If we could hire Mike Hankwitz, should we?

I guess he's the DC at Northwestern now. He's been a fantastic DC wherever he's gone. While I have no idea what's going on at Northwestern currently, I do wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to try to get him back here.

Thoughts?

I was thinking about Hank just the other day and it seemed to me the last really dominant defense the Buffs had was with him at the helm.

I think Hank left CU a little bitter after he wasn't hired as HC in 05. I doubt he'd come back.

Sigh...

My concern with him is that he'd be similar to Brown in that he'd be a good coach, but poor recruiter. He doesn't have the most gregarious personality.

If I remember correctly, NW fans are saying his defense is holding them back. I haven't been by their boards for a while though.

I say we fire GB and hire Hank. I appoint Jimmy to make the change.

The thing with Hank is that he's never been offered a HC position anywhere to my knowledge. It's hard to hold that against CU when nobody else was willing to take that risk, either.

It's hard to sit here and watch this defense. We're awful. Truly terrible. And we've been awful since the beginning of the year, contrary to popular belief. Even at Hawaii, we were terrible.

hank had some awesome d's at CU. he has proved his value at other schools. i would have liked to see him stick around years ago. i think that was one of hawkins major mistakes... letting hank go.

now, would he be able to come in a right this ship? i dunno. but, i admit. i am biased. i am in the camp of... it does not matter who coaches this group... they are devoid speed, talent, experinece and then toss in the injuries and suspensions... i just dont think there is much anyone can do right now.

we have what we have. in terms of coaching and talent. now, three years from now, if we have seen a signifigant influx of talent into the ranks of the D, and we are seeing similar results.... yeah! that is coaching. and we need a new DC.

would hank still be around and interested then? who knows? dude is kinda getting old. i think.

i do love the guy! i would not be opposed to giving him another shot at CU. personally, i cant really argue with his results here compared to what else we have had.

I'm not trying to take anything away from Hankwitz. He's done great things here in Boulder. I have a ton of respect for him. I'm just not sure he's the answer we need. I'd prefer a younger DC.

I don't know that I would put him in the fantastic category. He was fired at Wisconsin after two years -

Hankwitz is a solid DC but not spectacular. If he was here this year I doubt the results would be much better.

I can't see Embree getting rid of Brown after just one season, particularly with all the injuries. I expect the defense to be significantly better next year, especially if Rippy comes back strong. That said, I'm very concered about the D-line. We haven't been good this year on the line and we'll lose Obi, Hartigan and, I think, Cunningham. Excluding any incoming freshmen, we'll have very little depth.

Well, if Embree learned anything under Shanny hopefully it wasn't to fire your DC every single year. I mean every few years ok, but not EVERY year. What about Cabral as DC? I thought he was in line for it last year anyway after the HC was announced. Is there any backstory why that didnt happen anyway?

I like Hankwitz and while he would be an improvement over Greg Brown (hell Lady Gaga, Britney Spears or Rihanna could do a better job as DC than Brown) I think we need to find new blood. Need to find a young position coach at a top school now that has the chops to be a DC.

You guys might want to check out the defenses at NW before getting out the pitchforks for GB. Maybe he has a lack of talent there, but the points they give up are um, CU level. Seems like he has trouble defending spread teams. Might be a case of the game passing the old feller by.

I will take him over Brown right now, tommorow.

Yes, we know.

Let's assume that we know exactly where you stand on the two topics on which you frequently post. You hate Greg Brown as a DC and want him gone. You're optimistic about our young talent.

Those messages are loud clear, so it's not really necessary to repeat them.

If your message changes, for instance you reach a different conclusion, or if you have something to add on a different topic, or maybe you've got something funny to share, you should chime in.

But otherwise, we already know how you feel. Your posts on the matter are not value added.

I am of the party that it is a bit too early to be judging anyone on this coaching staff. They don't have anything to work with right now and won't for the next few years. Right now the only red flag about our staff is the penalties. Lots of holding penalties which seems to point at our OL being over matched but there have been a fair amount of undisciplined style penalties too. They show Embree on the sidelines and he tries to light a fire under those guys and coach em up but there is only so much he can do with his particular hand he was dealt. Gotta give these guys at least a couple years before we start talking about firing anyone.

Buffs need to stop looking BACK and start looking FORWARD.

There are tons of young coaches out there. CU needs to stop with the retreads.

I just want someone to tell me what coach in the history of football would have our D playing any better than it is now using the same talent that we put on the field against ASU, Oregon, and Washington.

The defense is awful. Just pathetic. Who do you blame? The DC should get a lot of the blame. The HC for hiring said DC.

All I know is this team in general is worse than last year's D2 team. I'm not calling for anyone to be fired, but I am definitely scared for the future. I expected these coaches to at least make our kids competitive and improve the effort on the field. The fact that we have regressed really scares me.

For the record I was very much an advocate of this coaching staff when they were hired, and I still am. But if I am being honest with everyone, I now have a lot of doubt.

I'm starting to think that may not be such a bad thing. They have been absolutely abused this year.

All part of the college football game. you lose some good every year and you lose some bad every year. I think we have a lot of bad to lose this year.
