Girls dominated 78-40. Hopefully this is more a reflection on our talent and readiness rather than Regis's lack there of. Only an exhibition match so not technically our first win.

CU vs Regis (WBB)

Hey! It's women, not girls! 
I watched online. Typical exhibition game--some good things, some not so good things. Jeffrey played a good all around game. Freshmen got plenty of playing time--red shirt got in at the end. It's a beginning as every new season is. Yes, there are things to work on--still too many turnovers, need to get better at free throw line. Hargis is still getting better. She looks nothing like the player she was a year ago.

- Too many turnovers... some were on plays where the Buffs tried to get too fancy or got a bit lazy on the pass. Regis players were quick to take advantage.
- All the available scholarship freshmen got lots of playing time (please get healed up Arielle) so there were some obvious nerves on display (Lexy Kresl missing her first shot attempts and free throw attempts, for example) and freshman mistakes (ex. shot block attempt by Reese resulting in foul.... the game is a lot faster at this level, Jen, but keep working on it)
- Lexy Kresl will be a marked woman. Once she got into the flow, give her a bit of room and the ball and thats Lexy Kresl with a Colorado 1-2-3. Other teams defenses will be on her big time. We'll see how she handles it but that should help someone else get free.
- Ashley Wilson got the start. Hopefully she stays healthy because she, like her sister, is one tough player. A couple of nifty feeds from sister to sister resulting in layups.
- Rachel Hargis has started doing what I was pleading for her to do all last season..... when she catches the ball near the basekt, just turn and shoot. Too often last year she'd bring the ball down, take a couple dribbles and get in trouble. Well, she's making progress. She did quite a few 'turn and shoot' plays today ... unfortunately the arc on her shot was too flat and most of the shots didn't fall. But thats correctable. She has definitely developed since last season.
- Need some work on positioning ...another teaching moment for the freshmen (mostly) when the coaches review the game film. On one play, Julie Seabrook had the ball near the CU basket (I think she had gotten a rebound) but was swarmed by the Regis defenders. The only open space was to Julie's left (the side away from the benches) but none of her teammates got over there to get into her line of sight and give her an outlet for the ball. Ended up in a turnover.
- Chucky .... what else to say that gal is a baller. Some nifty moves But even she showed some sloppy / lazy patches ... like not coming towards the ball on a slow outlet pass to her that ended up being stolen by an alert Regis player. It's hard to stay totally focused when you are up as much as the Buffs were so the staff will have plenty of teaching moments for this weeks practices.
All in all, a good exhibition win. Regis has only two players 6' or more (one at 6', one at 6'1") so the Buffs had a height advantage most of the time. But Regis players didn't roll over and give up. They are all good free throw shooters and they have some good shooters if they get the space they need to work in. Also, especially to start the second half, Regis really cranked up the defense and made it much harder on the Buffs. Fortunately the Buffs figured out what they needed to do.

Why play Regis? Who is up next.....Marycrest?
Regis was an exhibition game against a local DII school. Most teams are playing exhibition games against DII schools in recent seasons. The WBB team has already played one or more closed scrimmages with D1 teams, as has the men's team. The exhibition game was a chance to play a full game, under game conditions, which scrimmages usually are not. So the players, especially the new freshmen who will be counted on to be contributing early, got an opportunity to experience game conditions in a game that doesn't count in the W-L record. I don't see any down side to it. I think this is definitely better than the 'travelling teams' that used to be the opponents in exhibition games.
As for who is up next, I'll take that as a serious question, although I doubt you meant it to be. Up next is a WBB / MBB double header on Friday evening to open the regular season with the women playing University of Northern Arizona followed by the men playing Fort Lewis.

Was not trying to be a complete smart ass.....just was thinking that playing Regis is less than productive. Anybody pick up on the Marycrest reference?
Yep. @cubuffs was tweeting score updates throughout. It also sounded like our defense was forcing a lot of turnovers. Too bad Arielle has the back spasms. I would have liked to get a report on her.
I picked up on it, but now that Regis High School admits females, I'm not even sure that MaryCrest is still in operation.

Heh - wow. I never knew about that. I remember being "recruited" to go to school at Regis. All the boys in my 8th grade class went down there and got the tour of the place. The girls all went over to Marycrest to get the same thing. After 5 years of Catholic school education, I wanted absolutely NOTHING to do with Regis. A couple boys from my class went to Regis, but not a single girl went to Marycrest.

I had a very good friend int he neighborhood who went to Marycrest. She hated it. Straight A student 3 sport letter winner and hated it.
