Matt Farris is a late emerging prospect without a scholarship offer so far. Colorado is looking closely at him, as are Wisconsin, Ole Miss, Oregon State, Cal, Vanderbilt and Duke. He's a full qualifier with a 3.5 GPA.

Farris finished his senior season with 145 tackles for a 12-2 conference championship team.

CU has not offered, but we have scheduled him for an official visit to Boulder this weekend (December 11th) according to a new Scout article. Also from the article:

"I'm looking for a place where I can get a good education and also a good atmosphere to play football and have the best competition," Farris said.

Former CU tight end Paul Creighton, who now serves as a graduate assistant coach, has been the primary recruiting contact for Farris. He said he Creighton have developed a solid relationship and are eager to meet face to face.

Farris said he has no reservations about attending college so far from home.

"No sir, wherever I can get the best education and play the best football," Farris said.

Tom Lemming over at MaxPreps had a write-up on Farris that appears to be based on a pre-senior year evaluation:

Matt Farris Football Athlete Notes - Northern Guilford High School 09-10

Lemming Notes: He is not an obvious difference maker at the MLB position, however, this young man can play the game. On Film–He is a sure tackler and a hard hitter who plays the game with a lot of heart. He is very coachable and quick to the ball with a keen knowledge of the game. Stats–He recorded 80 tackles, 1 sack, 15 tackles for losses, and 1 caused fumble as a junior. Other Sports–He has thrown the shot put over 38' and the discus over 105' in track. Grades–His GPA is 3.5. Benches 250. Favorite Schools–NORTHWESTERN, DUKE, VA TECH, SC, and NC STATE.

    Nice find, AJ.

Not a lot of film to judge by. My read from that small bit is that Farris is a very disciplined linebacker who doesn't get caught out of position when flowing to the ball, doesn't get his legs crossed or his shoulders out of square, is willing to take on blockers, delivers a good form tackle and has a nice burst once he's got a lane to the football he can attack through. Solid football player. A lot is going to depend on the eyeball test and tale of the tape & scale this weekend.

Farris left without an offer from CU, but was told he'd know within the next week or so after the coaches evaluate some more senior film. (Sounds like there is someone else we've got ranked higher and we didn't want to give Farris one of those worthless non-commitable offers so many programs give out like candy.)

    Per Scout:

"It felt like a perfect fit," he said. "I could really see myself going out through the Thunder Chute with all the blasting music and then actually going out on the field and playing in front of all the 50,000 fans."

According to a new Rivals interview, Farris still is without a D1 offer. He was very impressed by CU and is waiting to see what will happen.

CU told him we are only taking 2 more linebackers this cycle. My guess is that we would take the 1st 2 to commit from the group of Hemschoot, Terrell and Benson. Palelei may also be in that group but there's a chance he's in the 2nd tier or that he's a silent commit. Hard to get a read on him. Matt Farris seems to be a backup plan along with Keith Smith.

Do not understand why we are only looking to take three LBs in this class after taking two in 2009 and only one LB remaining from the 2008 class. Six over three classes seems a bit thin, doesn't it?

Seems very thin to me. Nobriga could end up at DE, too, so that would be 5 over 3 classes. Makes me think that we've already got 2 committed and we don't know about someone. Palelei would be my guess and that he (and others) are just waiting to make sure that Cabral comes back next year before making an announcement.

I think there's got to be a couple commits here. Also could mean Mahnke is a LB now?

I'd love to see Mahnke make that switch. I really believe that he'd be excellent next year if we used him as a weakside OLB on passing downs. If it could work, it makes sense from a numbers standpoint, too. We've got 3 scholarship safeties in the junior class but only 1 linebacker. This would balance things out very nicely.

Mahnke takes horrible angles. I don't know - I'd rather see our LBs on the field next year as opposed to him: Rippy, Webb, Major, Sipili, Beatty. I think Mahnke is slow, so fine, move him to LB, however, I'd rather not see the kid on the field until he shows marked improvement. He has potential...but there were a lot of frustrating plays from him, as well as the entire team.

No one is suggesting Mahnke has been inserted as a starter. We have more safeties than LB's and Mahnke is a step slow imo. His angles is something that young players need to adjust to - speed of the college game. He played great at times, and then would have a real boner play in coverage. I think he's got a good nose for the ball and is a big time hitter. He still has a redshirt year there as well.
