CU & NU Buyout of the Big 12- Question

no longer awaiting CU football's return... we here

The buyout was based on damages and future revenue lost because both teams left the conference. Does anyone know if a portion is recoverable if the Big 12 dissolves after this season?

I would hope that was a negotiating point. CU and NU may have just said.... good riddance, it is worth it to us to just leave..... but maybe they were able to get that in the settlement agreement.

Anyone know?

It might be something to bring up with the Texas AD when they are negotiating to get into our new conference, as thats the only leverage we have. If the conference blows up, we should at least get the share of our penalty taken by the teams joining a new pac-16. I doubt we managed to get that agreed to when we left, however. The buyout to leave was laid out in the conference rules.

If the Pac-12 becomes the Pac-16, they better be writing a check to CU. If the conference doesn't pick up the 2010 Big 12 reduction we suffered or the estimated loss of not having a conference payout for 2011, then we are getting completely ****ed in this whole thing.

Someone has to make sure that doesn't happen.

If they're talking about putting us in an East division that hardly plays on the west coast on top of it, that would be doubly ****ed up.

I may have to start doing some nut kicking around campus until they make the Junta the operating board for the athletic department.

What about the reduced money the Buffs are getting from the Pac 12 this season?

Exactly. The only conference money we're getting is a 1/12 share of the new money from the conference championship game.

Someone better be writing a check to us for about 18 million bones.

It would be kind of funny if the Pac-12 offered membership to OU, UT, TT, OSU -- for a fee. Gotta pay dues, and all that.

I think $15 million is a reasonable entry fee.

Really looking forward to rewinding back to the Big 12...trips to Lubbock, Norman, Stillwater, and Austin...instead of Cali.....sweet.....

Utah, CU, AU and ASU have the votes to stop this, if they still need a 3/4th vote to accept new members. I'm pretty sure ASU and AU aren't thrilled at the thought of being the new big 12 south with Texas and OU anymore than we are.

And demanding a really big check from Texas and OU along with what the conference is asking for (equal revenue sharing and an end to the Longhorn network) gives us the cover to say no to Texas without ticking off our new conference mates on the west coast. I think its pretty unlikely that Texas will agree to getting rid of the Longhorn network, let alone giving us 18 million bucks.

I sincerely hope Bohn and Benson have the good sense to be lobbying AU and ASU to keep Texas out of the Pac 12.

I'm sure that Bohn understands this and is raising a stink about it.

Those four Big 12 teams should pay an entrance fee that also includes $2 million dollars to CU to cover that lost revenue.

Actually the leaving the conference penalty was written into the bylaws of the conference - it was not a damages clause per se - Basically you lose two years of conference revenues if you give one year notice and one year of conference revenues if you give two years of notice. CU gave two years notice and was able to negotiate a deal to get out with one year notice at a cost of much less than one year of revenue. (The by-law statement is a starting point for negotiations).

It was a negotiated settlement, signed and over. There is no coming back on either side which is how it should be in the world.

fify - although I think you were trying to imply just that (Wally, did I use "imply" properly?)

Wally would be proud. I was able to infer from Slade's post that he wants a wheelbarrow of oil-scented cash to show up at Dal Ward.

well boys, some things never change, huh?

I was really pulling for KU to be included in the Pac 16 expansion, but OU strong-arming the conference to bring oSu is just a bad precedent, the sort of stuff from which UT athletics is made. Every school ought to be considered on its own merits. I'm now resigning myself to KU playing the vast majority of its road games somewhere east of Lawrence, and think its probably best for KU if Texas and OU are going to throw their weight around in the Pac 14/16. Good luck with that!

Yeah. We were hoping that we'd get KU. OSU is a repeat market that does nothing to move the financial needle. It's also sub-par on academics. KU would get us the solid Kansas City market plus the decent number of homes on the Topeka and Wichita cable systems. Plus, with KU, UCLA and Arizona it would immediately put us in the conversation with the ACC and Big East for hoops supremacy.

I kind of get Texas Tech. It helps us bridge New Mexico as a fly-over state with confidence that Tech from the east, UA and ASU from the west, and CU from the north would ensure that the Pac-16 network got coverage in the pretty good and growing Albuquerque/Santa Fe market. There's also a bit of a history with the Arizona schools.

Finally, I know this is about athletics, but when we're talking Pac-12 we have to acknowledge that bringing something to the table as a graduate research university is important. KU is a great fit on that criteria. TTU has at least gotten the funding, state legislative backing, and has a plan in place to achieve Tier 1 status and AAU membership. OSU? If they sent an AAU application, it was written in crayon.

Our only hope is that the Big 10 grabs Missouri and that the SEC makes a play for OSU before the Pac-12 is able to move on this. Then, as long as the Big 10 doesn't make a play for Kansas we are looking at KU-OU-UT-TT for Pac-12 expansion. That is our ideal scenario as long as there isn't a demand for special UT benefits/status in the conference. However, if they do go down that road the conference is fully prepared to move to its Plan B of KU-MU-OU-OSU.

I am not implying that CU should go after the Big 12. I was hopeful that there might be a a clause in the penalty fee that would give some back if the Big 12 were to fold within a short time period. My gut is that Texas will not pay this penalty to the remaining members now because they will declare the Big 12 dead.

'nik, I live in NM... and I can tell you that people here really couldn't care less about college athletics. Yes, 17,000 rabid fans pack the Pit on a cold winter night to watch some hoops, but honestly you can't go in a barbershop anywhere in Kansas and not sit down in a chair to hear passionate talk about KU and KSU... here if they talk sports at all its pretty much the Cowboys or the Broncos, and the Lobos get a mention if they are leading the WAC/Big West/MWC (whatever they're calling the league these days) and then its "can they actually make a sweet 16" because with all of its success, UNM has never won two games in one NCAA tourney. Crazy, I know.

Kansas City and Wichita are quintessential college sports towns who also love the Chiefs and the Royals, whereas here its hiking, skiing and the NFL.

On point analysis of the sports atmosphere in NM - my brother-in-law has the same point of view in Las Cruces.

New Mexico has college sports? Who knew? Lol jk. Yep Lobo basketball is about as big as it gets around here. Hell, there are probably more Arizona, ASU, and Texas fans in my area than UNM. Pro sports is all Cowboys and Broncos as mentioned.

I gotta call BS on your post. I have been to KC several times and everyone is decked on in Chiefs gear. The Royals don't exist and KU doesn't exist outside of Lawrence.

I'm originally from Kansas and most of my extended family is from there. Chiefs are huge, but they're big sports fans in general. Royals are very popular, especially with the over 35 set who think you get to go to George Brett's house when you die. And the hatred between KU and KSU fans is epic. It's just more of a basketball thing and there is no pro hoops in Kansas.

why are the Royals so bad with attendance? they are very close to the bottom in terms average attendance and percentage of capacity.

Because they have been losing for so long. It's kind of like Pittsburgh at this point. Great baseball fans that would love to get behind the team, but they're not exactly feeling motivation to spend a bunch of money to go to the ballpark and see the product they've put out for the past 15 years.
