I don't know if there's any truth to this one, but I saw someone else post it on a premium site (so I guess I'm not the only person who heard this). Since I don't see how it could do anything but help the Buffs if this got out even if there's no truth to it, I'm going to go ahead and post it.
Supposedly...
Sheryl "The female Michael Jordan" Swoopes is in town interviewing to join Lappe's staff.
I'm no expert, but I assume it would be good for recruiting if we are able to bring in Swoopes, with her Texas roots, national name recognition, multiple WNBA MVPs, multiple WNBA Championships, multiple Gold Medals, NCAA National Championship and NCAA Player of the Year (plus a boatload of scoring records).
Cross your fingers.
And don't be too pissed at me for posting this if it turns out to be a false rumor.![]()

This would be huge for the program if she accepts (I am assuming that the offer is a foregone conclusion).Colorado women's basketball coach Linda Lappe confirmed Friday that she interviewed WNBA and Texas Tech legend Sheryl Swoopes this week for one of the two assistant coaching vacancies on her staff.

I really hope this happens, but I wonder about one thing. She came out as a lesbian some years back, and as a coach, she'd be in the locker rooms with the girls she recruits. I wonder how girls would feel about having a lesbian coach...
I personlly don't think it'd be a problem for her recruiting. I mean, if I were a HS bball stud right now, and MJ came out of the closet but was still recruiting me, I'd still be tempted to go play for him.
It'd be a good get from a recruiting perspective. I'm surprised she isn't coaching somewhere already.
In a perfect world, nobody would care if/when she came out. I would think most of the recruits would be more interested in what she could teach them on the court and not so interested in her personal life. I mean, if Martina Navratilova wanted to give you tennis lessons, would you care what she did on the weekends?
Can only speak for myself, but my kids are very comfortable with being around people regardless of orientation, and have good friends of both sexes who, uhm, like both sexes. It doesn't seem to be as big an issue with the younger generation; they've grown up with more accepting attitude. (Excepting, of course, those who have led small-town sheltered lives, don't know any gay people, or have a religious background that prevents tolerance.)
Let's hope it's a non-issue for CU and the players if she is interested in coaching here.
Belated rep for a good rumor proven true.
It will depend, a lot, on what kind of atmosphere there is on the team. The comfort level a recruit and her family feels. A coworker's daughter was recruited to a big time program a few years ago. There was a lot of outward "stuff" going on during her recruiting trip. Lets just say that she was very uncomfortable during her recruiting visit. So, it will be up to the coaching staff to run a professional program. I hate to even discuss this stuff because it will most assuredly lead to an argument.
I wonder how recruits would feel about a heterosexual male as a head or assistant? That doesn't seem to be a problem, and frankly there is more likely to be sexual harrasment by a male coach and female player than by a lesbian coach and female player.
If anyone is closed-minded enough to think that just because she is gay, she is going to hit on the player, please go find another school to play for.
I don't think it would be as big of a deal as some people seem to think.
Why would someone care? Unless they had a strong prejudice, I can't see how it would matter.
There really is no good argument a parent could make why he/she would not want his/her adult daughter to have a lesbian basketball coach. The only argument I thought about that may have some credence is not wanting a lesbian in a "role model" position around your daughter because that goes against the morality you have taught. But that doesn't wash, because it's not like that same parent is going to vet every professor within his/her daughter's chosen major to make sure there aren't any gays that are teaching in that department, that the university doesn't have any gay advisors, etc.
But maybe I'm just expecting people to be logical, a lot of people aren't, and there is a whole lot more prejudice out there than I realize.
In this day and age, a male coach had better damned well have policies in place where no male coach is ever alone with a female player. I would think the same rule would apply if the coach were a known lesbian, wouldn't it? It isn't about being close minded. Its about not being naive.
