'16 UT OLB Pookie Maka (Signed to COLORADO)

I love his athleticism and would love to have him. But I wonder about the durability of these light linebackers. Is that the way we are going in order to keep up with the up tempo spread offenses in the pac 12? It just seems like many of them never gain the weight to be durable. Gilliam, Gilbert for example.
He's 17 years old, come on man

I wouldn't worry about size with this guy. 6'3'' 220 is not small, and he looks to have the frame to put on another 20 lbs easily.

I like the looks of Pookie, hope to see him as a Buff.

All the other linebackers in the rivals database that list Colorado are 17 also. He's the only one under 205 pounds. The kid looks great. Just saying it seems like we are recruiting lighter linebackers and I hope they can stand up to the abuse.

Who cares? He's 17. He hasn't been in a college program and has the frame to add more weight. Out of everything to be concerned about, him being 205 is the least of my concerns. Gaining weight is not difficult and he won't be playing as a freshman unless he is a standout.

Legitimate question, but I think he has the frame needed to put on weight. We do need bigger LBs at some point.

This point has been brought up in a more general way referring to the direction Mac and Leavitt appear to be going with their defensive personnel. It's possible that they are looking to go lighter and more athletic all around on defense in an attempt to counter the Spread offenses in the Pac 12. Essentially, CBs to S, Safeties to LB, LBs to DEs, etc. Other programs have used this model with great success.

Then go JUCO, we should be at the point now where undersized guys are only gonna play because of injuries or they are balling out and deserve it.

He has the frame to put on weight and that is what is important here.

If we win with that offer list, I hope all the haters will STFU about recruiting. Great coaches, great new facilities, recruiting on the uptick!

If Pookie was 235 he'd be choosing between USC, Alabama, and Ohio State. No question. Those guys don't project even weight.
Of all the things to project, this is the least risky. He possesses every other tool.

Thanks Obama.

Exactly. I'd be willing to bet he's 225ish by time he steps on campus, which is more than ok for a 18 year old.

I agree. Thankfully we seem less inclined to let height slide in this class.

205 is not a small LB as a jr. in HS.

Lots of HS kids add 10 lbs in their last year of school. If he comes in at 215 he will be as big as a decent number of LBs who get good playing time in the PAC12 already.

From there add another 10 lbs and you have a 225lb LB who can run. Gladly take him.

In today's game LB's are tall, rangy and can run. Almost like a SS 10 years ago. Look at Skov at the furd a few years ago, he was one of the best in the country, look at wisconsin, they have a bunch of LB's in this same category. A LB in today's game has to be able to cover a receiver and also be able to run sideline to sideline - esp. in the Pac.

The weight of a high school recruit doesn't concern me. The strength and conditioning program is designed to make guys bigger and stronger. If he comes in at 200 or so, with a redshirt year, he could be 230 by the time he's ready to play as an RS freshman. If you need visual evidence, here's David Bakhtiari his freshman year. Now all he does is protect Aaron Rodgers' blind side.

Will Pericak in high school.

And after a couple years in the S&C program at CU.

He'll put on weight quick, would be a great get. Our program isn't at a place where we can get 6-3 245 or 6-5 258 lb LB's like bama and stanford as freshman.
