UNM fires Mike Locksley

Admin probably felt tons of pressure for the football program to perform better to help the MWC in their bid for a BCS AQ bid, and now also to gain the notice of the Big 12 as a potential expansion candidate.

Mike Leach would be on my shortlist if I were the Lobos trying to "send the message" about being serious in football. That would certainly help build juice for a UNM-TTech rivalry.

A 19 year old was arrested for DWI pregame yesterday driving an SUV registered to Locksley. Told police he was a "recruit from Chicago". Then they go out and lose to Sam Houston State..

Apparently a prospective recruit got pulled over for a DWI yesterday, driving a car registered to Locksley.

I'm stunned that he wasn't fired after last year, honestly...

I believe he was kept around because UNM (and the state ) is broke and couldn't justify buying out his contract.

The incident with the recruit is unfortunate for the school, however it might give the administration some leverage in reducing the amount of a buyout or even eliminating any payment if Locksley was fired for cause.

Makes sense. Gives UNM the ability to fire with cause so they don't have to pay him his contract.

As some of you have said Locksley hadn't been fired before because the program and the school is broke. I haven't looked at the news reports but I'm guessing that they will simply promote an assistant to finish the year at little or no additional money. They will try to get out of the remaining contract. The SUV part is clearly an NCAA violation, if the alcohol had anything to do with Locksley then that would be a criminal issue which may give them a solid grounds for termination without paying off, this also may be the end of Locksleys career as a HC at any level and will make him poison as an assistant for a while.

If he is giving alcohol to a 19 year old recruit along with a car his career should be over regardless of how many games he has won or lost.

If the financial situation is as has been speculated we will not see Mike Leach there. He's not unblemished but he can be choosy when he decides to return to coaching.

Agree, Leach is smart enough to know that even if they came up with money to pay him the total program budget isn't competitive. Leach can see that this wouldn't be a smart career move since it will be hard to compete there.

Locksley's career as a head coach was done with his performance at UNM, but until this incident he was still looked at as a top candidate for anyone as a DB coach. Now, he's going to be hard for anyone to hire.

I understand the recruit was on a beer run in Locksley's car. Someone grabbed a pic:
