Back in 2011, Kohl's had the following to say:

Diego is a kicker with a 5.0 star kick off leg, lives in Mexico, ball explodes off his foot, his FG at times are very solid, he is still working on becoming more consistent, great get for a college needing a KO guy, eligible to sign in Feb. of 2012, did very well on KO at the National Scholarship Camp, email is raulgonzz@perezgongora.com, school is ITESM-CEGL, lives in Guadalupe, Nuevo Leon, legit kicker who has come to 2 Kohl's camps in the US

They ranked him the #1 Kicker prospect and #5 Punter prospect for the class of 2011.

Chris Sailer has the following to say about him (quote from Chris from link in OP):

Diego is one of the most talented players that I have ever seen come through Chris Sailer Kicking. He has a huge leg, does all 3 at the highest level, and is very strong mentally. Has all the tools to dominate our college game at every position. Plays football in Mexico and should have NCAA eligibility. If you needs someone to step in and play, do your research on Diego now. OFFER NOW!!!

Why is he designated a "transfer?"

I don't know. Signing players from outside the US is unusual. Might be that he didn't fit into a standard category. It may also have something to do with him graduating high school in 2011. I don't know if there's an impact to his eligibility. Sailer said there wasn't, but also had an email link to check/verify eligibility.

He may be going to school at a university in Mexico. Don't have a clue how this would impact his eligibility. I'm thinking that they count it on his five year academic clock but not against his four years of playing eligibility.

If in fact he attended one year of University as a full time student, then his eligibility clock has started and he has 5 years to play 4. So technically, if he'd be a transfer student with 4 left to play 4.

Well. They clearly weren't limiting themselves in a search for a kicker.

Don't think we're gonna have to be worrying about many kick returns, he can kick the **** out of the ball.

Welp, you have to appreciate the staff's ability to think outside the box. We have issues, and instead of ignoring them when plan a doesn't pan out, they pull something like this out of left field.

If this kid is a good as Sailer claims, I am psyched. Kicking should always be a weapon at CU and it hasn't been for a long time.

Looks like a good pick up if true. (over protective mod edit) If he is successful (or not), maybe he could help connect with the Mexican fan base at CU.

I still haven't found anywhere that we are reporting we offered or that he has committed.

Maybe you've been looking in the wrong places? Or perhaps you are the subject of a practical joke that all of the rest of us are in on...

Apparently one or the other. We are not even listing it on AB as an offer or commit, Rivals doesn't list him as a commit and there have been no #CUin14 posts. Of course on the latter, it could be 2013 since he may already be eligible. But if that were the case, he would have been able to commit already and no need for secrecy. Things that make you go hmmm.

Wouldn't he have a "sit out" year in residence IF he accepts CU's offer and have three left to play three? (And do keep in mind, we are not the only school out there looking for specialists.)

Thanks to others for pointing me in the right direction. Sounds like he is probably going to be on campus and eligible to play this year.

Given the relatively low number of touchbacks and long FG last year, this could be a good get for us. I actually have never understood the low respect kickers get including on AB WRT schollies. If the guy can kick field goals consistently, and kick deep into (or out of) the end zone on kickoffs, why isn't that worth a scholarship?

A good kicker can make major impacts on the outcome of a game, and probably has a direct impact on the outcome of 2-3 games/yr. Why is that not worth a scholly?

Everyone realizes the importance of scholarship kickers. It becomes ridiculous when there are up to four on the roster at a time though, just as when there were 7-8 scholarship QBs.

Definitely. But when we have 4 kickers on the scholarship and all of the suck, it's a problem.

My understanding, and could be wrong, is that he only would have to sit out a year if he had been attending a school that had an NCAA recognized football program. Universities in in Mexico do play football but it is looked at the same as a club program and thus doesn't require the year sitting out.

This would be similar to if a kid spent his first year at CU Boulder then decided to play Hockey at DU. Since CU doesn't have an NCAA hockey program he could play right away.

Darragh and Oliver don't suck. Darragh is a top Pac-12 punter and Oliver is at least serviceable. If he gets his lift up he will be above average. He has proven he can kick 50+ if given the chance (he kicked 60 in practice). Embree handicapped him. Embree didn't like kicking FG's at all... probably because FG's do nothing when we're down by 30.

I wouldn't take it out on Gonzalez because of our history in Kicker's

Honestly, I didn't know if Embree didn't like kicking FGs, or whether we just never got in anyone's range last year.
