Report from the recent PIAA/Junior Rank football camp (Scout):

Just as important to Junior Rank is unearthing talent that hasn't quite bubbled to the surface of the recruiting process.

Kalei Auelua was such a talent. The 6-foot-1.5, 240-pound defensive end from the St. Louis School, came to Junior Rank with scholarship offers, but not much more in terms of recruiting cache. That should change after Auelua (pronounced ah-way-LU-ah) earned the Maxwell Football Club Camp MVP award.

"Honestly, I had no clue about him," Berry said of Auelua. "He wasn't on any of the lists that circulate. It took all of 10 minutes for the coaches to go, 'Wait a minute - who is this guy, and why is he destroying guys that we know are D1 talents?' It's a testament to him. You can't find everybody; you can only help the kids you can see. And we're really glad we got a chance to see him."

Same high school as Juda Parker and Paulay Asiata. Hopefully we got a pipeline going.

Looks good, needs to get lower when he tackles people, though. He almost took a few heads off, as much as I enjoy a tough player, 15 yard penalties aren't my favorite.

What would you guys say is the level of competition in Hawaii? Better than CO? Worse than AZ/WA?

CO has more talent, but it's less concentrated and we have over twice the population. HI gives you a ton of bang for the buck when looking for OLs, DLs, LBs and Ss.

You can't teach attitude. In Hawaii, attitude grows on trees.

Met BJ Beatty's cousins at teriyaki on the North Shore in Hale'iwa one day - great kids but woldn't want to **** with them. Kids form Wai'anae are absolute maulers and I haven't even started to talk about the private schools yet. (St. Louis, Iolani (there ya go Snow) and Punahou)

On pure attitude and heart, I'd take a Hawaiian kid (even haoles learn about it if military brats) over a WA/CO/AZ kid anyday. They're spoiled on the mainland.

High school football on the islands is a huge deal. They take it very seriously. I doubt the coaching and facilities are up to what you'd find on the mainland, but the attitude is 100% take no prisoners play like your hair is on fire every down.

UW is getting quite a haul this year. I doubt we're out of it though. The key is to get a visit. If we can do that, it's anybody's game.

I would LOVE to see Embree and co. stick it to UW and ransack their commits again this offseason. Let's get that rivalry JUMP-STARTED again.

Really? We get two of his teammates and can't get him? This sucks. I liked this kid, we better be able to steal him away from the Huskies.

Hopefully we are still in the mix for the two DE's from Punahou.

One of the players I think we may be able to flip between now and February. Would be nice if we could get some of the Hawaiian players to the game when we are out there.

I think DE recruiting is suffering a little because of Kanavis' coaching inexperience

Could be. But we brought in a really good DE class to close 2011 recruiting.
