Facemask/horsecollar on Speedy

Buffarino

Math - how does it work?

Anyone else think some penalties should be more than just 15 yards? That dude full-on grabbed the facemask with his right hand and cranked Speedy's neck around while performing a horse collar with the left, and landing his 300+ lb right on top of Speedy. We were extremely fortunate that there was not a repeat of Von Miller's leg breaking tackle on that.

15 yards just doesn't seem like it's enough with stuff like that, IMO. What do you folks think?

I have wondered if certain penalties in addition to meritting the yardage assessment shouldn't result in the player spending some time on the sidelines. My thinking has been in terms of a dangerous unsportsmanlike conduct but would certainly apply to facemask and horsecollar tackles as well as highly dangerous blocks on guys legs. Put the offending player on the sidelines until there is a change of possetion or if you prefer for the rest of the quarter. Either way the result of making a dangerous play is that your team loses your services for a period of time. This would also make the penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct a little more real to the players involved instead of just having an interuption to the game and an offsetting penalty.

In a way that facemask was similar to the horsecollar against Tech that cost Speedy a good part of the season so your point is valid.

IMO, that play deserved an ejection. Whether it was a CU player or an opposing player, you're playing with someone's life when you grab by the facemask AND the collar.

Very well could have fractured something in his spine or another injury.

I'm not sure it deserved an ejection, although it was very rough and dangerous.

Question of the day after watching NFL: What would the NFL fine have been?

Where is the line drawn? When is the penalty "too" excessive?

If there are decent answers to the question, I could be convinced.

I don't know. I think some (like that one) are blatantly obvious. Others would not be. That fat **** could have ended Speedy's season and/or seriously hurt him with that bull****.

More than that - that type of tackle could end a career or even a life. And that is exactly why it deserves an ejection. No homer - if one of our players pulled that ****, I would expect an ejection. And trust me, Embo and EB would not be giving them an easy time about it.

Well, in this case, 15 yard face mask penalty WITH a horse collar = ejection. I think that is a straight forward and fair rule.

That's a good point. Referees absolutely hate it when the rules force them to try to judge intent and make judgment calls. I don't blame them.

I think we get better officiating when they have clear rules that have defined penalties. A great move was to make a facemask penalty 15 yards every time. For a long time, we had something similar to what was suggested here. Refs had to try to distinguish between what was a 5 yard facemask and what was a 15 yard facemask.

You may have a point here. If there's a double personal foul on the same player on a play, he should probably be gone.

Judging intent is very difficult, and I don't think it's something we should be asking the officials to do. The facemask is surprisingly easy to grab when going for a tackle at full speed. And letting go is harder than it sounds once bodies start falling. In this case, I would be extremely surprised if the CSU guy intended to grab the facemask.

It's football, **** happens. He wasn't going for the facemask on purpose.

Ordinarily I would agree with you, but there was something about the play that made me think the punishment should have been worse. Maybe it was the fact that Speedy already got a leg broken once from a horsecollar. Maybe it was the double foul nature of the play (facemask and horsecollar happening together).

I thought horsecollar when I saw it. If not fines, suspensions for something so flagrant.
BTW wasn't it Von Miller and A&M that put Speedy out?

Im proud that our team didnt ****ing kill that guy and offset the 15 yards. But, if it was any other time in the game I would be calling for at least one player to get up in their face and stand up for speedy.

Doesn't matter. He first yanked Speedy's mask to the right and then proceeded to yank him down via a horse collar. That's a play that can easily result in neck injuries and/broken bones. It was 100% intentional and very worthy of a ejection.

if you dont want people grabbing your facemask, don't wear a facemask. Or wear one with openings so small fingers can't get in.

Facemasks will always happen in tackle football, as will helmet to helmet hits - and 95% of the time these are not on purpose. I think the penalty fits the crime just fine.

Don't wear a facemask? What are you smoking? Problem with that tackle is that he yanked his facemask back, didn't attempt to release and then yanked him down with a horsecollar. That's two personal fouls right there and he should have been ejected. I'm all for physical football but you also need to protect the players and that was an uncalled for penalty.

Absolutely true! I was tackled just like this in high school and I haven't been the same since. I suffered massive nerve damage in my neck and now have a gimp left arm. I never played football again, and it almost cost me my lacrosse scholarship also. I went to physical therapy everyday for 3 months just to feel my arm again, unfortunately with the feeling also came blinding pain! After 9 months of daily physical therapy I was mostly pain free, but the nerves in my left arm only fire at about 50% to this day and give me a lot of trouble. I hope Speedy doesn't have any lingering effects. Pulling the facemask is one thing, torqueing the helmet 180 degrees and then yanking a player down by it is a whole different ballgame!

Trust me, CU is going to tackle somebody by their facemask this season. Glass houses people.

I guess you could have it where there could be a possible ejection. Honestly, I didnt think the guy did it intentionally, looked like he was just trying to make a play. Would you look for intent or simply that it was a severe facemask or both to enforce an ejection or say a double personal foul? I think officials would go overboard as per usual and find a way to **** up said rule. Thats jmho tho, Im not too fond of officials lol.
