I love EB, but come on man. It does not take a genius to figure out that guys like Adrian Peterson, Maurice Jones-Drew, and Brian Calhoun can play a bit. Those are the types of guys EB has gotten in the past and what we need to be getting going forward. Apparently EB would agree because most of the RB offers this year are the cream of the crop.
Nik had exactly right earlier in this thread, just getting guys to sign is not good enough. Getting the guys we want is the key. So far that is not happening for the most part. I know you think star rankings are complete crap, but pay attention to the guys the coaches offer early. Most of them are pretty highly rated.
EB was involved in the recruiting of Brian Calhoun, Hugh Charles, Marcus Houston, Chris Brown, Bobby Purify and now hopefully Wes Brown and Daviene Payne. Can't attack EB record in RB recruiting.
Let's deal in reality for just a moment. Our last coach won 1 game for every 2 he lost, we were embarrased on national TV multiple times, our prior coach resigned after being in the national news for a (bogus) scandal. CU hasn't been relevant on the national scene since most of these recruits were 11 years old or younger.
We don't have a list of 4* and 5* recruits just waiting for us to offer like Texas, Florida, and U$C. We are going to have to work harder and yes get a little lucky to get back where we want to be.
We have two choices. One is to go the route of Miami and use hookers and blow or just do like they do at some other places and spread a lot of money around when nobody is looking. That isn't going to work because we can't afford the hit when we get caught and we aren't one of the favored few that the NCAA will just slap on the wrist and say don't do it again with a wink.
The other option is to work hard and patiently to rebuild the program from the foundation up. Work on every 4* and 5* we can get to listen and get some to come, try to fill the class remainding as much as possible with quality 3* talent that can be a solid core to the program. This will still mean that we have to find and develop some 2* guys who for various reasons get overlooked.
Can you make a living recruiting 2* players? No, but if you are selective and work hard to develop the right ones you can get some guys who will be building blocks for your program. Speedy wouldn't start at a lot of schools, some wouldn't even let him see the field. That said he has proven that with some blocking he can compete against anyone. Same for guys like Hartigan, like Bahktiari, like Webb who are all key parts of our team who were not prime targets for the top ten schools.
This is were the magic has to happen. Somehow Embree and Co. have to make the right decisions and influence the right guys to come here and then build something with them. When we win 6-7 games in a season and go to a lower end bowl then it gets a little easier to get higher profile recruits to listen to you, win 9-10 and win a few national TV games on the way to a better bowl and suddenly you have some guys waiting for and wanting your offers, do that consistently with a few years of competing for BCS bowls and then we can start complaining about how the coaches aren't getting what they should out of the high profile guys still on the bench.
We all love the Buffs and think that every recruit should want to come here. Fact is that great weather, a high quality education, and the flatirons over Boulder aren't enough. Recruits want to be able to expect to win and that we have to build before we can complain about recruiting 2* and 3* guys.
Losing is frustrating, I get it. But are some of you seriously suggesting that EB can't recruit? It's easy for us as Buffs fans to think of a million good reasons to play in Boulder, but honestly, why would a blue chip talent choose CU at this point? We haven't been a national force since the early nineties! I mean, Barnett and Slick Rick had a couple good years, but nothing resembling consistency. I don't consider winning the Big 12 North and getting blown out in the championship game something to write home about.
Not only that, but the last two blue chip RBs that came here (Marcus Houston and D Scott) didn't exactly find success. I'm sure there are plenty of reasons for that, but don't think that's not something recruiters from other schools are mentioning.
Also, the last recruiting cycle was a whirlwind, particularly for EB who still had commitments with the Vikings, and this cycle isn't close to being over. Let's let things play out.
EB just has to get Wes Brown and then we can stop having these conversations and go back to talking about DL and OL recruiting. Or kickers.
Can we be the only FBS team in the country with 5 kickers on scholly?
We have three guys on scholly who should have the leg to do the job. Somehow one of them needs to figure it out.
Oliver is the shortest of the three but the most consistent, Castor is just unexplainable, strong leg but doesn't have a clue where it's going. Grossnickle may have the strongest leg and the weakest head of the bunch. Ideally Oliver stays as our placement guy, O'neal continues to develop as our punter, and Gross figures it out doing KO's and giving us a solid backup to the other two. I'm not a believer in cutting a guy but maybe someon councils Castor out of the program. On the other hand O'neil has a big leg as well, maybe in the offseason he becomes our KO guy as well.
He ended up at csewe

I guess we'll find out if he's for real soon enough...
