Earlier this evening, Notre Dame and Texas jointly presented the Big Ten Conference with their proposed terms of entry into the conference. These terms resulted from lengthy discussions among both schools and the Big Ten over the past several months.

The major items include:
1. The preservation of an eight game (plus championship) conference football schedule. Both ND and Texas wish to preserve rivalries with non-Big Ten universities on a regular basis. This would require the Big Ten to abandon its current plans of a 9 game conference schedule.
2. The staggering of the schedule to allow for mid-season scheduling with non-conference football opponents.
3. The preservation of the status quo conference makeup until approximately 2014, unless the Big XII fails to retain key (NOT including A&M) conference members. This will provide the member schools, acting in unison, with the greatest leverage negotiating ongoing television contracts, particularly with ESPN.
4. Should Texas depart the conference for the Big Ten before ND due to the further disintegration of the Big XII, ND will remain independent until approximately 2014
5. The Longhorn Network would remain independent until approximately 2014, at which point the network would become a part of an expanded Big Ten Network (specifically referred to as "BTN2"), likely either in partnership with Fox, NBC, or less likely ABC

The Big Ten just wrapped up a meeting to initially consider all of the terms presented by the schools, including the aforementioned.

Notably, there is a general discontent with the reporting of the situation by ESPN with specific regard to Texas. ESPN has, for self-serving purposes, drastically exaggerated the lean of Texas to the Pac12 conference in nearly all commentary. ESPN has essentially waged a propaganda campaign to drive support among the Texas stakeholders to the Pac12 conference. ESPN has gone so far as to attempt to accelerate the disintegration of the Big XII to pressure Texas into making an immediate conference change decision. Texas has steadfastly resisted change, and will do so until the appropriate time occurs for Texas to stand in a strong position to renegotiate television contracts, including with ESPN.

In reality, the preference expressed by Texas' relevant leadership is to depart the Big XII for the Big Ten at the time that gives Texas the greatest leverage in negotiating a new television rights deal. The Big Ten and Texas agreed that Texas should do what is best for Texas, which they also both agree is a move by Texas to join the Big Ten Conference. Delaney's top priority has been to create an environment for Texas and Notre Dame to join the conference on mutually benefical terms.

Notre Dame has an interest in preserving its traditional rivalries, three of which occur already in the Big Ten, and creating a new national rivalry with a traditional powerhouse. The Big Ten believes that ND prefers independence, but realizes that it will soon have no choice but to join a conference. The Big Ten also believes that ND is trying to position itself so that if it must join a conference, it does so on the most favorable terms possible. Hence the return to the 8 game schedule and a protected game with national power Texas. The Big Ten will attempt to create a mutually beneficial environment for ND that allows it to preserve a great deal of independence to retain all its traditional rivalries within the conference context.

The initial mood at the Big Ten to the terms provided by the two schools is "receptive."

The beginning of the end of the Big 10. Would love to see it. Please, oh please yes. Make this happen. Can you imagine the meetings with Penn St., Ohio State, Michigan, ND and Texas all in the same room? Classic.

Notre Dame just wants to maksure they get to beat Army every year and Air Force and NAvy every other year.

This brings a smile to my face...UT and Nebraska in the same room.

Holy crap, I had forgotten about them. Yeah, that makes this even better. Please make this happen. It needs to happen. The comedy forthcoming from this would be pure gold.

I dont see Nebraska wanting any part of this. All I know is it's good to have a home in the Pac 12, we can just be spectators to all of this.

Anyone know how voting works in the B1G? Must be unanimous? 3/4 majority? Just trying to see if even NU votes no, this could all still be a wet dream come true.

They must be thinking of a different UT than I am. Ive never known them to do right by anyone but themselves.

This would be the best situation for me, personally. CU in the awesome PAC 12 without Texas schools, and Texas in a newer better Big 10. I would be in football heaven. Please let this happen.

Or you could just stop rooting for a soulless, evil, scum sucking, ****bag of a University.

If this happens it won't be the PAC 12 anymore-
got to think OU & OSU make it 14 if not KU and gulp ...ksu to make it 16

I would love for that to happen...if we HAVE to go to 16, then take OU, OSU, MU and KU---subsittue NM for anyone except OU.....

And Baylor should say good riddance to UT, and get Houston, Rice, SMU and TCU to round out the B12. With 16 they could take CSU, Boise, BYU and? SDSU? and start the 16 team non-BCS conferences...

No way the PAC 12 takes KSU....and KU knows that no top level conference is taking KSU..that is why they are stating that they are not tied to KSU.

Just a thought...that Baylor should try to ride a BCS conference into adding the other schools that will be looking to move up in the WAC and MWC. Rather than moving down. Try all they can to move those top school in those conferences into maintaning BCS status with the Big 12 name. I dont personally see a big difference between KSU and ISU and most of those school anyway.

Yes, this would be a dream scenario, but it feels too good to be true. NDs contract expires in 2014, so they are likely in line to make the jump (no way NBC re-ups at a price relative to what the conference are going to be getting at that point). Tex though? Would love to see it happen, but not going to eagerly refresh for confirmation on this one.....maybe in 2013.

No freakin way this is legit.

UT is saying ANYTHING to get OU back to the table to the Big 12, including pulling the whole 'Go on. Just go. I don't need you anymore.' card.

If Texas and ND go to the Big 10 then the PAC is absolutely in the drivers seat with the remainding Big XII schools. Texas is the only Big XII school with the financial pull to force another school on the PAC, OU is a long time great program but does not have the same financial power as Texas.

14 schools is a lot easier to administer that 16. You can run two divisions of 7, each team plays 6 games in division and 3 out plus 3 OOC. In the future I would not be at all surprised to see the schedule expanded to 13 games meaning 6 games in and 4 out allowing for each team to visit Cali at least once a year.

Without Texas dragging Tech along it would be easier for the PAC to tell OU and KU that their invitations don't include little brothers. Without Texas and A&M (and maybe Mizzou to the SEC) the value of the remaining Big XII to television is greatly reduced, OU and KU will have to move or go down with the ship. In that situation they will be able to shed their conference affiliations with their state schools (especially with the promise to keep playing them OOC.)

Nobody can adequately explain to me the need for the Pac 12 to expand. I don't care if everybody else is at 14 or 16 teams. There's no good reason for us to do the same.

That would be hilarious for Nebraska, they're Texas' bitch. As long as the whornes aren't with CU, I don't give a flying **** where they are.

if the b10 goes to 14 with texas and nd and the sec goes to 14 with atm and team X (maybe mizzery?), then you have to take it to the bank that the p12 will not stand pat. the ou/osu thing seems most likely to me at that point. there is no way in hell that the p12 takes kjuco state. no way. they'll hold their nose and take osu because they get ou and because pickens will promise lots of $$$$ to improve osu's academics.

watch and see.

To a large extent you are correct. We aren't going to go to a system of 16 team conferences without the conferences agreeing to it and they are not going to go there without the agreement of the PAC, they aren't going to give up the western half of the country including the SoCal market.

The schools they are talking about adding don't necessarily increase the media value of the conference enough to balance the shares that those schools would get and don't neccessarily add to the marketability of the individual schools products in the conference. I don't see people in Seattle or Berkley clamoring to see their teams play Tech or the Cowboys.

As I said earlier it is all about money. If the monetary value of the additions and changes exceed the cost in distributions and other impacts then it will happen, I am sensing though that some of the universities leadership, reflected by the comments of Benson, is starting to say "hold on a minute, let's take a closer look."
