In a major change from past years, CU is outpacing most of its conference in early commitments. Only USC has more verbals at this point (and we're working at poaching a couple of them).

Importantly, both Cal and Stanford have found their quarterback for this year.

Also important to keep in mind that even the current five commits stick with USC, that leaves them with about 10 open spots (at most).

So Cal recruiting is going to be nuts this year. Many kids are waiting for a USC offer that is not going to come. Really good players too. This is one instance where USC's national recruiting strategy might backfire. We have to take advantage.

I mentioned it in another thread, but I really hope we reach out to Kenny Lawler. He wants to take visits and I think he is about to blow up on the recruiting trail.

Oshay Dunmore to Oregon is an interesting commit. He is an elite decathlete and will compete in both football and track there.

Arizona State made a huge haul on its Junior Day. They've now got verbals from 4 Long Beach Poly prospects.

Also, you may notice that 4 of their 5 commitments are WRs. Pretty typical for the Pac-12. One difference that people will notice is that most of the programs load up on offensive talent in their recruiting classes. That's the focus of the conference. Then, the RBs, WRs, ATHs and even some TEs get moved to the defensive side after first getting a crack at O. Major exception to that strategy is USC.

Recruiting is going to be fun to follow in the Pac-12. I am calling it right now-at least one of the four WRs they have committed will ultimately sign with another school. But ASU will also do well in recruiting if they play up to potential.

ASU's kind of a house of cards, though. They definitely have a lot of talent. But there are major character and academic concerns up and down that roster. Erickson has been given carte blanche to recruit whomever he wants. They're not winning and they're playing with fire as far as the potential for ineligibility issues and criminal charges arising. Erickson managed a similar situation at Miami, so he does know what he's doing. But I can't imagine the mess we'll see if they have another losing season and he gets fired. Not only will their 2012 class fall apart, but that roster could very well implode.

Of course, but that is the MO of any Erickson program. I could see them winning as many as 9-10 games or winning as few as 5, the South is wide open. But that is a job that will draw a decent candidate if they do fire Erickson.

The uncertainty surrounding Erickson and Neuheisel, and to a lesser degree Mike Stoops, is going make recruiting a wild ride this year.

    Kiffin, too.

Best I can tell, he's playing a major game in recruiting. It's a fact that he and Orgeron are willing to commit NCAA violations in order to get players. It's a fact that there are outside influences on the USC program that sometimes get Troy in trouble with the NCAA. But what's going on now is pretty sickening. He over-signed a class in 2011 knowing that he'd have to cut at least 10 guys loose from their scholarships after the NCAA ruled against USC's appeal. His plan all along was to hoard players, conduct tryouts, cut his 10 or so worst guys, and not care a lick whether it screwed up the college careers of those kids. I don't think he's on the hot seat this year, but he will be at the end of the season if they have another 7 or 8 win season.

Definitely cannot forget about the whole Kiffin/reduced scholarships situation. There are prospects all over southern California that are going to be up for grabs. Not just good players either, I'm talking elite players.

Utah is on the board with their first commit, Kiha Sai out of Honolulu. The Utes are going to be a factor in Hawaii recruiting, as is the case with many Pac-12 schools. They have a strong Poly contingent on their roster and some assistants too. Should make for some wild recruiting rides.

Stanford got a huge commitment today from 4* (#30 overall by Rivals) LB Noor Davis out of Florida. That gives them two of the top 30 players in country, having already secured a commitment from Aziz ****tu. They are not going away anytime soon.

Pac-12 recruiting is reminding me a bit of the early days of the Big 12 when the power was in the North as CU, NU and KSU were national powers while Oklahoma and Texas were in transition (and TAMU was typically underperforming its talent).

Right now, Oregon and Stanford are the best they've ever been to an unprecedented historical level and Cal is recruiting better than it ever has. Washington's been down, but has some momentum and is showing signs of life. While in the South, USC is under NCAA sanctions, UCLA is mired in Weasel, and CU just quit playing leapfrog to focus on winning football games again. This will turn within 5 years with the power rating shifting to the South, imo, but the North is better right now.
