    Junior Year Stats:

    88 tackles
    (73 solo)
    19 sacks
3 pass deflections; 5 fumble recoveries; 3 forced fumbles; 1 blocked punt; 2 blocked field goals

Greg Biggins has posted in his ESPN recruiting blog that CU is the first program to offer:

"I just sent out my tape a few weeks ago and got my first offer from Colorado," said Kelley. "I'm talking with coach [Brian] Cabral and I'm hoping to visit the campus over spring break. I can't wait to see the campus and meet the coaches in person."

"I don't have any favorites right now, but Colorado offering me early definitely means a lot to me," said Kelley.

he seems to have an incredible ability to find the gap shoot through it and find the ball. I dont know if I have ever seen that before.

He looks like he has a great motor, looking forward to seeing what he does his senior year. Always good to be the first to offer a guy!

Odd that Florida offers, but none of the west coast schools. Maybe he has no interest staying on the west coast.

Latest Scout update (Florida site) has him visiting for Junior Day. He continues to gain more interest from Pac-12 schools. Does not seem like distance will be a factor and he is open to lots of schools right now.

Kelley is starting to get more attention. I hope us being first will make a big difference, a good visit this weekend would not hurt either. This staff has been in early on several good prospects.

Love this kid. Would continue a proud tradition of great LB's here at CU, especially OLB's. Chad Brown part II? He would look great lining up in a black and gold #11 jersey.

Committing this summer and the Buffs are definitely in the mix here. Would be a huge get for us.

As I told Adam, I'm glad he did the follow-up with him. Great prospect who was kind of out of my mind before because of all the other stuff going on. But he is one of my favorite prospects this cycle. Big time player.

I really want Kyle, probably as much as I want Yuri Wright. The dude just looks like the kind of player that will disrupt and make game changing plays like it's no big deal.

Is he an OLB or a DE though?

That question is the reason he has been under-recruited. Perfect 3-4 OLB, though. I still have a feeling that we're moving in that direction. Our offer list strongly suggests it despite the official statements that have come out.

Yep totally agree that we're headed for a 3-4 in the future, I'm thinking the staff just knows that right now we don't have the personnel to run it.

I'm probably biased in my infatuation for Kelley, but he looks fast enough and instinctive enough to play 4-3 OLB, but I'd hate to see those pass rushing skills be wasted by putting him back in coverage.

I actually think Kelley could fit well as a 4-3 DE when it is all said and done. I think a redshirt year would do wonders for him.

Football tends to be a copycat sport, right now the hot trends that everybody are copying are the spread offenses and the 3-4 defense. By schools adopting these concepts now they are forcing themselves to compete for the limited talent that best suits the concept. They are also faced with playing a scheme that is what their opponents are used to seeing in practice all week.

I like that the Buffs are looking to play more of a pro set offense. Teams aren't going to be used to seeing a tight end who is a threat to line up on the tackle and be both a blocker and a reciever who can punish in the middle of the field. Just as important I hope that the Buffs stay with a 4-3 defense. It will give a look that teams aren't used to seeing and will require them to quickly adjust their blocking schemes to the different alignment.

Bring in a guy like Kelley who can go after the passer blitzing from the LB position and teams may have some real issues accounting for him. The Buffs have enough pro coaching experience to have seen how zone blitzes are effectively run and putting 4 down linement and a blitzing LB into the rush against a the spread may result in destroying some offenses.

Everything this spring points to a 4-3 in the fall. I think Brown co-architected what CU has run the last 5 years.

When I see that 350 pound Nose Guard sign with CU, I'll buy into the 3-4. For now I'm thinking it's an athletic 4 man front, that allows us to drop DL into coverages and bring guys from anywhere on the blitz.

I could be wrong, but I thought the 3-4 defense was quite rare in college football? NFL it certainly is the most prevalent defense, though.

A lot of teams are moving to pure 3-4s in college ball, a lot more play what they call a 4-3 but is actually a 3-4 with one of the DEs actually playing more of a LB than a pure DE position. This often includes standing up at the LOS, playing off the tackle either wider, a little off the LOS or both. We did some of this last year with Cunningham lined up on the nose and Pericek lined up on the tackle with a smaller DE outside of him. When Hartigan was in the game he more often resembled a dedicated blitzing LB than a pure DE.

What teams are moving to pure 3-4? I can only think of Georgia and Cal that have really moved to it recently.

I agree there are plenty of teams that run variations of a 3-4 on passing downs, although I'd argue that it moreso resembles a 3-3-5 or a 4-2-5 than a 3-4.
