Apparently Tad & CO are pursuing another Texas recruit in David Wacker. He is a 6'9 230 lb. center. Has some solid offers from Nebraska, SMU, Texas Tech as well as Pepperdine, Cal Poly, Texas State, Indiana State, Rice and Western Kentucky. No these aren't offers from UCLA, Texas, Florida or Michigan, but the first three are all big time schools. Once again there is no reason not to trust Tad and his assistants at this point. I also love that he isn't 6'9 and 190/200. Has some solid weight that could benefit in the post. We also need to add height to our '14 class.

Judson High School, so I'm guessing his dad/relative is Mike Wacker, the coach. Mike played at UT in the early 80s. Mike's dad of course is Jim Wacker, the late TCU and Minnesota football coach. So some good sports sense in that family. David's high school was always on the fast and athletic side in hoops which got them a lot of wins in district play but not incredibly far in the playoffs. His AAU is listed as the San Antonio Spurs. I'm sure he and George King crossed paths in high school.

The thing that concerns me is if we're recruiting a kid with borderline 4 size to be a 5. 6'9" isn't all that intimidating when you have to face off against legit 7 footers in high major basketball. I'm sure the kid is a player, and in Tad I trust, but if we're going after a big in this class, I'd prefer that he actually be big. Just sayin.

I'd argue the amount of sheer 7 footers, let alone 7 footers with actual basketball skills, are far more rare in college basketball than the perception. It's not even a case of all the blue bloods having them and everyone else lacking. Glanced at a handful of blueblood rosters: North Carolina doesn't have a single player over 6'10". Neither does UCLA. Neither does Florida. Neither does Michigan. Neither does Michigan State. If this kid is 6'9" and likely around his 17th birthday and thus potentially still growing, it's fine. The fact he has some weight on him is a major positive. A 6'9" 240 with the strength/weight and coordination is preferable to 7'0" 200 in my book. Unless you are the program that gets that rare 5* beast to play for you for a year, chances are you aren't having a 7 footer who is a legitimate scoring and rebounding threat. Jordan Bachynski is the exception to the rule, yet he also will be 25 years old this season.

I also want to add that an athletic 6'9" player is better for the type of defense that Tad runs than a 7 foot stiff. Think how many times we went small ball and had Dre guarding the other teams biggest man. I think that Tad covets athleticism and versatility more than sheer size. Expect to see a lot more Dre's in the future and less Mills.

The average size of centers in the NBA is like 6'10. Being 6'9 is plenty big for a college center.

    Beat me to it.

The last thing that you want to have to do is change something that works because you have a player that can't function in it.

As C'ville states he's 17. Some normal growth and he becomes 6'10" - 6'11. 15 more lbs. and he is 245. That's big enough to compete with almost anyone he will face in the college game.

    JR Stats:

    11.7 pts/game
    2.0 assists
    9.8 rebounds
    2.7 blocks

It looks like he did not play Brennan and George King

He's visiting Nebraska the weekend of August 31st per Robin Washut (Nebraska Rivals writer). Has another visit setup with Western Kentucky. I believe SMU and Texas Tech made up his top 4. Probably someone CU will lose out on as they are likely confident they will land one of Miller or Welsh.

Interesting. I figured he was our fall-back plan but we'd still recruit him very hard

Visiting Nebraska this weekend. Other OV's set up with Boise St and WKU. It kinda looks like we're going all in on Miller and Welsh

I'm 100% okay with that. Honestly I hope ESPN bumps Welsh up to the Top-100 and we land him. If we had him and Collier, you think we would have a Top-25 class?

Do you still want him if he doesn't get the ESPN bump?

Yes. I am just saying from a national attention stand point. It would be nice to have him in the Top-100.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. A sweet 16 run would do a lot more to gain national attention than the class ratings. I think the staff has done enough to be firmly on the radar of west coast recruits, which is really what matters.

It'd be nice, but needs to be the right fit as well. Would imagine De'ron Davis is our best chance of 5 star talent in the near future. Overall, don't think we need 5 star talent to take the program to the next level. If we can consistently bring in 4 star players, and some of the top 3 star kids, can continue the momentum the program is on.

I agree, the national attention though would be great (on top of what we already get)

Judging strictly from video, I like Miller better than Welsh. Can't see a ton of difference between Miller and Cliff Alexander.

Kinda surprising. I thought he was a strong lean for Nebraska.
