We got a solid chance to land this guy as an early commit.

Nah, we're recruiting him as a LB from what I can tell. Might be a bit short, but you get him to 225-230 and that is plenty big for a LB.

Sounds like we have a decent shot. And it looks like he has a dip in

Spring football insider: Q&A with Garrett Gilliland

    By DAMIAN CALHOUN
    OCVarsity.com

Here is a Q&A with Orange Lutheran running back/linebacker Garret Gilliland.
Gilliland was an All-County linebacker last season for the Lancers. He has already been offered scholarships by Colorado, Washington and Fresno State.

I really thought this kid would've committed to us by now. I guess I'm starting to get greedy.

Me too. He said his visit was "awesome". It's going to be us or Washington, probably. We should get an official during the season (he said he'd take 2 or 3). Also, we've got both Cabral and Riddle on him and they've been two of our best recruiters. I still feel good about Garret.

I agree with you on Riddle. He definitely is one of the best recruiters on the staff. He does a great job in SoCal.

ESPN had an update on him a couple days ago. Still has us and Washington as his leaders. Wants to take visits to both.

There isn't much question about that happening, but that could just make him think he can play sooner there. If that's his motivation, it could actually work against us. I'm hoping he concentrates more on getting to the next level with Cabral - the best teacher in college at the position.

    Gilliand waiting on visits

One player I was hoping to see at the recent Orange Lutheran (Calif.) and Redlands East Valley (Calif.) game Friday night was Lancers linebacker Garrett Gilliand. Unfortunately, the athlete was injured the previous week and will likely miss the next three weeks of action.

He is one of the state's top two-way performers at running back and linebacker. He was the Trinity League defensive player of the year as a junior. Gilliand was on crutches before the game and said he's hopeful to make it back on the field before too long.

"I damaged some tendons above my ankle," Gilliand said. "It happened on defense in a pile up and then I tried to play through it and when I was running with the ball, I think I made it even worse.

"I was not really given a time table for when I'll be back but hopefully I'll be back when we play Mater Dei the middle of October. That's a big game but in the Trinity League, every game is pretty big."

Gilliand had an official visit planned to Washington back on September 4 when the Huskies took on LSU, but had to re-schedule it.

"I couldn't make it because of a team conflict," Gilliand said. "I'm going to try and trip out there in October and I really like Washington a lot. I took an unofficial visit there in the summer and just loved it there and they have been very impressive to watch this year.

"I haven't set any other visits, but I'm still talking with all the schools that have offered me like Duke, San Diego State, Fresno State and Colorado. Washington is my top school but I want to take some visits before I end up committing anywhere."

I thought we had a good shot at Garret, but he committed to Washington today.

ESPN still has him as a Verbal Commit for Washington. Scout and Rivals just show high interest in UDUB. Scout's also showing a lot of interest in Fresno State.

UW never accepted his committment. Same thing with OL Michael Criste. They are "Plan B" guys and there likely won't be an answer on those two until LOI day. Nobody on any UW site to my knowledge considers them "commits".

UW has 28 commits (of a 25 max number, assuming they are not up against the 85 max number).
In addition they had another couple guys OV this past weekend that haven't committed and Ricky Heimuli schedule in a couple weeks (top rated DT) who has yet to pick a school. I think it's likely that a handful of guys may become available soon for the Oregon States, Boise States and potentially CU's of the world........

The 85 number will definitely be the kicker. It would be quite easy for UW to sign 30 or 31 players this year, and program attrition will be the real key. Of the current commits one has already enrolled and counts against last year's class, and there are at least 3 others that are anticipating enrolling early (March) and counting against last year's class. One is near certain to grayshirt due to injury, so that alone opens up 5 recruiting spots this year which would allow the comfortable signing of 30. At least one current commit is not expected to qualify academically this year, and possibly two. So this year's numbers are not as big of a deal as an outsider would think. The big question is how much more attrition occurs to keep the overall number below 85. I believe without attrition, there would only be 23 spots to give as of today. There will definitely be more attrition though so UW can sign more than 23 this year and officially hitting 25 won't be difficult. There have already been a few defectors, most recently QB#2 earlier this week.

For guys like Ricky Heimuli, Pullard Hayes or Josh Shirley there will be a spot if they want one. I just don't expect there to be a spot for Plan B guys at this point. There is no need for any more filler this year, just quality. I'm not really sure what the coaches think of Gilliland at this point. I believe he was injured this year as well which always puts a player's status up in the air.

It's going to be an interesting couple of weeks though for everyone, as always, right up until and though LOI day.

If they have 23 spots available today and 28 commits, then the staff is planning to run off 5 guys that are on scholly today? Wow.

Either 5 more from attrition, or more grayshirts, or factor in the unexpected (unable to qualify due to grades, etc.).

Many guys with a couple years of eligibility remaining are seeing the writing on the wall, and if they ever want to see the field it will be at a different school.

I'm a bit surprised we aren't seeing some attrition at CU right now from the large 2007 class of O-Linemen. There's some guys from the class that are getting buried on the depth chart right about now.

Gilliland has been re-confirmed according to Scout as a UW signee.
