Hicks redshirted in 2008 and began working at cornerback. He was 4th on the CB depth chart as a freshman in 2009, but did not earn any playing time. Hicks is being held out of 2010 spring practices due to academics. It is unclear whether he will be eligible for the 2010 season.

Hicks decided to leave the team and the university.

Does this hurt our graduation rate per the new NCAA rules/guidelines?

Yes. Especially if he leaves the program while academically ineligible (that's the double whammy).

Wait so, even if a guy leaves in good academic standing, CU is still penalized? How stupid is the NCAA..

Academically ineligible means he's NOT in good academic standing.

No I know that, I mean, if a guy leaves while he's in good academic standing, the NCAA still penalizes the school? I'm not talking specifically about Stephen Hicks here, just a general question.

I'll work on the specifics, but iirc there are 2 criteria (each worth 1 point).

    1. Is the player on track to graduate within 5 years?
    2. Is the player with the program / school?

So each player in your program is worth a max of 2 points, but could get you 0/2.

Ok so.. are we on track to get nailed by the NCAA? It doesn't seem to me like we have an above average number of people leaving or not on track to graduate, how are the Florida States of the world not getting ran over by the NCAA? I guess I'm just surprised that the NCAA will still penalize the school even if a kid is good to go on the academic front, he just wanted to go back home.

When the APR gets released in the next couple months, be prepared for some ugliness.

How can that be? Hawk is study hall monitor extraordinaire, I was counting on a couple more Rhodes Scholars....

You're not going to want to hear this, but the main problem is going to be the final GB year and the 2006 transitional year they were both responsible for. Our APR score has gone up every year under Hawk.
