No - not signed. He had some delayed ncaa paperwork problem (now solved) and report is he took a visit to CU this week. He is a possibility, although CU hasn't apparently offered, they are in contact.

Hmmm. I wonder how much this might have to do with Andre Simmons.

I'm really not sure. It's just weird that we'd be in on a WR this late in the game. Maybe Hawkins is just being extra careful.

It is weird. Here's to hoping it's just cause we are ultra-thin there.

We have the 'ship to spare, even assuming Andre Simmons is A-Ok.

Yep. We're at 76 schollies right now (79 if you count Moten, Nuckols & Simon). Even if we add another scholarship player, we're still going to be taking pretty much all of the upcoming APR penalty early.

It seems like we're scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I think (assuming Simmons qualifies) we should save the scholarship and get a JUCO kid this year. It doesn't even have to be a Juco WR. We can go hard after a '10 prospect.

Even if Simmons qualifies, we did lose another WR after the 09 class was "finished"...

Yep. Would be nice to go after three high schoolers for the 2010 class. I don't even know what to make of our WR situation any more.

For me, it depends on whether Jefferson is someone we would have offered last autumn/winter if we had foresight to know he would be a full qualifier. If not, then I wouldn't burn the scholarship. If he is, there's no reason not to put him under scholarship with the 2009 class.

For instance, I'm pretty sure that Darryl Jenkins (top senior WR with Clark Evans at Los Al last year) would have been offered if he'd had the grades. If he had become a full qualifier, I wouldn't have questioned at all bringing him in as part of the 2009 class. If Jefferson is rated similarly by Kiesau and company, then by all means get him in.

We need depth this year. Next year it's like we've already signed two highly rated veteran WRs with Clemons and Celestine becoming eligible to play (assuming KC makes it). I could deal with only bringing in 2 WRs in the 2010 class.

Really? He indicated there was some NCAA glitch, since resolved, that soured a few other schools on recruiting him. He's fully qualified and he looked like a good player from the stats and highlights and all-star teams/awards.

I wonder if someone saw him play in the July 12 All star game and shared a recommendation to Hawkins?

I mean, it's possible he's good. And he's available now.

If they were just going after anybody, then some of the other "I'll commit if you offer" WR guys would already be here. They were looking for something particular.

Every other school backed off of him.

And Jefferson made it known that he'd commit if we offered.

Who knows what happened with Jean-Baptiste and Jewell Hardy. but I still think we should just move on from last years class.

Ringo should have found out why the kid came to visit now.

Did the paperwork just suddenly get cured or has it been in place for a few months and "all of a sudden, Kiesau called". I'm worried that if it's the latter, my fears have become reality.

Re: '09 CA WR William Jefferson

I'm concerned, but not overly much since he's a California kid who switched schools for his senior year. Considering we just found out about Nuckols and Moten in the past week, it wouldn't be unusual at all for Jefferson to have only become a full qualifier last week. There is a good chance that this has nothing to do with Simmons and we are having a break go our way with Jefferson.

Besides, it's less stressful and more fun to assume the best.

The scout story indicated the change in high schools put him in some kind of academic limbo, but that Keisau kept in touch "the whole time."

When it became clear he was a full qualifier, they brought him out to Boulder. The timing was probably affected by him playing in the all star game July 12, so he wouldn't have been available until after that point.

I completely agree. Most of our recruits have shown up on campus already and have gotten some playbook and physical conditioning. If this guy shows up, then he'll be very behind, and I doubt that he'll be a contributor this year. So, why not just go hard after next year's WR class; we already have Clemons for sure coming in next year, perhaps Celestine too.

Re: '09 CA WR William Jefferson

That logic would suggest we not recruit California. None of the Cal kids have seen any significant time here on campus and will be as fresh as this kid when camp starts next week.

Clearly, the staff doesn't bring this kid here unless they think he can play and probably play THIS year. If Simmons doesn't get in, it's really wide-open. Darden and Ussery are not speed guys by any stretch, but more of a big-body type. Same with Clemons for next year.

If this kid is any good, even if he doesn't play this year, he'd be way further ahead next year after redshirting than any 2010 kid we'd bring in.

I am real nervous now about the Simmons situation. Real nervous.

Re: '09 CA WR William Jefferson

That is the bottom line, if the kid is good enough to play and contribute to a Big XII winning team bring him in, if he is not then leave the scholly for next year.

When you have a chance to get good players take them, if they are good enough you can then figure out a way to get them on the field.

On the other hand, don't take guys just because you have space for guys, if they aren't likely to contribute they don't help you much having them around, work harder and find someone else.

I hope and believe that this kid and the Simmons situation are two totally different things. Simmons is help right now. JC transfers only have two years in which to show, Simmons should come in and contribute this year, be a difference maker next year and then he is gone.

If Jefferson comes in, especially this late it is logical that he would RS this year, then start to gradually work his way into the lineup meaning that he would not be a significant contributor until after Simmons is gone, this assuming that he does become a significant contributor which is never a lock with any player regardless of how highly rated they are coming in.

Re: '09 CA WR William Jefferson

If this has anything to do with the Simmons situation, the coaches will have a lot of explaining to do. I think this staff has done a pretty good job recruiting, but they have really dropped the ball on WRs. You guys can spin this situation all you want, but it is not a coincidence that our WR situation is questionable right now. The staff has earned the benefit of the doubt in a lot of areas, but WR recruiting is not one of those. Talk about hodge podge.
