Through three games, #Buffs QB Tyler Hansen has a 143.0 passer rating. In seven games last season, he had a 129.5 passer rating. #CUBuffs
My thoughts, take them fwiw. Writing this cause I need a distraction.

His efficiency rank is 49th in the country right now. So he's average at that. However, his YPA is 8.22, which is probably about 30th or better... but take that with a grain of salt with Prich doing most of the work. What is really holding him down is his completion % of 54.6 or so, which is not very good. Putting it in persepctive, only 3 guys in the top 50 have less than 60%.

Also, 5 TDs, 1 INT. We need him to keep getting better. I've seen him get better every single game. That UH game was not good. But he put the ball in the right spot for Prich to get it. Then in the Cal game he missed some throws, but still played light years better. Where he really struggled is running and his deep ball. In the CSU game, he finally shrugged off his obvious (to me, anyways) fear of running and fear of getting hit and regained his scrambling form. However, he still missed on some crucial longer throws. But not as badly as he did against cal. He was not helped by his receivers having the dropsies on shorter routes, but I think he hurt himself on those throws by lacking touch.

His stats so far compared to last year are more reflective of having a legit WR threat (Prich wasn't there yet when he was playing last year) and with playcalling (see Tclems long TD off playaction against CSU). TH needs to continue his upward trend for us to sniff 5 wins this year.

Where I've seen clear improvement this year:
1. Scrambling. I think he was still very gunshy from the spleen injury last year, and getting destroyed in the UH game did not help. It was painfully evident against Cal that he just didn't want to get touched on those runs, and it cost us at least one first down, which is the kind of thing that costs you a close game. However, he seems to have gotten over it, cause he sure ran like a boss and didn't mind taking a hit to get a TD or a first down against CSU.

2. Pocket presence: He is starting to feel it. Against Cal he had some great adjustments, and although I haven't rewatched CSU yet, I remember him doing pretty well even though his tackles were anything but dependable.

3. Looking Deep: He's finally looking for plays longer than 10 yards, especially on play actions. This is more compared to last year than this year. Last year, he was competing with checkdown for the worst YPA. Starting in the 2d half of the UH game, he has continually been looking downfield.

Where I haven't seen improvement:
1. Long Range Accuracy: He just hasn't hit the long range ball like he needs too. the Prich long gains (sans 1 in the 1st half) were all shorter throws that Prich went monster on. He had a nice one in the CSU game, but considering there wasn't a cSU player within 6 yards of TH or 15 yards of TClem, I hesitate to see progress.

2. Clutch Passing: He's been anti-clutch when passing the ball in press situations. Crushing our hopes of a comeback in the UH game. Going dead on the last drive of the Cal game. I remember that the OT fade pass to Prich on 3d down should have been picked off it was so horrifically underthrown. The CSU game where he was off on that throw on 3d down that should have gone for a LONG TD to Deehan. And although it worked out, that semi-duck he threw to Cefalo with 20 seconds left in the 1st half gets picked off against a team with better athletes in the secondary. However, I loved how he played in that last drive. That was solid, even though he made his best plays with his feet. Hope he can build on this performance and calm himself down in clutch situations.

Thoughts?

He was way off early the last two games, but got better after a few series. He was mis-firing (first 3 passes to Tony C were awful). I think he gets a bit hyped up and nerves are the issue.

Actually think he's been very accurate on the long ones. PRich had one right there. Deehan's was perhaps catchable, but only a few inches from perfect. McCullouch had a throw he just needed to get the other foot down first.... He's been ok on the deep ones I thought. I like the loft he puts on the sideline go-patterns.

It's the short passes he's been very bad at, but generally better after he settles down.

Rewatch the Cal game. He throws a ball on a rollout in the first half thats about 15 yards from where it needs to be when Prich was making a deep out. If he throws it right, its at least a 25 yard gain, possibly a TD.

His numbers are better than they would be normally. Team's are loading the box, and daring us to throw.

this is correct. the long ball, when he has to move around, is not a strength. he's much better if he has time, even on a rollout, to plant his feet.

The major improvement I saw in the CSU game, and I think going forward is his running. He looked incredibly tentative early on this season when I know he is an exceptional runner. There were a few CSU plays were he left the defenders grabbing for air when it looked like they had him and also some very confident runs down field. This will be a huge plus going forward causing the defense to probably have to keep a player locked on him.

It's funny you mention that, because I recall that csewe did have a spy watching Tyler on some of our plays. Didn't do 'em much good, tho.

that is because their best lb didn't play and they were spying hansen with an unathletic, slow lower tier player.

from here forward, the competition gets tougher.

Skelton's jock is still on the field

good post snow. go back and watch some tape, his timing is a bit off with the receiver and his placement is way off. He keeps putting the ball on the wrong shoulder of guys making the ball really tough to catch. He has had some very nice throws, but the nice ones are a pretty low percentage.

Isn't he at 7 TD's and 1 pick? But yes, I agree that he has gotten better every game, although I would argue that he overthrew probably 5 throws against Cal; and maybe 2 against CSU. He will need to hit receivers if they get behind OSU's defense. That is a must!

7 total 5 passing

7 td's and 1 pick is much better. His long throws need to be more accurate and needs to be better on 3rd down.

He'll be tested big time vs osu.

The thing is, he is SUPPOSED to be getting better with another year under his belt. i'm just not seeing the degree of improvement I'd like at this point in his college career. Of course, there's still time to make those improvements, so hopefully his accuracy gets better and he gets a tad more clutch. there are going to be games where we win or lose based on his play alone, and i want those games to fall our way! so let's go tyler!

No they made him pick it up 30 minutes after the game so they could get the field ready for the broncos game. They originally gave him an hour to pick it up so when they told him 30 he was PISSED

They threw him out of the stadium. Apparently jocks are considered obscene...

I'm glad to hear the positivity about Hansen. Haven't seen the game yet, but listened to the whole thing on the radio. My impression from there was that Hansen regressed, and probably played worse than even the Hawaii game. Looking forward to getting a replay recorded so I can watch for myself, but it's very encouraging to hear you guys say he looked better....

I expected more out of Hansen. He can still get back on track and have an excellent season, but as of now, I think he's underperformed. JMHO.

His completion % is definitely a dissapointment, but he's done better then I thought he would actually.

He played better than he did against Hawaii. Plus Richardson dropped almost every pass Tyler threw his way.

Figures. I post a 1000 word article or whatever, and AB spends more time discussing a small irrelevant factual error (7-1 is great, but only a little better than 5-1) than anything else

Maybe he got your post confused with one of Mountain Buff's

I've seen enough of Tyler to know that if he missed a WR by 15 yards it was not a poor throw but a mistake on where the WR was going. Could have been P-Rich or Tyler's fault....

He's been okay. We are still going to be at a decided disadvantage at the QB position come conference play.

I definitely got that part. That one doesn't worry me as much, because I really don't expect P=Rich to do that too often....
