Comparing talent w/ last year

If you go through the starting lineups, this year and last, how many postions are we improved at this year?
Without listing them out, I think the answer is few to none. I think this should be kept in mind when rating the job that JE and co. are doing

altho, I'm not sure how much that relates to ST play

Talent's about the same, but it got a lot younger.

We are replacing 5th year seniors with freshmen because there's so little in the junior class.

For example, on offense in 2012 there's a good chance that we won't start a single senior. Maybe Dannewitz.

On defense we'll start 4 seniors at the most in 2012 (Major, Rippy, Pericak and Perkins).

I like the direction the program is moving. A lot of good things, Looks like we have a bunch of FR and RFR that are playing or near the top of the Depth chart. We are moving inthe right direction, but one thing i don't like is the mental mistakes, all the personal fouls, holding, got to stop.

Spring 12 shouldbe interesting.

Key positional battles

QB- Connor Wood and Nick Hirschman

RB- Tony JOnes and Josh Ford

TE- Thornton and Kyle Slavin

We are young, but the team talent level is improving

QB: Hansen vs Cody; I'd say it's a push at most.
RB: Speedy v Speedy; got worse
WR: Worse, missing Scotty big time.
TE: Deehan looks a little better, depth still lacking. I think we got better by default because we didn't really lose anyone.
OL: Not sure, I think we're better at pass blocking, worse at run blocking?
DL: Better, but not by much.
LB: Worse, missing Beatty.
CB: Worse, we lost two NFL draft picks.
S: Don't know. I'd say they're better, but last year they at least sucked for a reason. This year Polk and Perkins have been pretty ****** and aren't young or inexperienced.
K: Way better
P: Better, especially if we don't ****ing rugby punt
Returns: KR and PR are both way worse, no idea what happened.
Coverage: I might be jaded because of today's game, but this is worse too somehow.

I don't see any way we're worse at LB. Hartigan started over Beatty last year, Major was hurt half the year, Webb's better than Nobriga, and Rippy is a lot better than Sipili was.

I guess. I just don't feel like we're getting good LB production outside of Rippy this year. Seems like Webb takes a lot of bad angles and gets caught in traffic easily. Major just doesn't seem to be around the ball.

I agree I think the LB's have been pretty decent as a group.

Major is in coverage a lot.

The issue still remains we have very few playmakers. We have a lot of guys I would consider "solid", but very few guys I would consider very good to great. That is an issue.

LBs are better, Rippy has been one of our best players. DEs are better, DTs are worse (where is Obi?)....

I am starting to think all the hype with Obi being a beast had alot more to do with how ****** our OL is then how good he is. I think he has been OK as a DT but he certainly hasn't been collapsing the pocket or anything.

I agree that the LB play is better. We look alot faster at LB and more athletic. I think that is the only position on our team that currently looks like a core that could be part of a Top 25 program.
DL play has been better this year too.
I didn't see the Cal game in the second half but Tyler Hansen has looked very average to me in every play that I have watched him. I would say he is a positive over Hawkins still because at least I haven't had to scream at my damn T.V. this year about batted down passes at the LOS.
Every other position has probably regressed this year.
Safety play has been so sad this year. I just don't understand what is wrong with Perkins and Polk. They really need the light bulb to turn on soon.

Uhh, so? I hope he isn't in coverage when teams run the ball. He hasn't been awful or something, I was just expecting him to be making more plays like Rippy has.

Rewatch the game. Major is often lined up across from a TE in the slot and then expected to cover like a cornerback. This responsibility often takes him far away from the running play. I assume that the other LBs are poor in coverage and that's why we seldom see Major rushing the QB.

Polk really sucks. There was one play where Miller was running wide to the left outside the tackle and Polk came flying in...had Miller for about a 5 yard loss, but Polk did some sort of spin-jump arm tackle twirl bull**** and totally whiffed. That kind of stuff is constant with him, and I haven't even mentioned the multiple hits-out-of-bounds crap.
Henderson, however, I couldn't be more impressed with. That guy's going to be awesome.

u nailed it. Major is being asked to play in space and cover. Also, so far this year every team has game planned to attack away from Major towards Hartigan and Webb. They will flip the TE to move Major. OSU only ran towards Major 2 - 3 times on Saturday. Against CSU, they never ran his way. Hard to get numbers when teams go away but he is doing his job and you can tell he is a leader on the field as he is always moving guys around pre snap.

Said it in another thread; but I think we're at a major disadvantage on ST because of the dearth of talent/experience beyond the starting 22 (and in some cases, in the starting 22). We'll get there, but I still think it's going to be a major headache this year.... again.
