Men's Basketball is allowed 13 scholarship players on the roster.

Our 2012 roster is shaping up as follows:

Seniors: None
Juniors: Adams, Harris-Tunks, Roberson, Sharpe
Sophomores: Booker, Cain (assuming he doesn't RS), Dinwiddie, Mills (assuming he does RS)
Freshmen: Gordon, Jenkins, Johnson, Scott

That allows for 1 scholarship in 2013 if we don't sign a 5th guy to the 2012 class. An additional scholarship could open up through attrition. Injuries and transfers happen. Roberson could declare for the NBA draft after his junior year.

There are a number of exciting 2013 prospects that CU is in good position to sign if we can keep the momentum going this season.

So, assuming we have 1 now and 1 that will open up for 2013, how should Tad play this?

if you can get Wallace as the last scholarship player than you sign him, otherwise you bank it. And does Cain really have a scholarship still?

I think you have to look at this as two options

1. Play to get a single year as good as possilble, as in 4 years you will have a senior heavy class that should be able to dominate.
2. Play to have balanced sucess

I think they both have their positives, a balanced sucess, everyone will know your name, and not as a one and done type team, but on the other side, loading up classes will allow you to load up with some good talent with the selling point that a freshman can play from day one.

In the end, I would say get the best 3-4 year talent that you feel you can get. I am not a fan of the one and done 5 star recruits, yes they are talented, but thats not how you make a sucessful program, just a flashy program

Not yet. I'm making assumptions.

I'd much rather they bank it at this point. Unless they can get a top 75 recruit to pull the trigger at this stage (unlikely), the scholly does us more good next year.

I like the idea that if Jenkins or Gordon redshirted we'd be looking at 3 or 4 guys in every class (assuming we banked the scholarship).

I say bank it unless a very good recruit comes into the picture. I don't hold myself to a top 75 since we all know there are players like Burks out there.

Attrition such as the NBA, transfer, or a situation like Cain deciding not to play or being deemed academically ineligible could throw a brick into this idea though.

Bank it unless we get a top 75 or 50 guy to commit.

If Tad can get a great player that would help the team, then use it. Otherwise, bank it.

You roll the dice if you can get an impact player, otherwise you bank it.

:yeahthat: These people are all correct.

I say you have to use up your scholarships (even though I voted to the contrary as I didn't give it much thought at first). Bring in an unknown prospect if you have to, but don't waste one good scholarship. These scholarships can be given on a year-to-year basis, right? As long as the prospect is informed that the scholarship is a one year deal only and that he will have to excel to have it extended. Alternatively, you can always give it to an existing non-scholly player (Chen?) as reward for their effort.

Scholarships are one-year, but it's bad form to pull one for reasons other than discipline. Doing so would give other programs an opportunity to effectively negative-recruit against us.

I do agree that if we decide to bank it and have one open this season and next, that it would make sense to put Chen on scholarship for his remaining two seasons as a Buff.

Whatever Tad thinks is best (the thought of having this discussion anytime in the past is laughable). My guess is unless a 'star' is available he banks both for 2013 for balance.

I say use it if there is a prospect you want.... you never know what is going to happen with these kids, and there is a high probability that there will be attrition over time.

It ain't over yet. We have the spring signing period/ Who knows what will happen with some of the guys who are holding out to sign later ... or even the rosters of schools that they are in favor of possibly not having room for them. We have has some great "late gets" like Roberson and even Donnie Boyce in the past. So let's sit tight and see how things develop. I trust Boyle and Co to make the smartest move.

Wait to see if a kid has a good year and kind of comes out of no where, but with signing day so close you have to at least wait until the spring. But, I am guessing they will keep it and use it later
