Coach Boyle and Coach Lappe at Blake Street Tavern Wednesday, June 30th

Announcement from JerryCoBuffs (Denver Buff Club, Men's Basketball), originally posted on Rivals:

Hey Basketball fans. This Wednesday evening, June 30, 2010, we have an opportunity to get our summer baskeball "fix" by attending a free event at Blake Street Tavern with our two new BB coaches. The event starts at 5:00 p.m. at Blake Street Tavern's NEW location, 2301 Blake Street, a little closer to Coors Field but still on Blake Street.

Our friend, Chris Fuselier is providing free hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar in his new tailgate room. The new facility will allow for even larger CU events. Not only is the tailgate room available, but his new patio has great views of Coors Field and the Rockies.

I believe that Coach Boyle will build on Jeff Bzdelik's growth of the Men's program and that Coach Lappe - a great, passionate Buff herself - will turn the Women's program around! I really like the moves that each has made since they were hired late in the recruiting period. Wednesday night at Blake Street Tavern we can learn about the new recruits, new coaching staffs and plans our Coaches have for our two basketball programs. CU there!

    ***************

It doesn't look like I'll be able to make it. I really hope that some people from AllBuffs make it so we can get a report on here. Good things are happening with our basketball programs. And Blake Street Tavern is a really great supporter of CU athletics.

It was a nice event, and it was great to finally hear Coach Boyle speak in person. There wasn't a ton of new information, but here are a few things:

    - We will not be running the Princeton offense this year. He thinks it is important to have an offense that allows for more of a post presence, even if it's a guard posting up.

    - He wants to schedule more games against area teams, but maybe not play every team every year. There need to be some games to build confidence and experience, but also some tough games to test yourself.

    - It sounds like the other players have been impressed with Andre Roberson during pickup games this summer. Very aggressive defensively and on the boards.

    - They've been working Ben Mills hard in the weight room to put on some muscle. Coach said Ben is 7'1".

    - The coaches are about to hit the recruiting trail very hard in July. It sounds like the work has been non-stop since he arrived on campus.

Overall, I was impressed by coach, and feel good about the hire. Go BUFFS!!

And I forgot to give a shout out to Blake Street Tavern. First time there since it reopened, and they did a really nice job. Definitely worth checking out.

    Thanks, NiTown. Rep.

I'm getting pretty excited about our team this year and going forward.

Love the part about having a post-up game, even if it's from a guard. There were so many times last year when I saw a small, quick PG on Nate and thought we need to take advantage by posting that guy up. Moreover, there were times the other times the other team put a small guard on Burks and we didn't post. Bzdelik's offense simply didn't offer that wrinkle and it kept us from exploiting some matchups. With our shooters and penetrators, we've got to be able to force teams to play zone so we can take full advantage of them.

Also, sounds like the new Blake Street Tavern is going to be the place to catch away games this year. Off-street parking now, too.

I don't think posting our guards will force a team to go into a zone. At least I wouldn't if I were the other coach - if you're posting guards, I just switch the matchup or make sure the team helps better. If you're posting a big, then yes, I may consider it.

I will defend Bz though - his system didn't really focus on post play nor did he have the personnel. Yes, chicken v egg, with probably more of the former. Still, I personally do not want to see any of our smalls try posting. Maybe Higgins could pull it off, but still... Coach Boyle is the coach though, so if he coaches some of them post moves, great...but still, he doesn't have the personnel for it in my opinion.

me too. you can't give up that much of the court and close to the hoop (rebounding!) or the FT line. you have to make people guard that area of the floor. the only team of recent memory that i've seen work that were Beilein's WVU teams and they had that big kid with the funny name and tats who could stroke the 3. i saw them destroy a pretty good Oklahoma team in OKC with my step-dad (OU guy) in some holiday tournament at the Ford Center (lux boxes, yo). they ran a Kelvin Sampson D ragged around the perimeter with backdoor, perimeter switching and stroking the 3.
