This kid could be huge. There was a buzz about him when he was in 7-8 grade in Denver, but the word was that he was a huge prick. So, his family had him attend a private school in MD, and after his first year of HS, he is an elite prospect for his class (he did go to Montbello for a year too). Yes, projecting kids that much into the future can be misleading, but still...this could be our next Chauncey. Hopefully he has matured though - Chaunc was/is a great person in addition to being great on the floor.

some of you may remember an article in the Denver Post. I don't remember if I can paste links, so I'll just tell you to google Chris Thomas Denver basketball and the post article should come up.

Colorado was not always on his schools of interest - it now is.

Chris Thomas - 2013 Blue Chip Prospect

The 2013 prospect is expected to be at least a 4* prospect and will likely be a 5*. He grew up in Denver and maintains ties, playing his AAU with the Colorado Hawks traveling team.

He just made a decision to come back to Pac-12 country to complete his prep years, transferring from Washington D.C.'s Princeton Day Academy to Phoenix's Westwind Prep.

All this and the quote below from a new Rivals article.

I've heard that we're a real long shot here and that there may be reasons he doesn't want to come back to the Denver area. Anyone know whether we're in the running on this one?

that's great that Thomas is back in the West...although I think Phoenix is an odd destination for him.

As for UA, they are making noise recruiting. Their backcourt is slowly living up to the PG U moniker they give themselves. Watch out how they recruit LJ Rose, a top 2012 PG, and Shabazz Muhammed, one of THE 2012 guys. I don't think UA lands Shabazz, and I'm not sure how they sit with Rose. They Nick Johnson this year, and he'll stick around. Bazz will most likely be a one-and-done player, and I think Rose will stay two years.

I doubt UA's filled backcourt will dissuade a top talent like Thomas, particularly because some of them will leave early. However, we can sell playing time.

I've been trying to keep tabs on this kid - I think we do have a profile of him somewhere in the archives. I've been hearing about him since he was in eighth grade, but the rumor was he was a punk with bad influences. Unfortunately, as much as him being from Denver can help CU, it can also hurt CU due to his problems while growing up in Denver (family may want to keep him away??...) It does seem like he's matured a lot since he left town

Found the profile thread. I'll merge the new stuff in and then build in some of the recruiting site info and youtube vids.

PremierBall.com had a great interview with Thomas back in October '10: http://www.premierball.com/questions-answers-w-2013-chris-thomas/

Here's a bit of the interview:

    1. Chris Where are you originally from and what made you come out to Maryland to play your hoops and go to school?

I’m originally from Denver, CO. I came to Maryland to change my ways and become a better student and a better basketball player. It was hard for me to focus at home so my family and coach sent me to the prep school here in Maryland. I’m glad they did.

    9. Will you be playing for the Colorado Hawks AAU team in the spring/summer?

Yes. I’m always happy when I play with the Hawks. They are my friends and the HAWKS is home for me.

    10. Give us your the first five college schools that pop in your head.

Arizona, Kentucky, Tennessee, Kansas, Xavier, and Colorado are the first ones I can think of. There are a lot of colleges out there looking at me and I really haven’t narrowed it down to five or even 10. I’m a sophomore so right now I’m just trying to make the grades I need to get into any college……..lol

I really wouldn't put alot of stock into the schools he listed - just means they're interested. "Off the top of your head", and he makes it clear that he's only a soph - hasn't narrowed anything down. I don't know how Xavier got in there, but don't sleep on Xavier. They've always been a solid program, and they keep finding quality coaches. If Mack stays as their coach, they can become a serious player down the road. I have always liked Xavier - they're good, but no one seems to think of them for some reason.

I like this discussion on Thomas though - analyzing a quote about schools off the top of your head. I'm used to reading this stuff on in our football forum or Duke bball forums. It shows that CU is making some steps in recruiting - we're going after some bigger players.

Okay, so he visited UA yesterday and absolutely loved it - no surprise. Cats fans think he's a lock for them.

...but that's odd, their head coach is leaving to go to Maryland, where Thomas recently was in school. I think he may be Miller's first big recruit at UMD.

Those close to him will likely advise not to come back to the Denver metro. He was running with a bad crowd here. If you can't recruit mom, you don't get the kid. I don't like our chances here. Of course, Cal signed Martin in football a couple years ago, so you never know.

He's leaving Westwind Prep and will play next year at South Kent in Connecticut. It will be his 4th different school in 4 years. Having him back east probably hurts our already slim chances of getting him and is certainly is a big blow to Arizona.

2013 is real deep...Thomas' ranking is still really solid especially when compared to the competition. I'm still putting out hope that he comes back home, and he stays two years.

Reportedly the kid's grades are in a bad situation and a few schools have backed off. The Buffs are still going hard after him, so while it won't be easy, it is possible.

Kentucky does well with guys like this. They'll tell him he's 1-and-done. That means he just has to take some basic courses in the fall to be eligible, then enroll in some spring classes he can blow off and later drop once he declares for the draft. In fact, he can even get ahead of the game by taking a couple classes over the summer before his freshman year to make that fall requirement exceptionally light.

    Profit.

Don't think it's going to matter one bit what we think, doubt very much he comes to Boulder.

On one hand I would love to see us get a kid with this kind of talent, on the other hand I have no interest in a kid with this kind of mercinary attitude. Somebody is going to offer him a promise to be a star for a year and go to the NBA. He probably is that talented but he would go against everything that Tad stands for as a coach and what he is trying to sell kids as his system.

Not a problem if a kid wants to go to the pros and is good enough but he should be a part of the team while he is here. Burks left early and it was the right move (except for a little thing about a lock-out) but his attitude towards the team is shown by the fact that since he isn't playing pro ball right now he spends as much time in Boulder with his teammates as he does anywhere. He also sacrificed his stats last year for the good of the team.

If we can get star quality players who are willing to be a part of the team then I am all for it but the guys who just want to come in to make a highight video I would hesitate about. Don't want somebody coming in, screwing up team chemistry, screwing up APR, taking us out of our system, and walking the second he gets a chance.

Schools like Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, etc are better prepared to handle these guys because they have other NBA type players to kind of put them in their place and another NBA type guy waiting to come in and replace them if they get out of line.

We shouldn't worry about not getting him. I played on the Colorado Hawks for a few years. Clearly, he can't be that good.

I played for the Titans back in high school, we were nothing special and just starting up back then, the premier AAU teams are the Chaos, if your not playing for them, you probably not gonna get noticed

This is Thomas' most recent mixtape from over the summer

In my opinion, I would love to have a player of Thomas' caliber. I have seen him play a few times in person and came away impressed with his explosiveness and when he gets rolling can be almost unguardable. As mentioned before his immaturity is an issue and that honestly can't be understated. When the score/calls are not going his way his poor attitude shines through no matter how far away you are watching from and leads him to start forcing plays. I don't want to say this won't change, he is stiill young, but it is still concerning. Either way, it is great for a CO kid to get some recognition for basketball. It will be interesting to see what Boyle does with his one schollie remaining.

Anyone have a feeling what our chances are on this kid? I would be inclined to say this would be a stretch, but do we have a inside line somewhere?
