If they were assured they could keep their Longhorn Network ?

Here's A Potential BIG 12 (16 team) Super Conference

Let's assume OU, OSU, MU, KU and A&M are gone-

Texass
Texass Tech
TCU
Baylor
Houston
SMU
KSU
Iowa St

West Va
Cincinatti
Louisville
S Florida
Central Florida
E Carolina
Memphis
S Mississippi

as much as it pains me to say... thats a decent conference...theyd be luck to have it

that's a dog**** conference, but it would definitely let texass do what they do. i think texass will think they are too superior for such a lineup, however.

From an athletic side of things there is no reason why they would not be league champion every year.

Assuming that Whorn does care about academic image, I can't see them being happy with this at all.

Ultimately I don't see ESPN/Fox or anyone else paying anything close to the $ that SEC, B1G, or PAC would get for first and second tier rights and the Whorn Network will not make up the difference.

End of the day the only thing that saves the Big12-2-1 is if OSU or TT can't get an invite with big brother to a super conference and the state politicians step in and force OU & UT to stay in the Big12.

you know what would be awesome? if the p12, b10, sec, and acc all got together and agreed that texass was so ****ed that none of them would take them. a gentlemen's agreement to shun the ****ers like they deserve...

that would be epic. ... never happen... but epic.

ESPN obviously thinks that Texas alone would generate a lot of TV sets. This conference would not demand the same kind of dollars that the 3-4 bigger conferences would but would none the less demand a lot of dollars. Given that a number of these schools don't have a lot of options I could very easily see something like this happening based on an idea of unequal revenue distribution. You get a conference contract, each school gets a base share but then you make a substantial payout based on appearances in the prime TV slots. In that scenario Texas would clean up followed by UWV with the others falling in line behind. Texas also gets to keep its LHN money meaning it makes a ton more than the rest of the conference but the presence of UT and WV means that the other schools don't fall into obscurity and oblivion.

Texas would love this, they could virtually make all conference decisions, be guaranteed of bowl eligibility in even their worst years, and still claim to be an equal member of a conference. When the question comes down to dollars and success on the field the academic issues will fade away completely.

Texas doesnt have the balls to stand on their own. Seems like they'd rather have other schools eating from their hand and tilting everything in conference to their favor. Call me crazy but it looks like they want no part of an even playing field. Either that or they believe they are above it. If they join the Pac on equal footing, Id be surprised. Maybe it wouldnt be announced publicly but they will try and get something extra, it's who they are. If they really believe all the bull**** they talk, go indy and prove it.

Would love to see them try. Not sure they get the kind of dollars that the Big 12-2 would get from TV, but again, it is Texas and they really would not care what the rest of the league would net as long as they got theirs. They could kill that conference in less than 5 years with unequal rev shares and jealousy that would eventually ensue.

I'm honestly not sure that Texass can imagine the idea of a world where it's possible for anybody to be on an even playing field with Texass...

Texas would ignore any loss of prestige that would come from playing in this conf. They're pretty good at convincing themselves anything they want. Most UT fans won't admit they treated any of their former Big 12 members unfairly.

Even if their conf was a joke, they'd still be a legend in thier own minds.

And they could use TT as an excuse for going to an "inferior" conference saying "We sacrificed to keep our traditional rivalries and support fellow state schools.

uTerus and Sorta Lame in the same conference; now there's an intriguing thot. The politics alone would be epic entertainment.

Edit: oops, wrong thread

I disagree. They need the LHN to gain some traction before they can go this route. That's looking less and less likely.

LHN still is not broadcasted by any of the major cable or satellite providers in Texas. They are up and running, but maybe 5% of residents have access to it. I have Time Warner and don't expect to see it anytime soon. They have been "negotiating" with the NFL network for 4 years and still don't offer it.

So Byu can do it but Texas cant? Find that hard to believe.

They can do it, but they would make more $$$ in a conference - so they prefer to join one if someone is willing to take them on their terms. Independent is the back-up plan if everything fails.

So Byu can do it but Texas cant? Find that hard to believe.

BYU is looking at it from an entirely different perspective. To start with BYU was getting a conference payout from the MWC, they left $1.5-$2 million a year on the table, UT is looking at leaving a conference payout of $20 million or more on the table, BYU figures that a contract with ESPN to make up that money isn't a hard thing to do.

The other part is that Texas football is about making money and maintaining political power for the university in Texas. BYU, even though they are not a state school has an unquestioned amount of political influence in Utah since the LDS church essentially makes the majority of political decisions about who will be in office and almost all of the top politicians go to BYU or support it even if they didn't go there. The LDS church looks upon BYU football as an extension of their missionary work, a means of putting the school and the church in front of the maximum number of people. Again the MWC restricted this function, not enhanced it. BYU playing Wyoming, CSU, New Mexico, didn't exactly put the school or church front and center in the media.

It remains to be seen if BYU can actually do it. They're gonna try, but it's not going to be easy. Plus, there's already a BYU network. It's been in place for 5+ years. I see it all the time when I'm scrolling through the channels.

I dont think Texas needed a network in the first place. If they went indy, somebody would give them a tv deal worth a boatload of money. I also dont see money as an issue for Texas going indy. They are just greedy and no amount is ever enough.

It's a couple issues. First - it's money. Texas is greedy, as you said. If they can have more money, they'll take it. Even if they can't have it, they'll try to figure out a way to coerce people out of it somehow. It's how they operate. Secondly, it's about scheduling. Football is one thing - 12 games a year is hard enough, but possible. The rest of their sports would be nearly impossible to fill out schedules for, though. And with all this bull**** they've pulled recently, there won't be a lot of schools lining up to put the whorns on their schedule - football or otherwise. Faced with the idea of getting about the same amount of money by being independent as opposed to being in a conference - they'll take the conference. Especially if it's a conference they can control, kinda like the Big 12, or the SWC. Of course they still haven't realized that they're the ones responsible for the demise of those two conferences. I doubt they ever will.
