This kid is getting some love from ESPN. They rate him the #5 Center in the nation.

He's a LANL kid so I'm pretty sure he'll come to CU given the list of schools he has on his list. UNM and both NMSU are struggling this year and aren't anywhere near CU academically and being a LANL kid I'm sure he's heard about CU his whole life.

I hope your right. I heard he's a heavy lean to UNM.

Thanks for the update. Rep sent.

Re: '10 NM C Alex Kirk

Most people that are LANLites (I work at the "other" national lab) don't have strong ties to NM since they try really hard to recruit their people from across the US. I'm only speculating that his parents work at the labs, because people don't live in Los Alamos unless they work at the labs. It's expensive, the culture is very outdoorsy, it's surprisingly very liberal (well, for being part of the NWC and for NM)....hmmm, sounds like another place we all know (and some love ). Everyone I met at CU from NM was from Los Alamos, except for me (my company paid for my grad school). Trust me, this is no coincidence.

The way I see it, the major advantages that UNM has over CU is (1) strong fan support and the Pit is certainly one of the best places to play at in the US (2) facilities (3) a HC that went 24-9 in his first season with 3 more years guaranteed, with an NIT bid and (4) tradition.

The MWC, however, is no Big 12 when it comes to the level of competition. Yeah it makes getting to the tourney or NIT harder, but the best usually want to play against the best.

I know first hand that you'd get a better collegiate experience at CU rather than NMSU (sadly) and UNM. Both schools are commuter schools and have no where near the atmosphere of CU. CU is certainly a "magical" place and I only wish I could have spent 4 years there, instead of only 1.5 years.

For me, I wish the kid chooses CU and if not CU then NMSU (my ugrad alma mater). **** the Lobos.

Kirk's dominance helps Los Alamos crush Rams in first round of tourney
Tommy Trujillo | The New Mexican
    12/18/2008 - 12/19/08

JACONA — Even with a sparse crowd scattered throughout Ben Luján Gymnasium on Thursday, there was much more interest in an lopsided boys basketball game between Los Alamos and Cimarron.

Alex Kirk, the 6-foot-11 junior forward, is a legitimate NCAA Division I prospect who has drawn a lot of interest, including at The University of New Mexico.

Against an overmatched Rams team, Kirk was all that and more.

Re: '10 NM C Alex Kirk

I'm not arguing your info on LANL and CU, but I knew a LOT of kids from New Mexico NOT from Los Alamos. I interned in Albuquerque my soph year in college, and NM bball is pretty big down there, even though the Pit isn't filled up EVERY night with raucous fans. People love bball down there, and I think if there's a rumor that he's leaning towards UNM, then he probably has some local allegiance to the Lobos.

I agree - UNM is an ugly piece of concrete ****. It's really not a pretty campus, and the area in Albuquerque it's in isn't that nice either. However, due to the nuclear tests that went on during the cold war in NM, there is lingering strong science at NMSU and UNM...I don't think they approach CU, but they aren't atrocious either.

I just want CU to get a big...we have lots of 2-3, but no big...

This kids stock is about to go through the roof. He's getting looks from everyone in the Pac-10, and Gonzaga.

Doesn't bode well for us. People that work at LANL are very familiar with the UC system so if Cal comes a knocking.... Either he stays home or he goes to the best academic school he gets offered a scholarship to.

Bz is going to have to recruit his butt off.

based on your prior comment that you heard he's a heavy UNM lean, I don't think that this kid is leaving NM. I wish he came to CU though - he'd be my top target if I was Bz.

this is post 800 for me...how are some of you guys at 4000+ posts? :wow::smile2:

There's nothing like Allbuffs, but there are a number of forums where CU fans talk about different things, some focus on football, others are more general. Some are premium (you have to pay to read/post) and some are free.

What did you have in mind?

    A recruit’s busy summer

    By Jeff Faraudo
Friday, June 12th, 2009 at 10:31 pm in Basketball, Recruiting.
The sagging economy has prompted many families to schedule “stay-cations” this summer, but the best high school basketball prospects cannot afford to be homebodies.

Consider the summer schedule of Alex Kirk, a 6-10, 225-pound center from Los Alamos (N.M.) High. The senior-to-be, on the wish list of Cal among perhaps two dozen schools, has an exhausting schedule, according to Alan Kirk, his dad and coach.

Kirk already has played between 50 and 60 games since the end of his high school season, including two trips each to Houston and Dallas, and one each to Atlanta, Minneapolis, Phoenix, Virginia and Los Angeles.

I had thought the kid had totally dismissed CU from any contention before. This article was great news imo. Still in it!

Highly touted Los Alamos center stands with some of best
James Barron | The New Mexican
    7/20/2009

Alex Kirk is no Harrison Barnes, and he's not about to complain.

Kirk, a 6-foot-10 senior-to-be at Los Alamos High School, is the most visible prep boys basketball player in the state. It's not just because he's the only 6-10 player in the state.

Kirk is one of the most sought-after college recruits in the nation, much like Barnes, a 6-8 forward from Ames, Iowa. But that is the extent of their similarities.

Kirk, rated as one of the nation's top-10 centers by Scout.com and ESPN.com, is courting interest from schools like Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA, New Mexico, Oklahoma State and Minnesota.

Barnes, who is considered one of the top-three recruits of the Class of 2010, is being chased by Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Oklahoma and Kentucky.

When Kirk selects his school — he hasn't narrowed his list of about 20 schools, but he would like to decide on one before November's national signing day — it will make waves across the state and at his school-to-be.

Re: '10 NM C Alex Kirk

WHAT A GREAT SOUNDING ARTICLE FOR US! I know he doesn't say any schools, but his criteria seems to make CU stronger of candidate.

I always do find it interesting how close the HS bball players in the nation are to each other. From AAU and all of tournaments around, a lot of NBA players know each other well before playing with/against one another. I find it interesting how well recruited these kids are starting from seventh grade.

his comment about not wanting to be recruited over is weird. also, if Harris-Tunks comes in, has a good FR year (avg 10 and 8) then i'd bet we're out of it.
