I know for a fact that this kicker is interested in CU.
I won`t lie, his 1st choice is USC, but CU is right there if that doesn`t happen.

He was the California Maxpreps 1st Team All-State Kicker this past season. He is also the Maxpreps 1st team All-American Soph Kicker, as well as the EA Sports/ESPN All-American Soph Kicker.
He scored 90 points in his first season as a Varsity starter, and had 54 touchbacks on kickoffs, with a few going through the uprights.
He kicks off the ground very well already. He has hit 60 yarders off the ground, and he hit hit a 70 yarder off a 1" block in practice.

    He`s 6`0", weighs 175, benches 285, runs a 4.6 40, with a 3.3 GPA.......and he`s still growing.

He`s only 16 and has two years of high school left, but he could be a D1 kicker right now.

    Re: JUCOs this class

Tell Van Ginkel should get to CU's kicking camp next year in June, that will help get him seen. Plus Paul Assad, who runs it, has reputation as a very good technique coach. (Of course, so does Kohl's kicking who Van Ginkel has worked with already.)

But in the kicking/punting stable we've got:
    DiLallo (Punter) graduates this year.

Goodman has two years (right? he did a year at Wyo, sat out a year, and played a year.) Primarily Field Goal Kicker.

Davis has one year down, so he has four years to play three. Primarily Kickoffs.

And Grossnickle just on board has five years to play four. Had success in high school as both kicker and punter; don't know yet what CU will do with him.

Can't say whether Ryan Aweida and Justin Mihalcin will end up being factors or not yet. Far as I know, both are more kicker than punter.

In two years, I'd bet CU would have to be looking for another kicker or combo guy. That's assuming Grossnickle handles punting.

As far as his other choice, USC has been taking older guys as K/P for the past few years, they just took a top JC kicker this year (Jake Harfman), and they've got a ton of walkons (including one who left a Cornshucker scholly to walk-on to USC and hasn't kicked since.)

Yeah, I can`t understand why Congdon would leave after starting for two years as a true freshman and soph.

I can`t find a roster with all of next years kickers on it.

How many will still be here for the 2011 season?

USC's kicker died in a sad accident. He was talented and the job was up for grabs; Congdon thought "why not me?"

Here's the roster for this season:
    http://www.cubuffs.com/SportSelect....00&SORT_ORDER=6&Q_SEASON=2009&PRINTABLE_PAGE=

But I listed them for you in the post above.
DiLallo, Goodman, Davis, Grossnickle, Aweida and Mihalcin. We also have a pretty good punter in Darrell Scott, but general feeling is we'd rather not use him.

    Fall 2011?

DiLallo and Goodman should both be graduated by then or have used all eligibility.

Fall 2011 could be Davis' last season (unless he has a medical redshirt and gains one more year of eligibility, but that's just an "if" not a prediction. He's had some knee surgery, but latest report is he's good to go this year.)

Grossnickle is a freshman this year, in 2011 he will be playing either his second or third season, depending if he sees the field THIS season, '09, which is a big unknown.

Aweida and Mihalcin are walk-ons this season, Aweida transferred after two years of soccer elsewhere, not sure about eligibility after a transfer. (My guess is he won't be at CU in 2011, should have graduated, but I could be wrong.) I think Mihalcin is a freshman transfer, so he probably has one year less eligibility than Grossnickle. Really not sure, but I'd think if Mihalcin stays on the team, that 2011 would be his last season of eligibility.

"He`s also the starting QB, and he completed about 80% of his passes with an arm that is about as strong as his leg."

Wtf? Can he run? We need someone to take over for D.Scott so he can punt.

Re: '11 CA K Jake Van Ginkel

I know the reputation of Kohl's Kicking, good outfit.

Scroll down to the class of 2011
    Under "TOP PROSPECT VIDEOS "
and you can see Jake Van Ginkel in action.

    http://www.kohlskicking.com/kohls_coach_recruiting_info.php#RANKINGS

He did well at their California camp (see stats here) but Kohl's national invite camp is usually in August and that's when the top kickers go through identical drills for three days and the top kickers emerge nationally.

Don't know if he punts, all the highlights are kicks. (That doesn't mean anything at this point, just what was videotaped.)

Wow, you brought up a point I had never considered.

Can an athlete play one sport for a few years, and still have full eligibilty in another sport?

