn't a diehard like I am since he's not an alum. He's been aghast at just how horrific our OLine play has been these last few years, and correctly predicted that there would be very little improvement (or none at all) on that front this year. Hyping up returning starters and their "experience" is a joke when they're all mediocre at best. Hopefully Embree and Marshall can change the culture with the OLine as the season progresses -- aside from playing poor, they're noticeably extremely soft. Hansen really disappointed me last night as well. The OLine didn't do him any favors, but much of it was Hansen himself. He still stares down one receiver just like he did when he was thrown into the KSU game in '08. I'm not sure how much progression we're going to get from him. Sure his situation with Dan and Cody sucked, but part of the soap opera was carried on by the fact that Hansen has been mediocre and did very little to separate himself.

This was really a sickening performance last night. I've prepared myself for this year to be a long season (predicted 5-8), but this game was far too reminiscent of the Hawkins era from the fumbled snap on our first offensive play. I know changing the culture of being a loser laughingstock football program will take time, but it's alarming because this was a Hawaii team that isn't exactly loaded with talent, and a team we beat 31-13 last season to boot. It'll be interesting to see what adjustments are made for Cal. Tall task to get a win, but I want to see this team show some grit and toughness. As bad as we've been, they've defended Folsom relatively successfully over the past few years, and one would hope that this team would be fired up to get another shot at Cal (although I'm sure what exactly this team does get fired up for anymore). I'll be flying in from Virginia for the game - let's get a great crowd to Folsom to welcome Coach Embree and show this team that we're not ready to toss this season away. I know this team won't roll over and they'll win some games that will surprise us. This isn't November, it's early September - this team needs to crank it up a notch, get scrappy, and find a way to win us some ballgames this year.
