Is Colorado making a mistake by not offering this young man?

Perhaps. They need to be a little more cutthroat with the kickers IMO. If Jameson Davis cannot play this year, it is time to part ways.

It's not cutting him, look at the situation with Justin Nonu. Same deal.

Seconded. We can't afford to be using a scholarship on a kicker who is unable to kick.

I agree, we don't need 15 kickers on the roster, especially ones who are unable to kick.

CU really needs to keep the # of kickers on scholarship to 3 or less IMO.

Re: '10 CO K Kip Smith (Committed to Minnesota)

Kip Smith showed early interest in Colorado, but committed to Minnesota when it looked like CU wouldn't come through with a scholly. Same with Justin Castor (committed to Kansas). There's a whole season for him (or one of them) to show he's the best in Colorado, and a whole season for CU to evaluate the current kickers to see if there is a need.

Kids can change their minds, but CU would have to demonstrate interest first.

Seems we are a little hard on Jameson when he hasn't played much in the scrimmages this year and we don't know how he's doing. With anyone coming back from surgery/injury, shouldn't we give them the benefit of actually playing before assuming the worst? The official word is he's doing well, just reserving his knees as long as possible for games, and limiting practice reps.

Davis is no longer on the team, so I would say the coaches will give young Mr. Smith a long look.

Coming from Adam at rivals. Sounds like he will be staying in Boulder, but will not be part of the team. I cannot say I'm surprised at all by this revelation.

Yep. I think this is a situation where the coaches and Davis sat down for a long talk about his future, both eventually deciding it was best for him to give up football. Life is too short for a kid to be having microfracture surgery in his early 20s and then trying to come back from that.

I'm officially convinced after reading this in Kip's ESPN 'On the Trail' update:

    Kip Smith sets state record
Under Armour All-American and Minnesota pledge Kip Smith set a Colorado record on Friday night when he made a 67 yard field goal on a free kick.

    :wow:

Very impressive. But what does this mean? He wants to try again with a 1" tee, a holder and wind? What was he using if not a 1" tee?
What makes the kick "oddball" ... just the distance or am I missing something?

Regardless, applause to Kip for a new state record.

a free kick is usually a punt, yes?

Re: '10 CO K Kip Smith (Committed to Minnesota)

    From wikipedia:

    Free kick

After a safety, the team that gave up the points kicks off to the other team from its own 20-yard line (in American football) or 25-yard line (in Canadian football.) This is termed a free kick: the kicking team has the option of employing a punt, a drop kick, or a place kick from a teammate's hold. Unlike the kickoff, a kicking tee may not be used (NFL only, college kickers have the option of using a tee on the safety kick); however, punts are allowed, unlike on kickoffs. A punt is the most commonly chosen option, whereas a drop kick is virtually unheard-of in modern football.

Re: '10 CO K Kip Smith (Committed to Minnesota)

You are confusing it with a free kick after a safety which can be from placement or a punt, kicking teams decision.

Odd rarely used rule of football is that a team may choose after making a fair catch to attempt a FG from placement from the spot of the fair catch. The kick gets to set the ball up on a tee and there is no rush.

Does Kip's quote imply he is using a 2-inch tee? (Since he wants to try it with a 1" that is ruled out.)

I have no idea on what is currently allowed as a tee in HS football.

Pretty sure they can use 1" or 2" in Colorado high school.

The better kickers will start kicking off the ground to prepare for college, but HS coaches encourage them to use tees for more distance and height in games.

Happened last year, a UM kicker commit left for Penn State.

So what you really mean is not that I'm confusing the free kick, but that I stated the version of its usage almost 100% of the time. Because in 40+ years of watching football I of course knew of but have never seen the fair catch version. Are you saying that's what he tried here?
