Am I the only one really excited about this guy? He is listed on the roster as 6'4 205 so he definitely has the size to to play right away. He is very intelligent (he went to one of the most difficult HS's in Texas and had an offer from Stanford) and has some pretty impressive bloodlines as well. He's a good football player too. In only 5 games as a SR his stats were:

    45 receptions, 540 yards and 4 TD's

That's very good for HS. I think we got a steal

Let's hope it turns out to be a good fit.
His 40 clocks in at 4.47, so he's pretty quick, too.

I'm hoping for combination of Josh's speed and McKnight's ability to run crisp routes.

    I'm excited.
Just trying to play it cool.

I am pretty psyched about most of the incoming class, including a couple of the walkons who I think are steals as well.

I think he has a chance to make an immediate impact. Hope we're able to redshirt Darden though. Should be interesting to see which true freshmen see playing time this year.

He has the size, speed and smarts to pick up the playbook quickly. He has a chance to become a starter by mid-season, imo.

    Re: Ussery

If he is a starter by mid-season, something has gone wrong IMO. Between Simas, McKnight, and Simmons (if he gets here), those are guys he has to beat out. Just do not see that happening.

Think he can make an impact though.

Except sometimes you have to shake things up for effect, a la Hansen's start.

Maybe, but we're in trouble if a true freshman is starting at WR by mid-season. At some point, the upperclassmen have to carry this team.

If a true freshman were to come in and be explosive, that would be a GREAT thing as opposed to being "in trouble." If the upperclassmen got it covered, that's wonderful, but if any of the freshmen turn out to be not just ready to play, but ready to dominate, I'm all for it.

    Re: Ussery

I don't see it happening either way, but I do think something bad would have to happen for Ussery to be starting next year. But hey, if it happens, we can always hear more talk about young the team is. It is an annual tradition around here.

I agree that it is used as an excuse too often. Last year though it was true, we had I believe the 3rd youngest team in 1-A. Sadly the 1st and 2nd youngest teams did okay...Texas and Florida. No more excuses about youth!

It's the very real legacy of the last couple of Barnett years, when recruiting really went south. BB and AJ are both right, though - we were in trouble when Hansen started, whereas Stewart clearly earned the spot.

Well, also, if you add on top our youth the amount of games lost to injury, then I don't think there were too many teams that had the adversity that we did.

    Re: Ussery

We ARE in trouble at WR whether or not Ussery is the starter by midseason. The fact is, we have former walkon (McKnight) as our only experienced WR.

If Simmons is able to get in, he will have missed the whole summer period. Ussery will have been here since June 1 learning the offense, along with Darden.

We need some miracles here as I feel the only way to improve the offense was to improve the running game. The running game will be stuffed if the D loads up the box and doesn't respect the passing game.

For CU to win 7 games this year, we need huge contributions from some WR's we haven't seen yet.... pick at least 3 from Simas, Simmons, Ussery, Darden and the various walk-ons.

    Re: Ussery

Simmons will be good, but he'll have to learn the playbook quickly.

He'll most likely get reps since it'd be nice to have a big at WR that can push the CBs around when we run the ball to the outside or setup screen plays. That's why I think he has a chance (I hope he gains another 10# as well).

Just curious. Did Ussery (the son) graduate from CU after he retired from football?

No chit, I was young in 09. Time flies, wonder if he's gonna follow in his dad's footsteps and do that side of the business?
