Special Teams Changes to Personnel coming

Espy to PR
Lockridge and Jaffee returning kicks
Money in at kickoff (that's right bitches, new found year of eligibility)

article on rivals implies they are going to play their starters on special teams. the non-starters aren't athletic enough to be properly positioned on st to either cover or block is the net-net of the changes. the risk is we don't have enough athletes and if a starter goes down while playing st, at several positions, we will be hosed.

The bigger news is the traveling squad will be 56-58 players.

yep. i left that part out. that means the staff has concluded they have 15 or so guys that they don't think can play at this level or, at a minimum, aren't ready to play at this level.

but, nevertheless, our genius fanbase thinks the rebuilding project is taking too long, four games into it, including a visit to a place where they lost like 3 home games in the past 5 years.

It is going to be interesting to see how the offseason attrition shakes out because Embo clearly does not trust several players. Also think we might be looking at 3-4 Jucos in the 2012 class, a lot by our standards.

More I think about this, the more I think the recent CU tradition of going out the day and night before away games finally got busted by someone. Even if it is just a motivational ploy, I can't believe we are doing this. This is gonna leave us a lot thinner and could bite us in the ass. In my mind, this is the move of a supremely pissed off man who has decided to do things the NFL way.

Too bad we are still playing college ball. Hope this doesn't set us back further. Lot of teams out there do more with less.

So we snuck a few OSU players on our plane to bring back? Nice.

they might match that total this season alone. They have Michigan state this week, then wisco coming and Penn state, those could all be losses.

Yep. We need to find some guys who can come in and immediately help fill some holes.

I like some of our young guys, but I'd really rather not play freshmen on the OL and at DT. I wouldn't mind a veteran TE either.

Completely disagree. This is the move of a completely pissed off man that will not play players who have proven that they can't get it done. This is the right thing to do if you're going to set a standard. He can't bend that standard.

Couple reasons I said that:
1) This is what NFL coaches do as a matter of course. I believe their gameday rosters are 54 iirc. But those are pro's, not kids.
2) The "standard setting" and starters only on special teams deal is is a motivational ploy I remember a Giant's coach doing a few years back right before their superbowl run. So it is an NFL tactic.

And not really sure why setting standards is completely against the NFL way

ahem :wink2:
. I had a team meeting. I think you can travel 70. I figure we’re at the point where we’re going to have to go with 58, maybe 56 guys and go. It’s going to have to be like it is in the (National Football) League, some guys are going to have to be able to go. We’re going to have to cross-train some guys for a couple of different things, and then you go with it.”

Getting a JUCO transfer at both TE and DT would be good. Adding an athletic DB would provide depth in the secondary and help on special teams too. You get two or three impact players (not easy mind you) that can help right away at those positions and it would be a big boost.

Frank Beamer did this at VT when he was building them up. Hope we have the same result.

I guess we are seeing it in the same way....I just wouldn't term this as being an "NFL" move. But, I don't disagree with the move in the least. As the head coach of a team in which you're trying to build and change the culture, I don't believe that you can decide to put a product on the field that isn't of the caliber that you're demanding, simply because of a risk or concern of potential injuries. In the long run, I think you hurt your team much more in the long run by showing that you'll accept subpar play/effort.

100% agree. I've been saying not nice things for years regarding the effort of a certain group of players. It is a disease, and HaLk brought it here. Once you compromise your standards, it is a swift spiral to mediocrity or worse..

I'd take being one quarter as successful as VT on special teams. That's a hard-nosed, blue collar attitude that we are so far from matching it's not even funny. The whole culture of VT is like that

JUCOs huh? I don't disagree that this is the best and really only option, but JUCOs never make it into CU. I mean it has happened for a few guys, but depending on JUCOs to save us next year has proven not to work here at CU. If it is the only real option though, you gotta do what you gotta do.

Wrong.

How attractive does CU look to JUCO's right now is the question. Many players want to start but it will be a tough sell when we have set ourselves up as a 4 and 5 win program for the past 5 years. JUCO's don't want to come into a place and lose they want to go to a place to start and win. I think we are going to have a tough time when alot of other places dip into the JUCO's to get starters as well. I agree with a previous poster when he said we could use a TE, OL, and DB from the ranks. I like or DL & LB's and I think they are going to be a strength for our program next year. Any more news on Doug Rippy's brother? The season he is having for us is great and I hope he is passing that along to his brother. I want him hear in CU.

I think CU looks pretty good to JUCOs right now. I think more than anything, JUCOs want to start. I think a JUCOs biggest fear would be to go from being a hot shot starter on the JUCO scene to riding bench behind some highly recrtuited, 4 start redshirt freshman.
