2011 Schedule, Roster & Coaches

Do you guys want to keep this thread in Recruiting or should it be stickied in CU Football?

I say move it to the Football forum.

I like both moves of Evans to TE and Moten to CB. But with the new situation at QB, I think it might be a year to look at bringing in two QBs.

Makes sense moving to Football - we may see some changes as soon as April 10, and it's about the team, not recruiting at that point.

Talent level is ok.... but I am literally convinced Hawk is unable to run a team anywhere except into the ground. Our talent maybe enough to get 7-8 wins given the brutal schedule this year.... but due to Hawk messing things up and failing to play the best talent I would guess we are staring down another the barrel of another 3-4 wins season

is there a single elite player in this entire group? .even so much as a second or third team All American, much less a 1st teamer, or national award candidate?

no, I didnt think so either

and the 4-5 win 2010 season will refelct it..........we have no elite players and we add to that a mediocre coaching staff

Seious,

Nate Solder was 1st team All Big 12 at LT last year.

I would add Jimmy Smith as a "watch" candidate for those teams. Jalil Brown could be a darkhorse.

Herrod might get some love on the DL, but doubtful he would get All-American unless he had a monster-sack season.

Pericak was a freshman all-american on one service. I've heard coaches are actually worried that Toney Clemons could be NFL-bound after this year (he's that good). Then you've got al those younger guys who were highly-recruited but are finally getting a chance to start this year (Polk, Major, etc.). There's definitely talent on this roster.

NFL teams will generally say that the 4 most valuable positions (because they're the hardest to find) are QB, LT, pass rushing DE, lockdown CB. We seem to have the LT and CB covered. But we need consistent QB play and a consistent pass rush from our base defense. We get those 2 things and I believe this team will be surprisingly good this year.

I have been extremely critical when it is called for with decision making and play calling and that still concerns me once the season starts.

However, IMO I agree with you. I could see a "rising tide lifts all ships" type performance this season. There is an accumulation of factors that point to favorable outcomes.

Bigger, taller, faster, more experienced wide receivers mean that the QB can find an open target quicker.

This means one or two more seconds of getting the ball out and avoiding those god-forsaken sacks (especially on THIRD DOWN!).

This means that defenses have to respect that aspect of the offense, thus giving us more opportunity to run the ball effectively.

This creates confidence for the O-line, wash rinse repeat.

On defense, things are looking really good and I've been looking forward to this season with these players and their experience coming together.

QB and Kicker are my only real concerns (and those are BIG concerns). Even if the rest of the team has risen up to give them the best chance at success, they still have to deliver.

Scotty, this sounds very similar to a post that I wrote about five minutes after the nebraska game ended. But since then, through will-power and prayer, I've been able to supress my optimism. I suggest you do the same.

Lately I've seen folks losing the struggle and getting excited about this upcoming season. Look, if you need support or something to get this under control, just PM me. I'll use facts to show you that since 2001, God hates our team. The evidence is overwhelming. Once God is against you, no receiver is gonna open up a running game.

So, get over the optimism. If for some reason the coaching staff gets our student athletes ready to play some ball this season, and it all comes together, NOBODY will be happier than me. But I can't support another emotional letdown like last season's. So I recommend that you stifle that optimism and secretly, and quietly hope for the best.

It's a struggle, I know. Just remember, there are others out there--just like you--fighting to supress their optimism as well. Good luck.

I know, I know. I honestly did NOT get optimistic about last season. I think that I have always been pretty even-keeled about expectations. The problem is, my 6-6 and maybe 7-5 predictions look like "optimism" means that most everyone has lost all hope for the team.

Another factor is that I believe we really have the team talent to actually have expectations of a .500 or better season, therefore anything less is a failure from the coaches and changes HAVE to be made.

It's still early spring and it is hard not to get excited at this time. We'll see what happens in the fall.

I think an honest appraisal of the players on this team would say that we do not have top 20 talent or even top 40 talent. At the same time the talent we have and have had is way better than 3-9 talent.

The most positive thing I have going forward is the belief that when Hawk is finally let go the coach that replaces him is not going to find a bare cupboard. This team has enough talent to be at least competitive and even with the recruiting problems of the past two classes this team has enough young talent not to fall of the table in a year or two.

The problem is not the players, it is the one in charge of getting the most out of the players.

Just read (BG Brooks) that Seth Lobato is going to try out at Safety. If it doesn't work out, he'll move back to offense as a slash type player WR/QB.

Also:

Senior walk on WR Cameron Ham will also get a tryout at Safety this fall.

Zac Blaha, an OLB from Colorado Springs, will be joining the team as a Preferred Walk On.

Greyson Gurnee, a LB/FB from Mater Dei HS in CA, will also be joining the team as a Preferred Walk On.

It would be nice to start pulling kids out of there.

A 6'5 safety, huh? Well, no one else has ever done it successfully, so we might as well try it here.

Great idea, he's tall enough for Cody to see over his line so he can throw fewer picks in practice and give daddy Hawk another reason to use when he starts him instead of Tyler!

Matt Johnson, the sophomore spring walk on QB, will not be with the team this Fall. Like most spring walk ons, he simply didn't make it.

I've removed Markques Simas from the roster and moved Terdema Ussery to Safety.

We've actually got a few openings heading into the season. Probably a good bet that Luke Walters is put on scholarship for his senior year. I won't be surprised if we accept a late addition to the class and maybe even a transfer.

Thanks for the updates.
On Long Snappers you have:

Returning LSs on Scholarship: 0

Walk Ons - Joe Silipo (Sr)
2010 Class (0):

We have LS Ryan Iverson coming as a PWO class of 2010.

(Not for the Roster until we hear for sure, but possibly Steven Barber as a walk on LS, though I haven't hear what he's decided to do yet. Also haven't heard that he ruled out CU, so maybe we have two LS coming this summer/fall.)

Good catch, AJ. Fixed.

And it should be noted that whomever wins the LS job is almost assured of being put on scholarship.

Cleaned it up a lot to move things beyond the recruiting class and just list scholarship classes and walk ons by position.

Also added in Mariki Pugh, a DB transfer from Georgia who will be a sophomore in 2010.

And I added in Jordan Marquez, a freshman S prospect from Arvada who has accepted a preferred walk on invitation.

As of June 8th, we now have 2 open scholarship slots for the 2010 season.

Any updates on the APR hits? When do they take effect?

Any updates on the APR hits? When do they take effect?

APR hits should be 5 for football and 1 for basketball. We proactively took these penalties last year, knowing they were coming.

The 2005-06 academic year was brutal for CU's APR. The 2004-05 was incredibly good and had balanced it the past few years - but that score dropped out this year (APR is a 4-year rolling average). 2008-09 replaced it, and while it was expected to be a good score it wasn't expected to be quite as good as 2004-05 and wouldn't make up for the 2005-06 year. Fortunately, our annual APR scores for football and basketball increase every year after 2005-06 and we won't be looking at any more penalties going into the future.

Bottom line: This is the last bit of our old problems rearing their head in the media, but they've been cleaned up and we've already taken the penalty. It's kind of a non-story.

Sadly, I removed Anthony Wright from the 2010 roster.

I also moved Sophomore Mariki Pugh from Safety to Cornerback, as that's where he's likely to get a shot at starting in 2011.

Just made a few adjustments:

1. Removed Justin Favors. Didn't qualify and will not be a Buff.
2. Added Travon Patterson to the senior class.
3. Added Dakota Poole to the freshman class.

The Buffs still have 3 scholarships available for the 2010 season. I'd expect Luke Walters to be granted 1 of them.
