We've got a real shot here.

It was an interview with the Rivals CSU guy and McClure was talking about how he and his dad like the state. He then volunteered the following:

"CU has (defensive coach Ashley) Ambrose was in the NFL for 13 years and they know what they are doing too."

It is always a great sign when a prospect brings up CU without being asked or prompted. Keep your fingers crossed.

I want Ashley Ambrose to be here for a long time. This kid looks like the real thing talentwise and attitudewise. Despite our problems on D last year the DBs did well, even when they had to make changes in the lineup inseason. I saw individual players getting noticably better over the season. Ambrose knows what it takes to play DB at a very high level and seems to be able to teach it. A kid like this is good now, Ambrose could make him much better.

Come to Boulder Stefan, you will get a great education in a great place to live with a position coach who is very well liked and respected.

McClure also made the Cali High Top 25 list on Monday:

    #21 Stefan McClure

    School: Vista
Position: Cornerback/Wide Receiver (better as a CB)
    Height: 5’10
    Weight: 175 pounds
    Schools Considering: UCLA, Washington, Colorado

In high school, you often see guys with all the tools but none of the actual football skills that make a player great. For example, a guy may be a physical specimen but rarely makes plays on the field. Or maybe a guy is incredibly gifted athletically but shies away from contact, doesn’t run crisp routes, doesn’t know his coverage. Stefan McClure not only has the physical gifts of a great high school player, he has some of the best instincts and football savvy of any player in Cali.

McClure plays both sides of the ball as a wide receiver and cornerback. Cornerback is definitely McClure’s strongest position but he isn’t too shabby of a wideout either.

As a wideout McClure is adept at finding space in the defense and then making plays once the ball is in his hands. He is extremely quick out of cuts and has breakaway speed. He goes for the home-run play a little often but everytime he has the ball he is a threat to bust through the defense for a touchdown.

As a corner, McClure can lockdown his man on almost every play. He has incredible instincts and is very quick to respond to what a receiver is doing. Guys going against him have lots of trouble finding space and almost never beat him deep. His incredible instincts have also made him a very good tackler. He breaks hard at the ball and makes a shocking of tackles at the line of scrimmage, especially when you consider the fact he’s a cornerback. McClure’s big play ability from the offensive end transfers over to the defensive end where he goes into playmaker mood if he gets an interception or recovers a fumble.

We need this kid. He would be a tremendous help. We desperately need playmakers. I'd like to see him grow another two inches, but aside from that, he's obviously got all the tools.

We made his top 8, according to a new Scout interview. It would be huge if we could beat Cal this week, since they're also in the mix for him and actually in better position right now.

UCLA and Washington lead. Washington, Oregon and Cal are definitely getting official visits. UCLA won't since it's just down the street for him.

For his final 2 visits McClure is deciding among COLORADO, Oregon State, Miami and Florida. Of those, only Florida hasn't offered.

He seems like the type of kid that will take his time, which could be perfect for a December/January visit to seal the deal.

McClure will be visiting for the Georgia game.

I've got a good feeling here because Ash is likely to survive any staff change. We can also promise an opportunity to compete immediately for a starting spot since we graduate both of our corners. That certainly isn't dependent on Hawkins and company being around in 2011.

Getting him to visit is a very positive step. I still think he will take his time and we should be in it until the very end.

It may be helping us here that we've got his teammate, Alex Kelley, also visiting on October 2nd. If we could land both of those guys it would start looking like a very solid class. Since early playing time is in the offering for both the CB and C positions, I actually think we're in great shape.

New Scout interview: McClure eager to see Boulder

So what is it about Colorado that has the Buffs among McClure's finalists?

"It's a nice place to live and great school and everything," he said. "Then on top of that you get coached by a former pro in coach Ashley Ambrose. So that's a great opportunity right there. He'll coach you up and get you ready for the next level. He's been there, knows what it's like and has connections and everything like that."
It also sounds like he's got a great relationship with Ash, loves the playing time opportunity, and the Pac-12 move is huge for him. Hopefully we get the announcement for 2011 before his visit.

Oh, and I think he keeps himself pretty fit too:
