Kid would get a chance to be a major factor from day one. Kinda wish we could find a guy who could potentially punt too, but I guess we're just going to hope for the best with DiLallo in 2009.

This kid can punt a little too. Might need a little more work there, but he can do it.

Oh and, GO ANGELS!!! (don't often get to say that about my old high school football team).

Can he hit the broad side of a barn?

If yes, then sign him. Hell, even if he can come close to the broad side of a barn he's better than what we've got, sign him anyway!

Can we even think about offering another kicker? Don't we already have two roster spots comitted to kickers already? I know that both suck, but how many kickers can a team have on scholarship?

In his defense, Money hit a lot of uprights this season. You don't get much "closer" to the broad side of a barn than that. I think he'll be fine.

Re: '09 CO K Zach Grossnickle

I'd say that's a bit over the top. Davis, a freshman, was hurt all year and didn't kick FG's for that reason. We can't say he sucks. I "think" that he either Davis' injury means he's done as a kicker or Aric is giving it up, if we offer another kicker (only) this year. No one has 3 kickers on scholarship for the next two years! If we offer a kicker/punter combo, we obviously need a punter asap.

I'm also with Walrus in that I think Aric will be fine. It's a streaky thing. He didn't lose the recipe completely as I've seen some do. He was hitting them pretty good and just barely missing. I'm a bit concerned when they say he makes them all in practice, but I think Davis is adequate insurance, if he gets healthy. If the guy can punt fine. If he can't, I think we are ok as we are. we need all the schollies to be used in other areas.

I've got some experience with losing the recipe. My roomate my senior year was a scholarship kicker who had been Juco All-American and NEVER missed a kick (seriously he was like 16 for 17, with long ones in there) in Juco. He lost the recipe and couldn't make a thing. He was 4th string, with the 3 ahead of him all walkons. He never got it back. He did kickoff though.

    4-14 says otherwise.

Re: '09 CO K Zach Grossnickle

I'd actually be more concerned if he made 9-14, but the 5 he missed, he hooked horribly. Instead, every miss was close and he missed both right and left. I think the 4-14 was a team stat. Davis was 1-2 I believe. Aric had at least 2 blocked or otherwise muffed.

I think there's a fair chance he gets it right. If not, Davis, when healthy, was a top kicker coming out of high school.

    Get some WR's and DL's!!!!

It's a tough spot for Hawk to be in. He didn't expect to have such problems in the kicking game. To use four scholarships on kickers & punters is very unusual. While I agree with you that we need to get a competent kicker in here, it's not hard to see why Hawk is having a hard time swallowing the notion of using another scholarship on a guy who will only be in for a handful of plays in a game. On the plus side, Goodman is going to be a junior, so his scholarship won't create a problem for too long.

plus apparently davis is having his FIFTH knee surgery this offseason... Yikes, sounds like its a need. Additionally, his punt stats are prettty sweet. avg of 40 (net or total Ringo didn't say) with a hang time of 4.2?!!!

Also, our punter to be is a senior... I dunno, it really does sound like we should offer him.

I'm not sure Jameson Davis is ever going to be completely healthy.

Re: '09 CO K Zach Grossnickle

wow that would be three kickers on scholly, 2 who can't hit crap and one incoming freshmen who we would put all of our chips on.

What's there to lose...why not he's probably better than the two kickers we already have. Offer him already, and if he can't hit anything we'll just have DS kick fieldgoals.

The risk, of course, it that Grossnickle ends up having the same problems as Davis & Goodman. In that situation, we'd have three kickers on scholarship, none of which is any good. I'm certainly not saying that would be the case here, but it's a risk that I'm sure is weighing heavily on Hawk's head.

Re: '09 CO K Zach Grossnickle

The article makes a really interesting point: "Scholarships are awarded on an annual basis, and it's possible if CU added Grossnickle to the mix or another combination kicker like him, that coaches will ask one or more of the current kickers to return to the program as a walk-on."

"I actually talked to coach Hawkins when I went up there a couple weeks ago and he was like, 'I'm going to scholarship whoever is better"

Scholarships are in fact 1 year agreements, but they are certainly intended to cover the full 4-5 years of eligibility when you recruit a kid in. Even disappointments generally have the full education paid for. If the kid is a walk-on who is awarded a scholarship, that can be quite different.

In Goodman's case, he was awarded a scholie this year early in the season after winning the job. He came here paying his own way and if it turns out he's not good enough to win the job, it sounds like he doesn't keep the scholarship. That's good news. I still think this kid can kick, but you can't have 2 kickers on scholarship. You also got to be careful that Goodman isn't just a practice kicker. I'd think putting his scholarship on the line in practice would be a reasonable simulation of game pressure!

Davis came in as damaged goods it sounds like. I had no idea this guy had 4 previous knee operations. We will need to know soon enough if his scholarship is going to count against our 85 total or if it's put back into the pool because he can no longer compete for medical reasons. 5 knee operations and he's a freshmen? Geez.....

I don't see how he finishes his career on the field. Hope I'm wrong and he makes a huge, positive impact for the team, but I just don't see it.

Goodman will be a lot better next year. He has a strong leg and can be accurate and he will mentally adjust to be the man. This is all rumor though, so take it for what it's worth.

Maybe Hawk can convince this kid to walk on and compete with the other two kickers during spring ball and award a scholly to the best two kickers and pull one...

He'll be still in high school during spring ball.... That would prevent a spring competition.

If you read the comments section, Grossnickle's father completely refutes this. It was a particularly aggregious piece of lazy journalism on Ringo's part.
