Espinoza walked on with Colorado in 2007 as a Free Safety and Wide Receiver after being a 2-time All-State selection on the Colorado 3A level. He redshirted in 2007, worked primarily as a slot WR in practice, and won the Offensive Scout Award. He missed the first 5 games of the 2008 season with a broken collarbone, and then the last 3 with the same injury. In 2009, Espinoza was pressed into a starting WR role after Josh Smith transferred and Markques Simas was suspended for the first 2 games (and had a leg injury). Espy caught 13 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown. Although he appeared in 11 games, he was severely limited after breaking his thumb during practices the week of the West Virginia game (week 4). Espinoza was also the team's primary punt returner, with 22 returns for 68 yards (3.1 avg) -- including a long of 15 yards. Espy is expected to earn playing time backing up Scotty McKnight in the slot WR position and is also competing to be the team's punt returner again in 2010. As of spring 2010, Espy has yet to be awarded a scholarship.
