CU DEFENSE- time to go back to the 4-3?

The 3-4 isn't working. No pressure unless cu blitzes 8 guys. Where is duribe? Obi?

CU isn't big enough or talented enough up front to run a 3-4. Our LB's other than rippy seem invisible.

The secondary is what it is, they hardly have anyone left.

I think the 4-3 would be better for next season, you?

No. We just played the best player in the country. Gotta get the players that fit the system in here first.

Wouldn't change the defensive scheme next year based on our performance this year. Might need to look at making some adjustments the next few games though.

Syko, good point. I just think Embree wants to go to a 3-4 regardless of what we have now and wants CU to take our hits the next few years (kind of like our O). Looking at at DL recruiting (which I know you love and so should everyone else) it seems like we are moving toward that true 3-4 defense. I see we are on a few nose guards (fat ****s) that are true 3-4 D-Lineman/nose guards. After next year/end of year we are still pulling the same stunts as this year and no nose guards (fat ****s) I will be with you.

Most of the time we are in 43 defense. Woodson Greer looked good today. Looks like our LB core is going to be our strenght for years to come.

What has been a strength this season? Richardson, Speedy, or the guy cheerleader that does alot of flips?

D isn't the problem... If they had an O that could keep them off the field for any length of time, or the ability to make the opponent drive 70-80 yards for a score instead of 40-50, this D would be far better than anyone is giving them credit for. Sure the secondary is weak but the best way to "fix" this D is to get some offensive talent that can get at least one more first down than what we are currently getting.

For a 3-4 to work the defensive line has to be able to hold up the OL and make sure the OL doesn't get to the LB's and block them. We aren't good enough up front to do that.

This is more of a personnel issue than a scheme issue.

The LBs disappear for large stretches of games. Rippy is the only one that plays with any sort of consistency.

By "large stretches" you mean 57 of 60 minutes correct? Hartigan, major have been irrelevant in most game, cabral is a good LB coach so what's going on there?

What we run is a hybrid, most of thetime it is 43. A true 34 would look like

NT-Obi
DE- Cunnigham
DE- Pericak
OLB- Hartigan
ILB-Rippy
ILB-Major
OLB-Uzo Diribe

or

NT- Zaheer Webb
DE- Nembot
DE- Solis
OLB-Uzo Diribe
ILB- Greer
ILB- Daigh
OLB- Juda Parker

So you think he's lost his magic or is the talent way down at the position? I mean he doesn't really have anyone close to, Beikert,Johnson, mcghee, williams, johnson, dizon, etc...

The depth isn't there at the LB position. Some nice guys but we used to have six or seven good LBs on the roster back in the day. We have maybe one now.

fwiw, Rippy has looked good to me. I also think Greer could be really good. Too early to call, but I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes a player. Our D definitely has deficiencies, but the running game is the team's biggest weakness imho. The D is on the field for too long. Hate to write this season off, but I'm almost certain we'll have a vastly improved running game next year. We'll miss Speedy, but the O-line will be better. I'm looking forward to seeing Nembot and Asiata on the line together. T Jones, J Ford, Payne and hopefully W Brown should make for a solid running game.

Dunno. You just can't play defense with the secondary we are fielding at the moment.

**** the 3-4 and the 4-3. It's time to go to a 6-5 for the rest of the season....

We could play a 6-5-4 and not get penetration or coverage. We are a couple of good recruiting classes away from implementing Embree's designs on both sides of the ball, and the progress toward those ends is unclear so far.

This is going back to the Greg Brown thread. Put Brown and Cabral on the OU staff and they do not make the players worse than they are now. They are doing what they can with the remains of a Dan Hawkins recruiting class and true freshmen while a new head coach begins the metamorphosis of a former Ron Collins 4-3 defense to a 3-4. I used to think "patience" meant 4 or 5 games but clearly it's going to take a couple of years and players who are on board and not looking to get out at the first sign of failure. I haven't seen a sign of putting this season's struggles on the coaches outside of special teams.
