Mahnke played all 12 games as a true freshman in 2008, becoming the starter at safety when Ryan Walters went down with an injury on the 1st play of the next to last game of the season. Entering 2009, Mahnke was atop the depth chart at SS but a high ankle sprain severely limited him and he only played in 4 games all season. For the spring of 2010, Mahnke is making a position change to weakside ILB ("Will"), where he and the coaches feel his skills can best be utilized since he's an explosive player but lacks the speed you would look for in a DB. Mahnke is currently running with the 2nd team behind Jon Major, is looking to gain another 10-15 lbs, and will likely be utilized mostly in passing situations.
