Ballenger redshirted in 2007. Then he saw some limited action in 2008, but was passed on the depth chart by true freshman Tyler Hansen and transferred during spring practices prior to the 2009 season. A highly regarded 2-sport athlete in high school, Ballenger elected to play basketball at College of Idaho, a strong NAIA program.
Matt Ballenger was two-time Idaho Gatorade Player of the year in basketball.
I found an article written shortly after Matt left the program and his quote sums up the situation.
After junior Cody Hawkins and sophomore Tyler Hansen took the lead in the quarterback race at Colorado during spring practices, Ballenger’s snaps took a nose dive.
In his first collegiate action last season, Ballenger completed 8-of-12 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown against Texas and Kansas.
“I was at a crossroads — I didn’t have much of a chance to play, and I didn’t have a ton of time left,” Ballenger said.
