The doors opened 4 minutes ago. Where is my recap?
Always acknowledge a fault. This will throw those in authority off their guard and give you an opportunity to commit more."
Mark Twain (1835 - 1910)
Everyone milled around chatting for a while. Then they served lunch. Next, Embree got up and talked about the recruits. Other people spoke as well. There may have been cheerleaders and music. After it was over, everyone left.
Pac-12 - The Conference That Can Count
Another good time. This was so much better than they have been for awhile.
Jeremy Bloom told the story about how he worked since he was 8 years old to win an Olympic Gold Medal - he showed the clip of his failed final run. He said that was the lowest he has every felt...said when stuff like that happens he takes 48 hours to dissect everything and when that 48 hours is over he moves on. He then talked about Buff football and how bad it hurt to see how so of the past seasons did not live up to his expectations of effort and desire. He then said Buff Nation our 48 hours are over. Very good speech.
Embree, Coach Mac talked about the great fan support and that we want to keep improving it. Embree said 3 of the kids that visited on the Oregon game committed and they mentioned the fan support for a down program.
Videos of players...
Chicken was the main course.
Mac spoke, great as always.
Jeremy Bloom spoke too.
First impressions?
CU loaded up at DB and RB.
Marques Mosley is going to be a safety most likely. Had a clip with him bringing tthe wood. He's going to be good. We already know about Wright and Crawley, they looked the part on film. Embo said John Walker will likely be nickel. Jeff Hall may play pro baseball.
RB's. No more dancing academy, these guys lower the pads and go forward. Abron looks like a EB clone. Small compact and powerful. Fast too. Crowder looks more like a power back, while Payne has a nice mix of speed and power.
The Irwin boys will surprise. Cy-Fair is a 5A team in TX. I played in a 5A league there. It is big boy FB and they both looked dominant.
DL. Jagne looked VERY athletic. My guess is Topua (sp?) is the most likely DL to get significant PT.
Gerald Thomas is fast, fast and fast. He looked to me like a holy terror in the slot. He will cause serious problems on underneath crossing routes with the other two WR's looking more like possesion guys, but not slow by any stretch.. They are just both tall and went up to get the ball on many of the clips.
Hobbs and Ray stood out at TE too.
Dillon looked like the real deal, someone said he was 6'6" now.
MB announced the new video boards that looked sweet, kudos there. He also said more is in the works and to be patient.
Rubber chicken (actually the food was pretty good) but standard hotel/banquet fare.
Kudos to BuffHerd who gave me his ticket.
Boo to 'nik and the ret of the AB'ers, I never could find you guys.
@Lefty - I texted you at the number you gave me with our table # and location.
I was there late, though (maybe 20 after 1). Still sick. It was tough to get going and even tougher to stay alert once I was there.
Bloom's speech should have been half as long as it was. It's an inspiring story, though, and he did tie it in with an important message: After disappointment, Bloom would always take 48 hours to dwell on it and then would move on motivated by what he's going to do next. Our 48 hours are up on the Scandal-thru-Hawkins era.
Tad did a nice job in the short time he had (got a standing O). Bohn was the best I've seen him - to the point without the "rah rah" stuff he can go overboard with. It's always a privilege to hear Mac speak. Embree was great.
Major announcements:
- $7 million scoreboards
- Mac is hosting pre-spring game party for Buff Club members in the practice bubble. He'll have speakers, it's only 10 bucks, and it's free if you bring a prospective new Buff Club member.
- Mac will also be doing a big banquet in the fall
- Women's Lacrosse was announced as 12 scholarships, 25 woman roster, and kicking off in the spring of 2014
- They raised money for new turf in the bubble (it's 11 years into an 8 year life) and players use the indoor facility all winter and summer to save the grass on the regular fields
- Folsom renovation & expansion with new indoor training facility was alluded to but not announced
@nik, that is weird, I called the number you gave me and asked for you, I was told it was a wrong #. I still haven't recieved the text you sent. Weird. No worries, sat with some nice people, all is well.
Wow where did my post in this thread go?
Good time at the luncheon. Nice to meet BuffaloBrad and good to see Nik and Dio.
The main highlights have already been covered. They also showed part of the Buffs video that was made a couple months ago.
As far as the highlights themselves, you can tell in general the overall speed and athleticism of the class is an upgrade from the past several years. As far as individual players that stood out:
-Kisima Jagne: Nik and I were talking about how much upside he has, probably the most in the entire class. Kid is just a freak athletically.
-Josh Tupou: Nik has been raving about him for a while and I am finally seeing the light. He looks college-ready right now and should the field early on.
-Gerald Thomas: Get this kid back fielding punts/kicks immediately. He has an extra gear few (if any) players on the current roster possess. Very smooth in the open field.
-Austin Ray: Athletic kid at position of need = counting on seeing him earn early playing time.
-The DB group: In general, just a gigantic step up in overall talent from our current group.
I'll just add that Embo said he is meeting with Nike in march "Were not joining the uniform race with Oregon but we will have something special for you"
