Game recap and observations

Nice writeup!

Is Cal's new QB a running threat? If not then I think we have a great chance at abusing him all day.

Nice nik. And it looks like tclem may be done. Mcclough really took advantage of his opportunity.

Not so fast. Moniz wasn't considered a running threat either. Our defense is just THAT slow

Bryant Moniz:

2009 season: 58 attempts for 117 yards (1 TD)
2010 season: 81 attempts for 102 yards (4 TDs)
2011 CU game: 14 attempts for 121 yards (3 TDs)

Last year, he had 6 attempts for -5 yards against us. (0 TDs). Longest run of his career before Saturday was 34 yards (57 against us on Saturday).

wow its like the Toledo game all over.

Our front seven is not slow, we were just too aggresive at times and that when Moniz hurt us. I thought our defense looked good for the most part with some breakdowns.

Saying that any of our offensive linemen "got worked" when the opponent was Hawaii is downright embarrassing and scary.

Agree, I was thinking this as I watched the game. I thought our defense played well enough to not only beat Hawai'i. but beat a lot of teams. Our O-line is embarrasing. Defense is gonna keep us in games this year, but how long can it last before they get worn out and give in?

Defense only looked good because we blitzed just about every single play, and Hawaii's QB struggled in the 1st half. He missed about half a dozen wide open receivers in the 1st half. He burned the Buffs with his legs on those long runs because after we blitzed there was absolutely nothing in the middle to stop him.

It looked, to me, like a game plan of desperation. Greg Brown didn't want to leave the defensive backfield on an island - so he sent the front 7 after the QB every single down, and hoped the pressure would get to the QB before receivers could get open. The strategy worked so long as that pretty girl QB for Hawaii staying in the pocket. As soon as he started stepping up and running down the middle the defensive game plan was shot.

As for the offensive line, they should all be embarrassed. I do not know what their problem is, whether it is talent, or coaching, or scheme, or what. But Hawaii defenders were in the CU backfield every play, run or pass.

Colorado's offense, aside from a couple players - is SLOW. Richardson is fast - and needs to see the ball a LOT more. Deehan made a couple catches but he is ZERO threat with the ball in his hands. Speedy dances WAY too much - and someone explain why we try to run wide on ANYONE? We are way too slow of foot to take the ball to the sidelines.

I saw a couple of pass plays where the OT's moved back way to fast collapsing the pocket. I also saw a couple of times where Miller was standing with no man to block. I would like to see him help down on the tackle or center to clear out the middle for Hansen to step up into.

Pass rush was ok but I would like to see them work on not over-pursuing. We would get good edge rush, but there o-line did its job and cleared the middle allowing Moniz to step up in the pocket.

So in summary, contain the middle on the d-line and open up the middle on the o-line. And we need to run block a lot better. Stewart's big runs came on the outside. Our center and guards need to bust there butts and open up some run lanes.

Hope not. Not to take anything away from Tyler, because he continues to work hard to make some plays. But it would be a shame for someone with T Clem's ability to remain a non-factor on the offense. 12 games left, hopefully he can get it figured out in a hurry.

T Clem has ability?

I hate calling people out, so I will just say that whomever is returning punts and kicks needs to make the first gunner miss and head straight upfield. Trying to beat others around the outside and running out of bounds won't cut it.

Nice write-up nik.

I totally agree that there's a lot of um.. dead weight on our roster right now. This team needs a serious infusion of talent in the next couple of years.

I'm so sick of fair catching every damn punt return

I think we should put DD back to return punts and kicks. Speedy and P-Rich seem to be a little hesitant, they have nothing to prove. Put DD back there and he will try to make big plays.

They didn't kick to proich once. He played a perfect game at punt returner. Replacing him cause he fair caught the ball when he was supposed to is dumb

Lets try it, I'm used to seeing good punt returning. We have had some good history with that with guys like Jeff Campbell, Chris Hudson, Ben Kelly, Jeremy Bloom etc.

Exactly the guys that have to prove their worth with the return.

Rather have PRich or Speedy call fair catch than not and get rocked, risk injury, and turn the ball over inside the 20 and give the other team fantastic field position.

No no no, good punt returners can't call for a fair catch when the situation calls for it.

Yes. That's what you do when you fair catch the ball. Your point?

It's dumb, you don't need to be fair catching all the time. There were a couple times when a good returner could have done something by making the first guy miss. You need some guts!

I watched every punt my man. He never had a chance. Our punt return blocking sucked and they kicked it high. There was always a guy already to him before he caught it, and he was usually bracketed.
