Official: Pitt and Syracuse to the ACC

That would be it for the Big East as a BCS conference. Even though Syracuse has been down and Pitt hasn't played to its talent, those are the two programs in the conference with national championships and Heismans in the trophy cases.

I'm looking for West Virginia to be #14 to the SEC.

Syracuse was one of the ACC's preferences (over VT) last time around 7 years ago, but they futzed around with the offer which gave VT time to bitch and moan and get the strings pulled. Granted, in the time since then VT has had nothing but 10 win seasons while Syracuse has continued to stay in the CFB doldrums, so in retrospect it worked out for the best for the ACC. Hard to get excited about Pittsburgh either, they've fielded some halfway decent teams here and there lately, but their fanbase is really weak..even by Big East standards. Obviously both schools bring solid (extremely physical) hoops to the ACC

So much for a soft landing spot for the Big 12 programs that get left at the altar.

Just add in UT and TTU mix with water from the Atlantic and you have the 16 team ACC, and the Pac 12 is Texass free.

I think we'll see the Big 10 get to 16 with Notre Dame, Kansas, Missouri and Rutgers.

ACC is being smart to be proactive here, because the Big 10 is always slow to move and they couldn't afford to lose Syracuse or Pitt in the expansion sweepstakes.

then who's the new 4 in the PAC 16 other than OU & Diet OU ?

Rutgers? I think you are probably overstating their significance in the New York market.

Not at all. I'm realistic about their academic rep, the New Jersey recruiting grounds, Penn State needing a travel partner, the fact that the conference favors state land grant universities... and the value of getting the Big 10 Network onto a basic tier in New Jersey with a much better position for Philadelphia and New York City.

I think that it will be UT and TTU. We'll work out a deal where ESPN sells the conference TLN as part of the deal and the Pac-16 will make it a Texas/Oklahoma regional Pac-16 network. UT will have to deal with equal revenue sharing, but will get a bonus through the buyout money that will allow it to save face and claim a win.

Maybe...but there is also some speculation that the Pitt and Syracuse are two schools ND likes to play from the Big East, and if the Big East is going to be self destructing...possible the ACC pulls a coup and gets to 16 by offering "associate member" status, e.g. gets a commitment for X number of football games per year, and plays them in all other sports? ACC is essentially ESPN's house league since they own almost all of their TV rights with the exception of some overflow stuff for Raycom. Maybe ESPN promises to up the ACC's deal to be at least competitive with the PAC if not top it as a sweetener, protects UT's "precious", positions themselves to bid on ND's rights next time they come up, and completely jacks Delaney's or Scott's ability to create a completely market dominant league that ESPN doesn't own.

Well played ESPN if I'm right, that is one devious company. As expected, the stupid LHN is nothing more than their ploy to maintain their dominant position in CFB.

Rutgers is a joke and Big Ten doesn't need them at all. I think the Big Ten is perfectly fine at 12 and won't expand unless they get ND.

Wow, big **** popping off at 9:30pm PST.

Big east is done. Syracuse, Pitt, & WVA basically gone. I don't know why ACC wouldn't just try and collect Rutgers as well and pair them all up together. How bad does that **** burger taste now, TCU? Might be begging back into the Mountain West very soon.

Obviously the SEC is going to have to over extend their initial move now that the ACC has thrown the gauntlet on the floor. I expect them to go hard and heavy for WVA and Mizzou for #14 & 15. I'm not quite sure where they will turn for #16. I guess OU/OSU are still on the table until further notice.

If the rumors are true about the B10 accepting propositions from Texas & Notre Dame, then the Irish may be on the table if Texas actually commits in football to the ACC. If this happens then I would think Rutgers, KU, & Mizzou would make a lot of sense for them.

would so much rather have ku than ttu but I guess we really need that Lubbock market.

Does the Big East become pro-active and go after 2 teams to replace them, or do they just curl up and die like the Big 12-2, and do nothing.

Will need at least three...West Virgina is most likely headed towards the SEC. Since the ACC upped withdraw fees to $20 million, VT probably will stay. The big question is who will get the SEC's #16 spot after WVU and 'Zou?

Big East is probably going to have to wait and see what happens and then band together with teams as best it can. There's probably hope that by keeping the "Big East" there is the ability to maintain AQ under current rules. It may not be "East" any more, but maybe it can start from Cincinnati, USF and TCU. From those 3, pull in the best of C-USA with the Big 12 teams that don't find a home. It might survive.

Gawd I hope so.

It sucks to feel powerless... so glad we got out when we did.

Same ESPN story claims that the ACC agreed to up their buyout to $20 million, looks like no one is leaving. ESPN has got to be bank rolling their power play, likely as a check against the three leagues that either have or want their own networks. B1G just got effed for expansion. This could also be a play to keep the SEC and ACC at 14 a piece, and either the PAC at 14 or 12, and the Big 12 may actually have to hang together minus TAMU in some unholy death pact.

It makes it easier for Rutgers to apply for membership in the B1G...so that's probably four BE teams on the move.

The league upping the buyout isn't automatic, I have yet to see where they stated that "each school signed" for that change. Remember what happened in the WAC? They upped the buyout but Nevada never signed it, so they avoided paying the penalties that Fresno did by signing it and Utah State got shafted for being too quick with the pen.

Could just be a formality but still have to wonder about Florida State in this situation.

The SEC could be looking at the Seminoles, Mountaineers, Aggies, and either the Missouri Tigers or hopes of landing either the Longhorns, Sooners, or Hokies.

Maybe even Louisville Cardinals are a solid back-up plan for their team 16?

Interesting article with some great lines:

"There is no scenario where a president applies to a league and isn't admitted," a Big East official told CBSSports.com

I think in talking [to other BCS commissioners] -- all of us -- what we want to do is what's best for our conference. We had some very thorough [talks] in the past year because of last summer -- that weren't very public -- but they were very thorough.
-John Swofford, ACC Commissioner

An ACC official also indicated Texas has "reached out" to the ACC, but any speculation that Texas is joining the ACC is "premature."

Wow, IF Pitt and Syracuse go ACC, look for UT and TT to likely be numbers 15 and 16, with UT immediately agitating for the ACC CCG and conference office moving to Austin.

WVU will likely be SEC #14, Mizzou #15 and ??? will possibly be #16, with aTm #13.

The B12-2-1 will die.

The Big (L)East will be down to 6 with WVU, Pitt and Syracuse leaving, and will likely scoop up the B12-2-1 leftovers (Bailer, ISU) and maybe raid the C-USA to cobble together some mutant BCS AQ hopeful.

OU and Okie lite will look to the Pac, and maybe KU and some combo of KjSU or some other palyer (UNM?) will fillout the Pac to 16.

This is going to be weird.

With one BCS AQ dying, will another be anoninted, or will the rich get richer, or will the superconferences band together in a CFB Hall of Justice Superfriends fashion and deal a death blow to the NCAA?