It would seem that once your clock starts, you have five years and that`s it.

    Anyone know the rule?

Ps. How do you adjust the clock on this site to your time zone?

    Thanks.

Re: '11 CA K Jake Van Ginkel

The reason I'm not sure is he was at University of Denver, a private University, where he started on the soccer team as a freshman and sophomore. However, I don't think they give soccer scholarships (or very few) since hockey is their main men's sport.

If he wasn't on scholarship, I'm not sure if that changes anything in terms of eligibility. I really don't know. But so far Aweida hasn't knocked the scholly players off their starting spots, so we don't know whether he'll get much playing time or not. We'll know more after all the kickers start practicing together in August.

As far as the clock question, look at the top bars for "User CP" - control panel. I think the answer you seek is there.

Re: '11 CA K Jake Van Ginkel

The clock starts for all sports once you've played in any, however, you do have 5 years of eligibility to play 4 in any given sport, so you could play 4 years of one sport (assuming no redshirt) and play the 5th in another sport.

Greg Paulus is a perfect example - he played 4 years of basketball at Duke and now he's transferred to Syracuse where he is eligible for 1 season of football.

Seems wierd that you can transfer without penalty to play another sport, but the NCAA never makes sense to me.

Re: '11 CA K Jake Van Ginkel

    That is a strange rule.

Remember that there is no such thing as a four year scholarship agreement. The contract is always for just a single year and must be renewed each year.

Could you imagine a Bo Jackson type playing football one year at USC, playing basebal the next year at CSUF, then playing football the next season at CU, then the next season playing baseball at Texas, then finishing his college career at Auburn playing football?

Re: '11 CA K Jake Van Ginkel

One huge advantage at CU over a lot of other schools is that football players can have a great experience as players with the team and their coaches and play in a great atmosphere. Folsom is about half the size of the Coliseum or the Rose bowl but the fans are right on top of the field and much more a part of the game than in the two I mentioned prior.

At the same time Boulder is unique in that when the players are away from the team they don't draw a lot of attention and get to just be normal college students. A lot of guys believe this really added to the quality of their college experience. As your son is not lineman sized or anything of that nature he will truly be able take advantage of both worlds, stand out on the football field and fit in as a student.

Yeah, it's tough to deal with an awful year both punting and placekicking when you're known for having the top kicking unit in the Big 12 year after year.

We're definitely going to need use a scholarship on a kicker for 2011. Pretty clear we're not offering this year since we let Kip Smith go to Minnesota without an offer and we haven't offered Justin Castor (looks like we'll let him go to Wyoming without a fight).

Re: '11 CA K Jake Van Ginkel

Even if he gets an offer from U$C he would be wise to consider going to boulder. He should put in a call to Mason Crosby about what it is like to be the Buffs kicker. He could also contact Kevin Eberhart who even after spending four years on the bench (backing up Crosby) before he got his chance has had very positive things to say about the school and his experiences there.

CU has had a long history of both PKs and Punters earning major honors and having success in the pros. If Jake is as good as he looks to be he could find himself on the field quickly at a place he will love for the rest of his life.

Jake had a great start to the season for Upland High last Friday night.

He kicked three FG`s (35, 44, 20), was 2-2 on PAT`s, and had one punt for 54 yards that was fielded on the one yard line.
He scored 11 points in a 23-8 win.

Re: '11 CA K Jake Van Ginkel

We won our semi-final against Chino Hills, 13-7.

It was a defensive battle, and Jake helped out with booming punts that pinned Chino Hills deep.
His first three punts were 54, 56, and 53 yards long, and downed or faircaught at the 5, 2, and 10 yard lines.
The 56 yarder was downed at the 2 yard line. Three plays later, it was 4th and 11 from the one yard line, forcing the Chino Hills punter to get off a quick punt, which was fielded at the Chino Hills 38 and returned for a TD.

He`s been pinning teams inside their own 10 yard line all season long.
That has helped our defense hold teams to an average of 11 points per game this season, and 10 points per game in the playoffs.

We play our league rival, Los Osos, in the Championship game this Friday night.
When we played them in a league game six weeks ago, we handed them their first ever shut-out in a 17-0 victory.
Jake had four punts that were downed inside the 10 yard line that game.

He`s 16-20 on FG`s, which is tied for first in California, and one behind the national leader.
He`ll have a chance to get the lead in the championship game.
