I have been as frustrated as everyone else re: Buff's performance last week. This is in no way an indication of my support for or against Coach Hawkins...just food for thought. IMO after listening to his press conference it is apparent that he is a stats guy. For instance it his belief that if his team can make more positive plays than the other team he will win (this is a no brainer). As evidence he mentioned a dropped 3rd down pass and an illegal formation penalty that nullified positive plays. Additionally he mentioned a deflected pass that resulted in an interception. Realistically, if these particular plays did not occur the way they did the outcome may have been different. Now that says nothing about his game day coaching ability eg calling a ****ty lateral running play on 4th and one etc. All I am saying is that had the ball bounced a little differently, CU could have won the game.
I guess all I am trying to say is that Hawkins is more of a stats guy that a game day Xs and Os coach.
Bottom line....Stats guys never end up more than one standard deviation from the mean and that results in no Big XII championship games and no BCS title games.
Just about every football game ever played is decided by 5-6 plays. Unfortunately for the Buffs on Sunday those plays were made by the Rams.
The DL is the cause of our problems. We couldn't stop the run and we couldn't stop the pass given a lack of pass rush; we had to bring the house to get to their QB and we put all of our corners on an island. Every one of their big passes was on a go route. We got outcoached....BAD.
The point isnt to beat teams like CSU, Montana State, Eastern Washington, Toledo, Wyoming, and ISU, the point is to beat them in convincing style with dominant play. Then when you play the Big12 schedule, you have plenty of momentum after a few shutouts and winning by 40-50 pts that you can then roll with that and sneak one past a top 10 team every now and then and still beat most of the other teams.
Screw the stats!! Scoreboard!! This isn't intramurals!

Did Hawkins happen to mention that CSU's wide receiver dropped a sure touchdown catch on a play that he would normally make 95% of the time?
Did Hawkins happen to mention that a CSU defender dropped a sure pick-6 interception from Cody on the sideline?
Did Hawkins happen to mention that if it weren't for Fairchild showing sportsmanship and mercy they would have scored another touchdown at the end of the game?
We can talk and talk about our missed opportunities, but if I'm Coach Fairchild I'm screaming at my team for poor execution and making a game close that we should have won by more than 20.

Of course. Because based on the respective talent levels, we should win that game by 40 points. To put it in high school terms, this was a 5A school with middling talent for its class losing to a 3A school with middling talent for its class. It's not easy for a coaching staff to screw up badly enough to lose that game.
