Thread: CU not on AFA basketball schedule.

CU not on AFA basketball schedule.

Air Force men's basketball coach Jeff Reynolds said Tuesday his team's 2009-10 nonconference schedule is close to completion.
Reynolds declined to reveal any opponents because "we don't have any contracts back." But he confirmed one team that won't be on the schedule — Colorado.

"I've had some dialogue with (CU) coach (Jeff) Bzdelik about it," Reynolds said. "Nothing's really changed from our standpoint, and that's pretty much where it is."

Reynolds, a former Bzdelik assistant, said he didn't want to play a Bzdelik-coached team again (the teams met in 2007) because they are best friends.

Air Force athletic director Hans Mueh told The Gazette in late April that he wanted to see the Falcons play CU and the University of Denver. Reynolds said Tuesday he hasn't spoken with Mueh about it but "I'd be open to talking to him — he's my boss."

I think it would be cool if we could host a "Colorado Classic" every year similar to the annual Philadelphia Big 5 Tourney (Nova, St. Joe's, Temple, Penn & LaSalle). Either at the CEC or Pepsi. Whatever would get Coloradans enthusiastic about basketball is a win for CU. I'd definitely go if CU, CSU, AFA, DU & UNC played a round robin every year.

Something like that needs to happen. The area schools need something to get people excited because it just is not happening right now. I think the Pepsi Center would be the best venue (although CEC or Magness are options as well).

it's a nice gym. i think attendance-wise (cap. about 7500 for hoops i think) that would be a good place to start such a round-robin or even just a rotating annual double header of CU, CSU, AFA, and DU. as close to a full gym would be optimal for growing "atmosphere" and the most centrally located. then, after it catches on like wildfire and the Front Range is insane for local college hoops...which is inevitable....move it to Pepsi Center.

not a great place to see a concert though. sound is crappy.

They did the Rocky Mtn Classic at Pepsi a few years back & it was a total bust. I don't think any of the schools did a good job of getting their fan bases interested in attending but (as much as I hate to say it), they'd have to bring a big name in to really garner interest from your average college b-ball fan. Otherwise, they'll just go to the closest sports bar & watch the top teams compete.

I saw a couple high school games there back when it first opened. Pretty good venue IMO. As Mick says, it might be the most ideal place because a venue close to sold out is better than the Pepsi center being 1/3 full.

knowing nothing about the specifics of DU's AD, i was working at DU in academic year 06-07 and am down there every couple months or so....they are really trying to grow sports as part of their "identity" as a school and i think they'd host something like that in a minute just to be involved with the other d-1 programs in the state on equal footing. too bad there isn't some other alternative for them than the Sun Belt. for travel and other things, it's not a good fit. that's got to be an obstacle. however, Joe Scott was a great (even lucky) hire for them.

I'd bet on DU being the next team in the area making the dance. Seeing how they progressed last season in conference play with how young they were they could make it next season.

They need a football team. They could play the likes of Mines, CSU-Pueblo, Mesa, etc. I guess back in the day, CU and DU used to have some epic football games.

DU's problem is that their #1 program is hockey. Their biggest rivals are schools like CC and Minnesota. Schools that they aren't going to be in a conference to play in basketball or football. What you're suggesting for football would be Division II, but they've already moved to D-1 for basketball. The most logical conference for their basketball program really might be the Big Sky conference with UNC. But I think they have their sights set higher than the Big Sky, which is why they went with the Sun Belt. But they'll never really have any natural rivals in that conference... They've kind of put themselves in a tough spot, honestly....

Hoops wise the Mountain West would make the most sense. But pretty sure you'd need football for that to be possible.
