    1st scrimmage of the spring

A few things I noticed that hopefully are within the bounds of what we can say:

    Kicking:
at the end of each series they would line up for a 32 yard field goal or thereabouts.
    Goodman missed his.
    Kirkwood missed his.
Grossnickle made his. He then made the next 4 or 5. Cool as a cucumber. Looked like a kicker.
Goodman made one near the end.

    Punting:
Grossnickle is the only one punting. Ridiculous hang time on punts that spiraled. Some didn't. One bad punt, a few ok, and a few very nice.

    Offense:
No running game today. Didn't really try to run it. Seems like they are working on a lot of new stuff getting receivers the ball in space. Disappointed in the "push" from O-Line. I think the D-Line dominated the O-Line today. You'd expect that to be the case early in the spring and even in the fall. One mistake, and the play is blown up. There was plenty of that as expected.

Both QB's were up and down. Hansen looks like the starter to me. Hirschman came in 3rd and looked pretty impressive. That guy looks like a 3 year starter....

Evans absolutely looks phenomenal at Tight End. Catches everything. Runs like a WR. Kind of weighs like a WR.... Thornton is a beast. Why did we bring in 4 TE's again?

Orms. Dude looks like he snuck on the field and stole a uniform. But he's everywhere. Coaches would say he has a NOSE for the ball.

Olatoye. Stud Corner. Jalil is hoping to hold him off for his senior year.

Major, Kasa - both look like the real deal. Kasa looks huge. Major picked off Hansen (forced pass) and took it back 50 yards.

Will Jeff made some nice plays, but dropped a wide open pass. He looks quicker than last fall.

Running backs didn't do much. Speedy had a couple nice punt returns. Q and Nabors just didn't have any daylight from what I could tell.

Mahnke made some nice plays and he was floating between LB and coverage on the nickel/dime packages. Saw Moten make a play - he's got some athleticism and instincts....

Highlights were that we have some young players who can play this game. Besides the ones mentioned above, Webb, Rippy, Nobriga and Vigo all looked good. Combine these with West, Pericek, Kasa, Polk, Bonsu.... Not bad. We've got some good young athletes, a guy who looks like the QB of the future, and a kicker. Good day.

was able to stop in for about 10 minutes. i was mildly encouraged.....no real scientific comments. agree that the emphasis was on the pass, at least from what i saw. Hanson looked pretty good....missed a few open guys downfield a few times but moved the chains.

vigo did not have a good day. pretty horrible day actually. nothing against the kid, but i hope we won't have to see him much this year because he has a lot to learn. olatoye will be a good one, but i don't think he will take over for jalil this year. agree with pretty much everything else.

My buddy was not nearly as encouraged as you two.

Also, there is a reason the pass is being emphasized-we are going to pass the ball quite often this season. I will maintain that stance until I see evidence to the contrary.

I don't think you can tell much from these scrimmages that projects to how the team will play next season. I'm more focused on which guys are looking good and moving up the depth chart (and vice versa).

My big area of concern remains the OL. We've got 2 guys I trust (Solder and Miller). I did hear that Richter looked good with the 2s today and may join the 1s soon.

I'm confident it's going to lean slightly toward the passing end of the spectrum. Hansen's scrambling ability + WR and possibly TE depth points to this some, but especially because Speedy, while talented, will not hold up as an every down, 20+ carries a game back. Nor do we have any tested short-yardage bruisers behind him.

Which just points out what an epic failure this coaching staff is. Just last year we were being told about the power running game that was going to be the identity of the offense. Squawk was always winking and chuckling in interviews about how good the running game was going to be. That turned out well. Now it is back to passing again. Wake me when this nightmare is over.
There is no place like Nebraska...THANK GOD!!!!

"I went to State" could mean a hundred different places. "I went to Colorado" can only mean one.

OL is my main concern, but I have to say I am still concerned with the QB position. The interior line HAS to get better, center may end up being the weak link. I think Hansen is an upgrade over Cody, but I am not sure he is much more than that. Hope I am wrong.

Its funny to read the various reports. Rivals, which has turned into a hate filled cesspool in my opinion, has a bunch of negative reports on this practice. This sucked, that sucked, everything sucked cause the head coach sucked...
This one is way more positive. The optimist in me wants to bury my head in the sand and take this report as gospel.

I heard that they were working on a lot of little things and getting their horns out. In today's comptetive college football world, you simply must get your horns out.

Amazing how you hear different things from different people. I heard that they brought their lunchpails yesterday, pounded away at that concrete, and may have seen the first crack. Who knows what to believe these days?

its impossible to get a good read from these scrimmages. if one side of the ball is doing things right, the other isn't. you can choose which one to report on.
